Ms. Angie’s Five Simple Rules for Healthy Kids
No Screens until Age 2 (except for Face-timing loved ones)
https://www.apa.org/pi/families/resources/newsletter/2019/05/media-use-childhood
This advice comes from the American Pediatrics Association.
No Social Media until Age 16
https://www.popsugar.com/family/what-parents-can-learn-from-social-dilemma-47791749
If you haven’t seen it, consider watching the Netflix docudrama “The Social Dilemma” to hear the thoughts of current and former Silicon Valley executives on apps like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and TikTok and the effects they can have on teens.
Consistent Wake-Up Time
https://multibriefs.com/briefs/cts/sleepprinciples2.pdf
This advice comes from the UCSF Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine and Sleep Disorders and CTS Pediatrics Committee. Sleep is crucial to brain development, and although there are a lot of aspects to good sleep hygiene, if you have to pick one—make sure your kids get up at the same time every day. If you ensure they don’t have electronic devices in their bedrooms at night, a decent bedtime will soon follow.
Varied Diet with Fruits & Veggies
https://health.usnews.com/wellness/for-parents/articles/gut-health-for-kids
Have you paid attention to recent research on how important our gut microbiome is to our health? Hint: fiber! Experts recommend VARIETY in children’s diets and research shows that expanding your child’s palate only happens through trying new foods, again and again and again.
No Shame
Mild shame, coupled with loving support, can help children learn to conform to social norms. But shame becomes toxic when it causes children to feel that they are somehow defective—not good enough. Ditch the shame and practice empathetic limits instead!

DID YOU KNOW?
"It Takes a Village" Mural Fundraiser
The Covid-19 pandemic presents many challenges including cancelling our annual Jog-A-Thon fundraiser. We are happy to announce that we will have an alternative fundraiser themed, “It Takes a Village”. Coretta Scott King said, "The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members".
With your help, we will create," It Takes a Village" mural (12 x 15 ft) from tiles decorated by families. We hope that this fundraiser will be a fun opportunity for your family to support the school AND create a beautiful art piece highlighting MWMA's compassionate village.
Mural Mock-Up and Stenciled Tile Examples (Above): Each tile will be pre-stenciled with the outline of a house. Families will decorate the house using an art supply kit that will be sent home with each tile.
FUNDRAISER PURPOSE:
1. Promoting emotional health and suicide prevention via our MWMA Hope Squad led by Ms. Marianne, school counselor.
2. Enrich arts education at MWMA supporting emotional health and wellbeing, led by Ms. Hilary, art teacher.
HOW TO PARTICIPATE:
- Each family may purchase and decorate ONE stenciled FAMILY tile. All family tiles will be combined to create a unique, “It Takes a Village” mural. The mural will be hung in the front vestibule (west wall) and will be approximately 12 x 15 ft.
- Tiles will be decorated with an art supply kit that will be sent home with each tile.
- Don’t want to decorate a tile? Donate and sponsor a tile that will be completed by MWMA students.
- OR simply make a donation without purchasing a tile.
FAMILY TILE SIZES AND DONATIONS: Tiles will be pre-stenciled with the outline of a house. The pre-stenciled tiles will be decorated by each family (art supply kit will be sent home with the tile).
- 5” tile: $25.00 including art supply kit
- 7” tile: $50.00 including art supply kit

SCHOOL COUNSELOR'S CORNER
Ms. Marianne Noble
HOPE SQUAD
I am so excited to announce that this month we will form a HOPE (Hold On, Persuade, Empower) Squad. The HOPE Squad is comprised of students, grades 4th - 9th, chosen by their peers because they are great listeners. Squad students are kind, stand-up against bullying, and may possibly refer peers, who may be struggling with depression or suicidal thoughts, to the counseling office. Students are not expected to counsel peers, but to be supportive and when appropriate, refer their peers to a trusted adult.
HOPE Squad students will actively be engaged in making our school a more positive environment for all students. They will participate in service projects and fundraisers, learn about mental health, and learn to recognize the signs of a student that may be struggling. It is our hope that students rise to the occasion and become leaders in their grades and in our school.
If your student comes home with a permission slip to be a part of our school's HOPE Squad, please read through it carefully and together decide if this is something your student would like to be involved with. We are excited for this program and the good that the students can do for one another.

STAFF HIGHLIGHTS
Ms. Cyndi, MS Math Teacher
Cyndi Goehring is thrilled to be teaching math at MWMA. Cyndi's teaching journey began with a degree in Business Management from BYU. After working for two different investment firms, she realized that she loved investing her own money, but hated investing for other people. She returned to BYU for a teaching certificate. Since then, Cyndi has taught multiple grades in 4 states. Once she realized how much she loved the age group, she stayed teaching middle school math. Cyndi enjoys teaching math because it is really about solving problems! Her favorite thing about teaching math is finding just the right way to present a topic so it clicks with the students.
Along with teaching, Cyndi has had the privilege of raising three wonderful kids with her husband. In addition, Cyndi has worked in medical transcription, insurance billing, and career counseling. Her favorite job was working as a cast member at Disneyland! When she is not planning her next Disney vacation, you can find her reading, walking her dog, or Facetiming her amazing granddaughter. Cyndi enjoys learning a little bit about a lot of things – she loves trivia, movies, and podcasts.
Mr. Dustin, MS ScienceTeacher
Mr. Dustin has a BS in Biology from Utah State University, where he spent several years working with students and faculty in the analytical chemistry lab. He has also worked in analytical labs in a commercial environment, as well as in an R&D lab doing experiments with plant nutrients and agricultural crops.
He is an avid lover of all science-y things, and particularly enjoys watching people discover new things and have new and exciting experiences. He has come to Mountain West Montessori Academy for a chance to share a more pure experience of science with his students than he experienced working commercially.
