VOL 5 ISSUE 35
PRINCIPAL CORNER
MAY
Happy Friday Families,
Thank you to our PVO and everyone who donated their time and resources to ensure the success of teacher appreciation week. This year, educators have exerted significant effort to advance students academically and foster a culture of excellence and respect.
On this Mother's Day, OSES wants to express gratitude to all the women in our lives—whether they be mothers, grandmothers, aunts, or any other relation—who have nurtured and supported our children and young adults. Mother's Day may be observed in a variety of ways, but the underlying purpose of honoring that particular woman in our lives is universal.
On Wednesday, May 24th, we will be hosting our first Parent Town Hall Inspired meeting. We will be using this type of platform to gain insight from the community regarding continuous improvement for our system. Please see flyer below to sign up.
Enjoy your weekend,
Mrs. Greene

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten has had a busy week with 2 fast tests, mothers day gardening, and finishing up our math and reading units. We have learned several ways to identify shapes and continued to grow our reading fluency skills. We are learning all about plants and animals in science class as well. The students are so excited for field day next week and we are counting down the last days of school! Thank you for all the appreciation this week as well! We felt very loved.
FIRST
First grade classes have been busy with FAST Tests and finishing some 4th Quarter Lessons. As part of our lesson in Science about Heredity and Reproduction, we have grown plants in the cup, recorded and measured its growth in our Plant Journal.
PS- Shout out to our ever-supportive PVO and School Administrators in all three OSS campuses for providing us Free Lunch and Early Leave for this whole week! We feel loved and much appreciated. Thank you so much!
SECOND
We have a very special addition to our second grade team this week! One of the ducklings in Ms. Nickerson’s class has hatched. The teachers have collectively named him Clyde! The students have been very excited and eager to come visit him during the day! Students worked very hard on their STAR Testing this week. Everyone has worked so hard this school year, the end is approaching quickly so keep working hard!
THIRD
Astacio’s Class: In Science we are learning about the Sun, stars, and gravity. The students will conduct research to discover what a star is, how stars are formed, and how stars are compared to one another. The students will also learn about the forces of gravity and the role it plays on earth and in space. During reading the students are completing a sequencing reading project, “A Stupendous Sequence Reading Project.” The students will go through the steps in planning a party while they practice identifying sequences in a text. In math we are continuing to practice math skills by playing math board games. These 2-4 player games allow the students to practice concepts like multiplication, division, area, fractions, time, etc.
FOURTH
Mr. Mateer’s Class: FAST sure went by fast! Across the grade, we’re sure everyone tried their best. Please be on the lookout for scores being made available soon. In the meantime, make sure to talk to your child about what we’ve been up to since testing. We’re taking time to learn about good, effective online research and completing a project where we become experts on a topic we’re passionate about. Some notable examples include thalassaphobia, the history of pizza, the Bermuda triangle, skittles, the history of the whopper, and more! By the end of the project, the students will be experts on their chosen topic, so be sure to ask them questions about it. That’s not all! We’re also creating a physical craft to represent Florida history, a poster to review text structures, and we’re finishing up math with a unit on…unit conversions!
P.S. Thank you to everyone who participated in teacher appreciation week. It was truly an excellent week for everyone.
FIFTH
In fifth grade, students completed their Statewide Science Assessment, Placement test for the upcoming year and wrapped up any unfinished assignments. Our fifth graders have been working hard this week, so we unwind with a few fun review activities. As we approach the end of the school year, please remind students to be on their best behavior. The fifth-grade students are excited about our end-of-the-year field trip, 5th-grade dance, and field day. Thank you for all the support and appreciation you have shown us this week.
SIXTH
The sixth graders have entered the final stretch of the school year. In Mr. Lawrence’s classes, we have been working on one of our final units: Meso and South America. Students have been exploring the Maya, Aztec, and Inca civilizations and their cultures.
In Ms. Bravo’s class students are working on Puppet shows! They are doing an amazing job!!! They will present this week. Pictures will be posted in Next week’s newsletter!
I am planning an Educational trip to Spain (Barcelona/Madrid) - June 20th, 2024. An email was sent to all 6th grade families. An informational Zoom meeting took place on Thursday May 11th, 2023 @ 6:00pm. If you are interested in going and your student is not a 6th grader, please send me an email. I have recorded the meeting, so if you are interested and did not get to attend, let me know and I’ll send you the recording!
SPECIALS
Mr. Senter’s class is playing Capture the Chicken with K-2. The game is very similar to Capture the Flag, in the sense that students must devise a plan to get past the opposing team to “Capture the Chicken.” Students were permitted to pass the chicken to teammates to make it back to their side, enter a home base area, throw the chicken to their half to win, or devise an overall strategy, in which they can maneuver past their opponent. (Pictured Below) 4 way soccer with 3-5 grade. Students can score on three goals, but must also defend their goal. In this game, no goalies are permitted, it's all about kicking accuracy, teamwork, and muscular endurance. Students show off their soccer skills learned this year by playing this game.
