keystone classroom initiative
On March 8th the elementary school participated in activities focused on the upcoming celebration of the 250th birthday of the United States in 2026. The activities were sponsored by the Keystone Classroom Initiative which focuses on celebrating Pennsylvania’s history and its impact on the United States of America. Students in grades 3 & 4 attended an assembly with Mr. William Penn as the guest speaker. Students in grades Pre-K – 2 had guest readers attend their classrooms to share books focused on Pennsylvania and American history. To find out more about America250PA, please visit their website: https://www.america250pa.org/4-Mission-and-Purpose
Intermediate Band Performance
In celebration of Music in Our Schools Month, the OVES Intermediate Band performed a concert inside the State Capitol Building in Harrisburg on March 15. These performances are sponsored by the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association. School music groups from all over the state travel to Harrisburg to participate in this month-long celebration of music education. The Intermediate Band students also had an opportunity to visit the State Museum of PA before they performed.
STEM Design Challenge
Three elementary teams entered the annual STEM Design Challenge hosted by the Berks County Intermediate Unit on Wednesday, March 22. The challenge this year was to research an environmental problem, then create a solution and build a prototype using only K'Nex pieces. The teams worked for four months completing all of the tasks. There were many ideas brainstormed as the groups decided and collaborated which one they thought was the best. After ideas were chosen and sketches were made of various designs, students started to build using K’Nex pieces. They documented their journey creating an engineering design journal. All teams learned how to use an online 3D modeling program called TinkerCad to create blueprints. At the BCIU they had 2 hours to rebuild the model of their creation and then gave a two minute presentation in front of a panel of judges. The students were judged on the following categories in a rubric: design, creativity, teamwork, engineering design journal, presentation, and blueprints.
As the judges announced the winners, the students from all 44 teams waited in anticipation. The Krazy K’Nex Kreators, consisting of Kevin Conrad, Brenton Kline, and Ivan Romanisko, got third place ribbons! They created a boat that would address the issue of algae blooms hurting the marine ecosystem. Way to go, Oley Elementary!
The other two teams also did a great job with all of the components of the project. The Marvelous Makers, consisting of Ryley Andrews, Sarah Shea, and Emileigh Williams, created the Ocean-Bot - to clean up pollution in the oceans. The K’Nex Kore, consisting of Reuben Glick and Moses Mast, designed the Nature-Bot, which was a system of transportation using solar and wind power to reduce air pollution.
raisin kindness
During the month of February, many classes in our elementary school participated in a County wide kindness program called “Raisin Kindness.” This program was initiated by a third grade student in the Governor Mifflin School District, Colton Brady. Colton was the winner of the Sun-Maid Raisin National Contest in March 2022. He created “Raisin Kindness,’ during the month of February to help combat depression during the winter months. Colton’s original goal was to spread kindness through snacks at his school, and then word got out! There was an
overwhelming request to expand the program into neighboring school districts with many local business sponsors. So, project postcards were shared with all county teachers who chose to participate, and students carried out random acts of kindness to spread joy. Our elementary students took lots of responsibility in completing many random acts of kindness in the following participating classrooms: Mrs. Davis, Mrs. Blatt, Mrs. Sim, Mrs. Swoyer, Mrs. Gardecki, Ms. Harding, Mrs. Bungarz, and Mrs. Dietrich. Overall, students in all participating Berks County schools completed 9,536 acts of kindeness! It is wonderful to see what a small act of kindness can do to brighten somebody’s day! You can read more about Colton’s project at doitlocalberks.com/raisin.

