Message from Mrs. Gilbert, Principal
Thank you to Chelmsford Police Department for our 3rd Officer High Five Friday. Students enthusiastically greeted our officers at arrival today. This is a monthly event that we do in partnership with our local officers.
We are hoping to continue the tradition of the International Festival this school year. Our first planning meeting will take place on Monday December 6th in person at South Row. If you are interested in finding out more or would like to help in anyway please consider attending. If you are unable to attend but would like more information, please reach out to Mr. Ramalho or myself.
As the cold weather sets in and families are gathering for various holidays we ask families to continue to be cautious with their symptom monitoring. Additionally, if you are notified that your child has been exposed to an individual with Covid-19 please keep them home and contact the nurse. Please see the nurse's corner for more detailed information.
Respectfully,
Terri

Reminders/ Updates for the Week
Therapy Dogs: We are excited to share that we will be having therapy dogs visit South Row school monthly. This is an initiative that our Coordinator of Nursing Services has set up with She's a Keeper (https://www.shesakeeper.dog/) for each building in Chelmsford. The first visit will be on December 14th. We are still working on a schedule and specific details but wanted to provide an OPT out form for families that DO NOT want their child participating/engaging with the therapy dogs. Please only fill out the form if you DO NOT want your child participating.
Should you have additional questions or if you want to communicate an allergy that your child may have to the school please contact Nurse Vandevoordt directly at vandevoordts@chelmsford.k12.ma.us or by phone at 978-251-5177 ext. 2.
We are excited for the therapy dogs to visit South Row as we continue to support our students' social/emotional wellbeing.
Jacket/Sweatshirt Reminder: As we get deeper in the fall and the winter months are fast approaching, we want to remind all families to please monitor the weather to ensure your child is prepared for outdoor recess and snack breaks. We recommend that students bring a sweatshirt and/or jacket to school daily to be sure they are prepared.
Pool Testing/Test and Stay: If you are interested in opting into either of these testing protocols please click on this link to complete the consent form: LINK
4th Grade Student Council Update: Before Thanksgiving break, our 4th Grade Student Council met to sign up for different jobs/projects. Over the next week or so Mr. Ramalho and Mrs. Gilbert will be reviewing the sign up lists and will be reaching out to council members and families with more information. Students signed up for: safety patrol, assisting with kindergarten at car dismissal, reading to K-3 classes (virtual or in person), Kind Act and Spirit Day posters designers, PTO presenters, and Grade Level meeting helpers. We are looking forward to getting our student council leaders involved in our school and community at large. More updates coming soon!
From the Computer Lab!
All students at South Row will participate in the Hour of Code the week of December 6. What is the Hour of Code? It’s an opportunity for every child to learn how the technology around us works. The Hour of Code is a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. We are fortunate in the Chelmsford Public schools that technology classes are offered at all grade levels K-12 but only 51% of all high schools teach computer science. Young women and students from marginalized racial and ethnic groups are severely underrepresented in computer science classes, and in the tech industry. Good news is, we’re on our way to change this. More good news is the kids have a great time learning. For more information visit Hour of Code

Counselors Corner
Hello parents and caregivers,
Given all of the changes that children have experienced the last couple of years...parents often have questions on how best to respond to their child's worries.
I hope that you find this article helpful.
Dr. Linda Rich-South Row Counselor
Nurses Corner
Dear South Row Families,
THANK YOU
I would like to sincerely thank the South Row community for adhering to the school’s covid safety regulations. Because students and staff stayed home when they felt ill or had a known Covid exposure over the break, the school was only mildly affected by the post Thanksgiving spike in cases. All of the pools for pool testing on Wednesday 12/1 were negative thanks to you! Keep up the great work!
Therapy Dogs
Please be sure to read the above messaging regarding our plans to have therapy dogs in the building. If you have health concerns about your student and the dogs, please reach out to me via email or phone. Email - vandevoordts@chelmsford.k12.ma.us Phone - 978-251-5177 option 2.
Vaccination:
I have been receiving some questions regarding vaccination and how it affects test and stay and pooled testing. If your student has received the Covid vaccine or is fully vaccinated, they are welcome to continue to participate in weekly pooled testing. Once they are fully vaccinated they will be exempt from testing and quarantine protocols. This means that if your fully vaccinated student is identified as a close contact inside or outside of school they will NOT be required to quarantine or test (including test and stay) in order to stay in school. If your student becomes symptomatic during the 14 days after exposure, they should stay home from school and seek an outside PCR or Molecular Covid test.
As far as documentation is concerned, you can send it after the first dose or wait until the series is complete.
Please feel free to reach out to me with questions or concerns.
Warmly,
Nurse V.

Holiday Decorations Map
We have gotten feedback that some kids really missed the Fall Decorations Hunt that we did last year as a Covid-friendly community activity, so we are bringing it back for this holiday season!
If you plan to do any decorating for any sort of year-end holidays, sign up here to be included in the map we will be publishing for anyone who would like to drive around or walk around and enjoy the decorations that people have up. The map will be published in the December 10 Homelink, so sign up by December 9. No names will be published on the map, it will simply be a map with pins marking decorated houses. Families and staff are all welcome to participate. The more, the merrier!
Staff Appreciation Cookie "Swap"
This time of year, the PTO does a cookie swap for the staff where we ask parents to bake items and we lay out a lovely spread in the teachers lounge for the staff to help themselves to throughout the day. We are asking that parents sign up to bake cookies, brownies, or some other treat, and drop them at school during school hours or in the bin at 171 Mill Road after hours. Items can be dropped off on either December 15th or 16th, and we will have the treats out for the staff on the 17th.
Please sign up to bring treats at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C044CA4AA22ABFC1-2021
Recess Equipment
One of the things the PTO raises funds for is recess equipment for the school. Balls pop and get lost, chalk gets used up, and indoor recess games lose parts in the normal course of play, so we replenish some of the equipment each year. This year, the recess aides needed a new equipment cart (the old one was missing a wheel!), which took a big piece of our recess budget, so we have collected a wish list from the recess aides and teachers for both outdoor and indoor recess, and put together an Amazon wishlist in case anyone would like to donate a toy or game.
Please see the list at https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/AV0B5P1ZACH7?ref_=wl_share if you would like to help out with recess equipment and games. Thanks in advance for your support!
Bookmark Kits for Classrooms
With the close-packed nature of shopping at our traditional Holiday Shop and the number of parent volunteers it requires coming into the school, this was not the year to resume the shop as we had hoped it would be. However, we wanted to keep a piece of that alive for the students, and have provided kits to each classroom so that the kids can make a thumbprint art bookmark to bring home either as a gift for someone or to use in their own reading. Watch for the bookmarks in the next couple of weeks!
Shipping Notice Error
We know that some of you received shipping notice emails in the last couple of days for old spirit wear orders. There was an update to the back end of our e-commerce site and in the course of that, all old orders were marked shipped which auto-generated an email. You are not getting a duplicate of your old order, and no credit card data gets stored so you are not being charged again. Kindly disregard the emails.
