From the Desk of the Superintendent
PLEASE CONSIDER COMPLETING THE PARENT/GUARDIAN SURVEY. The survey is anonymous and provides me direct information. You are able to complete ONE per family.
This week I had the pleasure of completing classroom visits with attention to our English Language Learner program. Dr. Amy Quealy, Director of ELL, and Ms. Dawn-Marie Fernandes, Assistant Director of ELL, provided a schedule and we visited classrooms at OMS, SHS and the Wilkins Elementary School. In numerous classrooms I was able to observe teacher-student interaction and the development of language skills. At the same time I was able to interact with students. Next week I will continue to visit two more schools. In January, I will continue classroom visits by targeting our special education classrooms district wide.
Instructional Learning Walks (ILWs) will also become part of our vernacular. ILWs are grounded on the administration calibrating what we are looking for in each classroom in our schools. Calibrating the observation and evaluation process is one of the critical areas of the process. It is also critical for both continuous improvement and improving student outcomes.
Happy Holidays to those celebrating Hanukkah.

Stoughton's Connection to Army-Navy Football Game
This Saturday, December 9 is the annual Army-Navy football game, and for the first time in the 124-year rivalry, it will be played in Massachusetts at Gillette Stadium. There is also a Stoughton connection to the game this year. Courtney Weiner, a 2017 Stoughton High graduate (and former Gibbons Elementary School and O’Donnell Middle School student), is in her first year at Navy as the Director of On-Campus Recruiting for football.
As the Director of On-Campus Recruiting, Weiner coordinates and facilitates all of the events that high school football recruits attend at the Naval Academy and also helps with recruiting-based communication, including social media strategy and directly communicating with recruits.
“A big part of my job, and arguably the most important part, is building relationships with our future student-athletes and their families so that they feel welcome and a part of the Navy Football family,” Weiner explains.
Weiner graduated college from Elon University in 2021, where she was a recruiting and operations assistant for the football team. She received her Master’s in Sports Management from Columbia University, where she served as the Director of On-Campus Recruiting for the Columbia football program in 2022 and was a recruiting assistant the year before.
“I got into football operations when I was a freshman at Elon University. I started to work in recruiting and operations that fall and I loved it! I always wanted to work in sports, I just thought it was going to be as a reporter or producer. It wasn’t until my junior year I decided I wanted to pursue football ops/recruiting as my career. Mainly it was because I felt like I was able to make an impact on people and the program I cared so much about. It’s also really cool to get to see the guys go from recruits to playing in their first college football game,” Weiner said.
Weiner’s love of football was cultivated right here in Stoughton during her days as a cheerleader from Pop Warner to her senior year at SHS.
“I always say I have never missed a football game for a team I have been a part of, and that started with cheerleading. Cheering also made me understand what it was like to be a student-athlete. Although I didn’t cheer in college, I think being a high school student-athlete taught me how to empathize with the amount of time and effort the players put into the sport. That is really important because, at least at Navy, I am not only dealing with high school recruits, but 164 current Navy football players. You need to be able to relate or empathize in some capacity to really have a relationship with your student-athletes,” Weiner said.
For any SHS students looking to go into recruiting, coaching, or another area in the sports management field, Weiner said “it is all about connections.”
“It is a small industry, so usually people can connect you with other people, and then your network expands. I would also say, make sure you know why you want to be in the sports management field and let that guide you. It is really cool getting to be on the sidelines of big games, but at the end of the day that is only a small snapshot of the industry. A lot more goes into it, so you need to have a “why” that you can lean on when it gets hard,” she said.
Weiner will be at Gillette Stadium this Saturday as she also helps Navy football with travel operations. (She is pictured above in the first photo at Navy’s game against Notre Dame, played in Ireland earlier this season).
“I never thought I would work at a service academy but it really is something special,” she said. “In this job, you really feel like you are a part of something bigger than yourself. I am extremely excited and grateful that I get to be a part of the Army-Navy Game, but it makes it even more special that I get to be a part of it 20 minutes away from where I grew up. Go Navy! Beat Army!”
A Realistic Fiction Feast at the Dawe
Dawe School 4th grade classes hosted a "Realistic Fiction Feast" this week to celebrate the end of their writing workshop unit.
The 4th graders read the stories their classmates had written and then wrote compliments on each of their plates to let them know what they liked about the story, or how they related to it. Dawe staff and District administration also stopped by to read the stories and leave compliments.
At the end of the activity, each student had a plate full of messages with positive feedback and encouragement!
