If I Built a Car
Book of the Month
About the author: Chris Van Dusen
Dr. Seuss and Robert McCloskey were my heroes. I loved the rhythm of Dr. Seuss’ words and I was fascinated by the meticulous detail of Robert McCloskey’s illustrations. I had no idea back then that I’d end up writing and illustrating children’s books when I grew up.
For more than ten years I worked as a freelance illustrator specializing in art for kids. I was doing mostly editorial work and my illustrations appeared in magazines like Nickelodeon, Family Fin and Disney Adventured. My first book was published in 2000. I've been busy writing and illustrating books ever since."
The Challenge: Build a Car of the Future
The challenges of designing cars are endless. From environmental concerns; to teaching cars to drive themselves; to working out how we’ll get around on the surface of Mars; automotive engineering is all about the future.
Automotive engineers work in every area of the industry, from the look and feel of current cars, to the safety and security of new forms of transport. Attempting to make cars as fast as possible while keeping them fuel efficient may seem like an impossible task, but this is the kind of problem automotive engineers deal with every day.
Problem: How can we as automotive engineers, design a car of the future that will not harm our environment and keep all its occupants safe while keeping a design that is appealing?!
Criteria:
Must include a safety feature for all passengers.
Have at least five unique design features with an explanation of why each feature is important.
Explain how will it be powered (solar, wind, biofuel, etc.)
Must provide a front/side/ and back view
Must demonstrate “who” this car is designed for. (Single rider? Family? Younger person? Older person? etc.)
Constraints:
Car design must be drawn on provided blueprint paper (pick up with the challenge; get all components from Ms. Son or Ms. Dee) and must appear on your poster (any size) or digital advertisement.* (See "Hints" below)
Present your ideas in the form of an advertisement (Any size)
Must have all safety features/ design features labeled.
Must be turned in by Friday, March 24th. Designs that are particularly inventive will be featured on KCAN the following week!