Aevidum Club
The Oley Valley Middle School Avedium Club helps to support students by showing that they are cared about, accepted and appreciated. The word Aevidum has Latin roots and means, “I’ve got your back”. Club members have participated in various activities throughout the school year to show their support for students and the community.
Students organized Red Ribbon Week, Kindness Week, Toys for Tots and a Soup-er Bowl food collection for the Oley Pantry. Additionally, students hand-delivered hearts to every student during the month of February with positive messages written on them. This was followed by Random Acts of Kindness Day activities on February 17th. Aevidum members welcomed students in the morning and encouraged them to pick a sticky note with a special challenge for the day, such as complimenting a peer or helping a friend.
There are several other fun activities planned for the remainder of the school year. Students will be recognizing World Down Syndrome Day on March 21st by wearing funky socks or the Down Syndrome colors of blue and yellow. In April, students will recognize Autism Awareness Month. Additionally, PSSA motivational cards have been created for all students and will be delivered by club members during the testing week.
Thank you to all of the students who have participated in the club this year! Students have done a wonderful job of supporting their peers. We are thankful for such an amazing group of students!
Outstanding STEM Student
Congratulations to Kylie White! Kylie, an 8th grade OVMS student, was chosen as this year's outstanding STEM student. Kylie was honored at an awards breakfast at the Northern Area Chamber of Commerce meeting. Best wishes to Kylie, her future looks very bright.
What's so cool about manufacturing
The "What's So Cool About Manufacturing" awards night was a wonderful experience for the OVMS Video Club. Of the categories of this year's competition, Oley Valley won the "Outstanding Cool" award. Our club was partnered with Unique Snacks, the company that produces delicious pretzel snacks such as "Splits" and "Shells". The Video Club wishes to thank everyone that helped us over the past five months. We can't say thank you enough for voting for us during the final days of the contest. Also, thanks to the OV Community Education Foundation for their continued support of our video projects.
Essay Contest
The Optimist Club of Boyertown recently held an essay contest for the students of the Boyertown and Oley Valley school districts. The topic for this year’s contest, selected by Optimist International, was “Who is an everyday hero who brings out the Optimism in you.”
The winning essay was written by Tetje Williamson from Oley Valley High School and the runner up was written by Bode Brewer. The third place winner was Mahlon Weidner.
Williamson and Brewer read their essays to the club at its Feb. 27 business meeting; both students were presented with medals for their achievement along with a certificate. Mahlon was unable to attend.
“On behalf of the Oley Valley High School AP Language and Composition class, we thank the Boyertown Optimist Club for providing the opportunity to be a part of the essay contest,” said Oley Valley English teacher Lori Berryman. “It was a cathartic experience to brainstorm and write about the optimism that exists in our lives and the people who are positive contributors to that. The students wrote on a wealth of topics from teachers to civil servants to athletes and beyond; it was an honor to see three Oley Valley students take the top spots in the contest. We look forward to participating in this essay contest in the future.”
Williamson’s essay was entered in the Optimist Atlantic Central District Essay contest. At the time of this press release the results from the district event were unknown.
“All three students did a wonderful job writing their essays,” said club Secretary Phil Haddad. “It was great to see students in the Oley Valley School District willing to try something new and for some step out of their comfort zone. Their teacher did a great job preparing her students with their essays. She (Berryman) is a wonderful teacher, who works tirelessly with her students and her optimistic attitude would make her a great optimist member.”
“We look forward to working with the students in the surrounding area next year,” added Haddad.

GRAND NATIONAL DIVISION CHAMPIONSHIP!
Oley Valley FFA Celebrates the 76th National FFA Week
The whole school can show their FFA spirit by participating in various spirit days throughout the week; these consist of Moo Cow Tuesday, Western Wednesday/Hat Day, Thicket (camo) Thursday, and Blue and Gold Friday. A large part of FFA Week is giving back to the teachers, staff, and administration that support the chapter in a large variety of ways. Members signed up to hand out apples and mushrooms on teacher appreciation day! Did you know that Pennsylvania is the leading state in mushroom production and fourth in apple production! A student favorite of FFA Week is Kiss the Goat! During the entirety of the week students brought in non-perishables and put them in a donation bin with the teacher’s name that they wanted to kiss the goat. This year over two-hundred items were collected that were donated to the Oley Valley Food Pantry. This year’s top competitors were Dr. Finnerty, the High School Principal, in fourth place, in third was Mr. Fennely, second was Mr. Snyder, and in first place was Mr. Kriebel. Oley Valley FFA rounded out the week with the Faculty and Staff Appreciation Breakfast, where FFA members served eggs, Christman’s apple sausage, pancakes, and Mrs. Youse’s fastnachts; the FFA chapter had a fantastic end to the week with line dancing at the Oley Valley Community fairgrounds with DJ Chicken Nugget. This year’s National FFA Week was very memorable for Oley Valley FFA, and we look forward to years to come!

