SHS Goes Red for Heart Health
In honor of American Heart Month, SHS faculty and staff wore red on Thursday, February 8.
Congrats to Emma Hattemer!
Sophomore Emma Hattemer and “High Life” (Otis) competed at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington, Ohio, over two weekends in January. They were Champions in the three foot division one week and Reserve Champions the other week. The team was also awarded first in the Taylor Harris Medal and third in the $500 Classic where she also competed against adult riders.

Spring Sports Tryouts
A current VHSL physical dated after May 1, 2023, is required to try out for any Spring Sport - NO EXCEPTIONS. You must provide your own transportation to and from tryouts.
Softball Tryouts
JV and Varsity girls softball tryouts will take place Tuesday, February 20th through Thursday, February 22nd at the SHS Varsity softball field from 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM located behind the middle school. All girls trying out must have a current VHSL physical on file with the athletic director in order to participate.
Students attending tryouts should have transportation to pick them up no later than 5:10 PM. Softball tryouts are closed to observers.

Senior Trip Payment Deadline
This is a friendly reminder that all payments for the senior trip are due Friday, February 9th. Cash or check will be accepted. Make checks payable to Smithfield High School.
Please submit payments only to Mrs. Mayes in Room 25. Do not submit payments to the office.
If you have question, concerns or want to check your senior trip balance, please email Mrs. Mayes at tmayes@iwcs.k12.va.us.
Smithfield High School Chess Club
Now meets every Monday *AND* Thursday after school from 3 pm to 4 pm in the library.
Students must have a ride home.

Transition to Adulthood Series
In collaboration with PEATC (Parent Educational Advocacy Training Center), the Special Education Department is hosting a Transition to Adulthood series for families of students with disabilities. The first three sessions will consist of training regarding what it means to turn 18 as a student with a disability in Virginia, social security and Medicaid waivers, and financial decisions. Finally, there will be a Transition to Adulthood Fair where families can circulate through various vendor tables. Vendors include the Department of Aging and Rehabilitative Services (DARS), Postsecondary Education Rehabilitation Transition (PERT), PEATC, and the Department of Social Services (DSS).
