Greetings Tiger Family,
We are in the midst of our school year and testing is looming right around the corner. We are constantly reviewing student data, collaborating with families, and being reflective educators asking “what can we do better to support student learning and performance?" Thank you to everyone who is supporting that mission. This week our 5th graders started MISA Science testing, which will conclude by March 16th. We are looking forward to upcoming field trips for 3rd grade to the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, and celebrating our top classes with Tiger Paw winners in Mrs. Mathews, Mrs. Balogun, Mrs. Valera, and Ms. Barboza’s classes.
Thank you for all the social and emotional support during the last week. The Buckner family truly appreciates it and CMIT South Elementary and Middle were well represented by staff, students, and the community at the services. This month is also National Women’s History Month and CLF is sponsoring an Essay and Poster Contest. Is there a woman in history, famous or not, that tells your story when she tells her own? Research her and share your stories. The deadline for submissions is March 29, 2023. CLF will award three winners each of whom will receive a $50 gift card and be invited to a reception and present their essay or poster.
Remember this weekend to set your clocks one hour ahead on Saturday night for Daylight Savings Time.

Women's History Month
March is Women's History Month in which we commemorate and encourage the study, observance, and celebration of the vital role of women in American history.
We're raising our girls to be perfect, and we're raising our boys to be brave, says Reshma Saujani, the founder of Girls Who Code. Saujani has taken up the charge to socialize young girls to take risks and learn to program — two skills they need to move society forward. To truly innovate, we cannot leave behind half of our population, she says. "I need each of you to tell every young woman you know to be comfortable with imperfection."
Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP)
Families are invited to learn about the Maryland Comprehensive Assessment Program (MCAP), Maryland School Report Card star ratings, and Individual Student Reports during two upcoming webinars. Zoom registration is limited. Both sessions will be live-streamed on the PGCPS YouTube channel and recorded for viewing on-demand following the events.

Saturday Academy
The Chesapeake Lighthouse Foundation is elated to be able to offer your child a unique extended learning opportunity. The goal of Saturday Academy - (MCAP focus) is to provide mathematics and reading enrichment to students toward academic mastery and improved test performance.
Saturday Academy dates - February to April. Students will take the MCAP May 1-8th. Saturday Academy dates are as follows and will be from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

Kindergarten
Thank you to our Kindergarten families who plan on chaperoning our upcoming field trip to the National Museum of Natural History. We appreciate all of your continued support. The last day to submit any funds for the field trip will be Monday 3/13.
CLASSROOM FUN! We are creating Leprechaun Traps to try to catch a leprechaun before it makes a mess in our classrooms. Please contact your scholar’s teacher if you missed the information sent out about the Leprechaun Trap activity. Students can wear any green top with their uniform bottoms on Friday, March 17th.

Reading Updates
In phonics, students will focus on open syllables V/CV. For example:
bacon=ba/con
basic=ba/sic
fever=fe/ver
flavor=fla/vor
The first syllable in each of these words is open because it ends with a vowel. The second syllable is closed because the vowel is locked in by two consonants.

Science Update
Students are learning about Earth's changes that happen quickly (i.e. earthquakes) and slowly (i.e. erosion).
Social Studies
Students have begun Topic 5, which is Making Differences. Students are learning about heroes and influential people who have made a difference in our world.

We are in Women’s History Month, and we are learning about and celebrating many different influential women in history!
We are gearing up for our field trip next week on Friday! Thank you to everyone who submitted field trip money and permission slips on time! Chaperones, if not already done, please make sure background checks, fingerprints, safeschools videos, etc have been updated/completed! Also, you will need to take an at-home covid test 48 hours prior to the field trip. Message your teachers if you have any questions. We are so excited for the trip and we hope everyone is able to come!
Please make sure students have the supplies they need for school each day (pencils, scissors, colors, etc.)! Also, make sure you are sending students to school with proper jackets for the cold weather. If it is above 32 degrees, there is always a chance that we will go outside for recess.