Read Across America Day Celebration
Junior Morgan Snyder commented, “Being able to read my favorite children’s book to students at our elementary school was an amazing opportunity and a great way to pass down the joy of reading to younger students.” Cheyenne Endy, also a junior, remarked, “I was nervous at first that the elementary kids wouldn’t like my book selections, but they did, and I had a lot of fun!” Everyone involved really enjoyed the experience and the chance to share passions of reading, effectively communicating, and contributing to the sense of community within the Oley Valley School District.
Public Speaking in the Workplace
Visitors addressed how public speaking is an essential skill in their careers and personal lives. They also provided tips for giving presentations and alleviating anxiety when speaking in front of large groups. The most prolific piece of information from the experts was to prepare and practice before any type of public speaking event. Student Cheyenne Endy enthusiastically remarked, “A lot of good advice was given, and I got to learn much more about my classmates and their families. This was an awesome experience!”
Props for Spanish Class
One of the most sought- after skills in language learning is the ability to converse. Students in all four levels of Spanish, practice these skills in varying degrees to increase competency, pronunciation and understanding. In the upper levels, students have the vocabulary and the expertise to be able to understand and speak on a variety of topics, like pets, foods, favorite places, vacations, and friends. In level 4 Honors, for example, students have shared how they celebrate the holidays with their families, their most memorable trip or excursion, their favorite things to do in their spare time and whom they most admire, to name a few.
In order to get there, speaking Spanish has to begin long before that. Students need the opportunity and the occasion to speak even in simple, basic sentences beginning in Level 1. The challenge is always to keep it interesting. So about this time of the year, we break out the props. The pink “Zack Morris” style flip phones add some pizzazz to any conversation. And of course, nothing takes away the nervousness of speaking a new language in front of classmates better than hiding behind puppets. When all else fails, we use the little finger puppets.

Student of the Quarter
Molly Rothenberger was recognized as student of the (fourth) quarter by the Northeast Chamber of Commerce. She earned this recognition due to her leadership experience in FBLA.
The Lynx do LOCURA DE MARZO!
March Madness in Spanish class? Yes, that’s correct, only our version of March Madness, LOCURA DE MARZO, is a nationwide contest of Spanish songs. Mrs. Munn’s Spanish classes were just one dot on the map of more than 1500 schools from all 50 states and 20 countries who participated this spring. This bi-annual music tournament is created by Ben Ashby, a Spanish teacher in Michigan, and he graciously creates this opportunity for free. Spanish teachers all over the world collaborate on resources, translations and activities for everyone to share and use as they like with their students. We use a shared google drive and connect through a Facebook group to share what we do and use in our classrooms so we can work together and create fun activities for this competition. Months prior to this contest, teachers and students help to select and vote on all of the songs in the contest. For three weeks, students vote on a website to log their predictions and watch thousands of votes compile to make for heated competitions within all of our classrooms. LOCURA DE MARZO has been a fun, motivating way to engage our students in Spanish culture, through music, artists and various genres of songs. Mrs. Munn’s students also kept a paper copy of their bracket predictions and they tracked points as the contest unfolds. Each class had a winner with the most points on their bracket predictions and each level of Spanish 1 and Spanish 2 had a grand prize winner. Students received customized LOCURA DE MARZO tumblers filled with treats and a gift card all made by and donated by Mrs. Munn.

Mulholland Becomes Published Poet
Jaela Mulholland, an eleventh grader enrolled in creative writing, has a lot to celebrate this spring.
Early in the year, Jaela and other students from around the country entered Scholastic’s Art and Writing Awards, a prestigious competition for student creatives. She sent her poem “Coalescence,” which was selected by judges as an honorable mention! Due to this honor, she was also invited to apply to a poetry mentorship program. But the judges weren’t the only ones impressed by her performance.
Jaela also entered the Library of Poetry’s Student Poetry Contest for 2023, and her work--“Every Light I See”--has been selected for publication in the upcoming anthology! The anthology accepts poetry from students nation-wide, and only a fraction of submissions are selected for publication. Anthologies will be available for purchase upon their release at the end of the year.
Congratulations to Jaela on her first publication of the many soon to come.
