Superintendent Update: 4/14/23
from USD116 Superintendent Dr. Ivory-Tatum
To view past superintendent updates, please visit District Updates on our website.
Greetings, Urbana Families and Friends,
The end of the year will be here much sooner than we all expect. This week’s wonderful weather has us all thinking about the summer, but many exciting things are happening in USD between now and then. The remaining Superintendent Updates will highlight many upcoming positive events and programs.
Hopefully you have heard the District is opening online registration early this year on April 24th. Our goal for opening registration early is to ensure we get as many incoming kindergarten and elementary students registered by the last day of school. We want to make thoughtful, informed enrollment decisions before August. In order to do that, we need as many families that are returning to the district next year to register by the end of the year. Secondary families are also encouraged to register early!
We are planning several incentives during the month of May to reward all families who register by the last day of school:
Families needing Technical Assistance and in-person support can attend a Tech Help Session on Wednesday, May 10th, 5:30-6:30 p.m. at Urbana Middle School.
Any family that completes the whole registration process will be automatically entered into a weekly drawing for several prizes. Prizes will include laptops, gift cards, and other goodies! Families are only entered into the prize drawings if they are fully registered. The District-wide raffle drawings will be announced every Friday morning during May.
The District will reward the first school that registers 80% of their returning students with a special treat.
The District will reward the first class in each elementary school with 100% of the students from the class fully registered with a popcorn party.
While these incentives are meant to be a fun way to close out the year, our ultimate goal is to get most of our students registered by May 26th. Please help spread the word and get your student registered after April 24th.
The Urbana Mayoral Recognition Committee invites you to join us to celebrate our Urbana High School students' contribution to our community on Wednesday, May 10, 2023, 5-7 p.m. at Urbana High School Gym.
This program is open to any UHS Student who commits to at least 30 hours of volunteer service during the academic year. The program has allowed our students to engage with the community and contribute to different causes while broadening their knowledge and experience. Examples of work from last year are cleaning up around their neighborhood, translating for families, volunteering with local organizations, and registering new voters. This recognition is an excellent opportunity for students to add to their resumes while applying for higher education, scholarships, or jobs.
The Urbana School District #116 Board of Education is accepting applications in anticipation of a vacancy for the Sub-District 4 Board of Education Seat. The interview process will occur in May, after the new Board is seated. The person appointed will serve until April 2025.
At a minimum, applicants for the School Board position must:
Be a United States Citizen
Be at least 18 years of age
Be a resident of Illinois and the District for at least one year immediately
preceding the appointment
Be a registered voter
Not be a child sex offender
Not hold another incompatible public office
Not have a prohibited interest in any contract with the District
Not hold certain types of prohibited State or federal employment
Applicants should show familiarity with the Board's policies regarding the general duties and responsibilities of a School Board and a School Board member, including fiduciary responsibilities, conflict of interest, ethics, and gift ban. The Board's policies are available on the USD #116 website. If you fit the above criteria, you may pick up a statement of Interest form at 211 N. Race St, Urbana, IL 61802. A completed statement of interest, resume, and a letter that includes your reasons for wanting to serve on the Board of Education must accompany your application.
Thanks, everyone, for your continued commitment to Urbana!
Stay safe and be well,
Dr. Ivory-Tatum