Reading Updates
This upcoming week, students will be continuing on in Unit 2 about interactions with informational text! Students will also be working on their new spelling words about contractions. We are working on comprehension questions and understanding how to look back at the text to find direct evidence. These stories focus on the essential question of how a chain of events affects plants and animals. We will also be reading and writing about different biographies for Women’s History Month throughout the month!

This upcoming week, students will be continuing Topic 4 which is division facts.
Science Update
Students will also be continuing learning about electricity and magnetism this week.
Social Studies Update
We are starting chapter 3 lesson 3 which is about early explorers. We will be working on timelines and understanding the order of events in history. We also will be learning about people for women’s history this month! Great job to everyone who turned in their Black History Month projects on time!
4th Grade
Grade Level Blurb
Thank you to our scholars for the dedication and hard work throughout this week and all of its challenges. We are still pushing our P.A.N.T.S. (Perfect Attendance No Tardies) initiative. Be sure your scholar is in class by 8:05 am daily in order to participate in the P.A.N.T.S Extravaganza. As we continue in Women's Month, scholars will learn about a few phenomenal women in history. We encourage you all to research and discuss other phenomenal women at home. Thank you to all those families who supported our PTO meeting this week, be it in-person or virtually, we appreciate the continued support.
Sections 41 & 42 Update
Reading: This week we began to read the story “Trombone Shorty.” This is an autobiographical story written by jazz great Troy “Trombone Shorty” Andrews. In this story, we will learn how Troy picked up a Trombone one day and became the musician he is today. Students will monitor their inner conversations as we read the story closely. We will also determine the author’s purpose for writing this story and we will also get a chance to watch “Trombone Shorty” play with his bands through videos.
Next week we will continue to read the story “Trombone Shorty.” We will also determine the author’s purpose for writing this story and identify how the illustrations help us to understand the text. Students will have the opportunity to create their own Blues songs. Students spelling words for this story have been posted with this week’s homework in the Reading Canvas. The spelling Quiz will be on Friday, March 18, 2023, and the Trombone Shorty assessment will be on Thursday, March 16, 2023.
Social Studies: This week we continued in Chapter 4 Economy by looking at how individuals and families make economic decisions. Students discussed banking and saving and how this helps people make choices. Students also explored incentives and advertisements. They also had a chance to create their own currencies.
Next week we will continue with Chapter 4. Students will continue to explore how advertisements and incentives help businesses make more of a profit. Also, students will begin to explore women that have made a difference in the world. They will begin to work on an in-class Women's History Project. Homework for this week, students will be given on BrainPop.
Math: This week scholars have built on our skills and begun to model and solve multi-step problems by finding hidden questions and using bar diagrams as well as equations. Next week, we will be assessed on our mastery of Topic 6 and all things, multi-step problems. Please review the resources in Canvas for each lesson on the topic to prepare.
Science: This week scholars have conducted experiments in hopes of understanding how light changes and moves. Next week we will explore waves and the electromagnetic spectrum. In this lesson, scholars will model how light reflection allows objects to be seen. The end of the topic is approaching, which means an assessment is on the way. Stay tuned for details in the near future.
Health: This week concludes Unit 5: It’s My Body which focuses on self-care/hygiene, social and emotional wellness, reporting abuse, and being responsible. Scholars have received a hard copy of this unit’s magazine but I will still place reading sections in each lesson to help with each activity. Next week we will move into Topic 6: Be Cool, Keep Clean. This unit will discuss hormones and body changes, what good hygiene is, illness prevention, and good hygiene and looking good and feeling great. All health activities are assigned at the beginning of the week and are due on Friday. Because of this, retakes and late submissions are no longer accepted and all grades are final.
Sections 43 & 44 Update
Reading: This week in Reading Workshop, we continued reading “Mama’s Window.” We read about a boy named Sugar, who is sent to live with his uncle after his mother passes away. He gets upset because the money his mother had for a new church window is about to be used to buy a brick. Students monitored their inner conversations while reading the story and were also able to identify the elements of the plot. Students showed their mastery with standards RL.4.1 and RL.4.3 which worked on settings, characters, and characters in depth.
New Vocabulary and Spelling words will be posted next week.
Math: This week we worked our way through 4-5: Area Models and Partial Products
On Monday of next week, we will take the 4-5: Quick Check and begin working on 4-6 Using Partial Products to multiply by 2 Digit Numbers and 4-7 Make Sense and Preserve (last subtopic in topic 4). This week students were assigned the Topic 4 Pick a Project activity, the assignment is due no later than Tuesday, March 22 (late projects will not be accepted). Students have been given time in class to work on the assignment and will be given more time to work on their Pick a Project in class over the next 2 weeks.
Topic 4 Review Test is scheduled for Tuesday, March 22. Please begin reviewing Topic 4 with your student, by using previous assignments and activities as well as the review sections in the Math book pg. 158-162.
Science: Last week students were put in groups and given 2 vocabulary words to research and prepare a self-selected presentation, this week students presented their research to the class. We also began learning about Patterns of Waves( lesson 2), students completed an investigation where they were tasked with creating a wave and then making an observation and analysis about the wave patterns.

Social Studies: This week we started Chapter 4. We talked about needs and wants. Also, about how needs and ants can differ from person to person. Next week we will continue in Chapter 4 Economy by looking at trade markets. Here the students explore different currencies that are used around the world. Students also explored how businesses provide goods and services to meet our wants and needs. We finally identified how businesses try to make a profit and the factors that affect them from making a profit.
5th Grade

We will be taking MISA over the next week. Students receiving accommodations have been pulled and tested according to their specific needs this past week. Please send students to school with a book to read when they are finished testing. Please make sure students are coming to school on time, ready to learn, with all their supplies, and a charged Chromebook. Students who arrive after testing has begun will be sent to a holding area and will have to be pulled from class at a later time to complete make-up testing, so to avoid missing any future instruction, please arrive on time.
Classroom supplies are running low. Students who bring in tissues, pencils, wipes, etc. will be rewarded with roar bucks.
Reading Update
This week, we will be working on our hallway displays for women’s history month and beginning a prewrite for our Women’s History Month essays. We will continue working on some informational texts in order to support students with MISA testing for the next week. Our focus question for the week is, “How does art reflect people’s experiences?” Our vocabulary words for the week are radically, embodies, indivisible, revolutionary, and ironic. Our text for the week is Life & Art from The Wright 3 by Blue Balliett. Students will also be focusing on words with syllable patterns for spelling. Syllable patterns can divide words between two vowels, between two consonants, or between a consonant and a vowel. Understanding syllable patterns can help you spell words with multiple syllables.

In social studies this month, we will be talking about various important women as part of Women’s History Month. Some of the figures we will be learning about include, but are not limited to Michelle Obama, Maya Angelou, Susan B. Anthony, Dr. Mae Jemison, Frida Kahlo, Harper Lee, Florence Nightingale, Mother Teresa, Margaret Thatcher, Sandra Day O’Connor, Malala Yousafzai, Serena Williams, and Condaleezza Rice. Students will be working on cross-curricular assignments in RELA to strengthen their research skills and work on comprehension of informational texts.
Health Updates
This week in health, we are focused on personal hygiene and why it is important to live a healthy and successful life. We will be talking about what good personal hygiene looks like and how we can set routines to help maintain our health through disciplined hygienic practices.
An Update from Lego
Kindergarten, 1st Grade, and 2nd grade:
Students will learn about Jemison's ground-breaking journey as the first Black woman to go to space. They will discover SEL traits that led to her many accomplishments, such as curiosity and determination.
Students will build a rocket ship out of Legos.
3rd Grade:
Students define a variable as a programming term and discuss how and why we use variables in programming. They will complete challenges.
4th Grade & 5th Grade:
Students will learn about how people with hand-related disabilities grab small objects.
In this project, students will:
-explore how prosthetic designs help people with disabilities.
-create and program a prosthetic hand to move objects around
