School Board Recognition Month

January is School Board Recognition Month. Patrick Allen, Sue Hekker, Jessica Adamson, Eric Campbell, and Michael Hiland make up the Sherwood School District’s Board of Directors. These parents and community members volunteer countless hours each month guiding the direction and policies of our District, helping to ensure it is a great place for all kids. If you see a Board member this month, please take a moment to thank them for their service.

Lockdown Drills at All Schools (January 27-February 7)

All schools in our District will be participating in lockdown drills January 27-February 7. These drills are an essential part of our emergency preparedness, and help students and staff to practice specific protocols that would occur in an emergency situation. Practice drills such as these are also an opportunity for our administrators and staff to collaborate with the Sherwood Police Department, and to gather feedback on how to improve procedures.

During a lockdown drill, staff and students are secured within their individual classrooms/offices, and there is no movement in the building. No one will be allowed to enter or exit the campus until the drill has been completed.

Student Health Screenings

FREE PLAYSMART HEART SCREENING AT SHERWOOD HIGH SCHOOL

SHS is partnering with Providence Heart and Vascular Institute to offer a free PlaySmart Heart Screening on Thursday, February 20, 2020. The screening will measure your child’s height, weight and blood pressure and will include an EKG/ECG (which records the heart’s electrical activity) that will be reviewed by a Providence Cardiologist. The screening is painless and non-invasive. Results will be sent from Providence directly to you by email or U.S. mail. Your child may be screened during PE class or they may come during a non-core class.

There are two forms (see below) to be completed (in ink, please) in order for your child to receive this free screening. You can download and print them or you can get the forms from the SHS main office or through your child’s PE teacher. Please return the completed forms to the SHS main office or your child’s PE teacher by February 14th. Children age 12-18 are eligible for this Providence program. We will be offering another PlaySmart screening on April 7, 2020.

FREE VISION SCREENING FOR ALL ELEMENTARY STUDENTS
We will be giving a free vision screening to all elementary students during the month of January (see dates by school below). The testing will be done by Lions Club, with the help of parent volunteers, using the SPOT screening devices. The screening is painless and is done from a distance and does not touch your child’s eyes or face.

Results come to us in about a week. Most children pass the exam. Due to the volume of paperwork we will only send home “not passing” results to parents/guardians in student backpack mail. If you want a copy of “passing” results please contact your school. Screening results for all students will go in their school file.
If you do not want your child to have the vision screening (opt-out) please contact your school office.

If you have any questions about the vision screening please call Health Services at 503-825-5485. Financial assistance may be available if you need an eye exam and/or glasses for your child.

Our District Nurses will be giving a free screening for scoliosis/posture (scoliosis is often called “curvature of the spine”) to all fifth grade students during the month of January (see dates by school below). This screening will check for irregularities in posture. This is a painless screening of your student’s spine and is done over their clothing. We will send results home to you by backpack mail and a copy of the results will go in the student file. If you do not want your child to have the scoliosis/posture screening (opt-out) please contact your school office.

If you have any questions about the scoliosis/posture screening please call Health Services at 503-825-5485.

FREE DENTAL SCREENING FOR CHILDREN AGE SEVEN AND YOUNGER

Dear Parent/Guardian: We will have free dental screenings by a local Dentist at our elementary schools for children age seven or younger who have not been to a dentist (please see dates by school below). This is a screening only and no treatment will be given. You may already have turned in a form to your school to say that your child has been to a dentist, or that the screening is against your family’s beliefs -- if so, your child will not be screened. Screening results will be sent to you in backpack mail and also go into the student file.

If you wish to opt-out of the screening, please contact your school office. For more information about the screening call Health Services at 503-825-5485.

Rebranding Update

In November, surveys were distributed throughout the District to gather input on potential school names for the Transformations schools. During the survey window, additional questions and individual feedback beyond the survey questions were shared with District leadership. In response to those questions, the District has compiled a list of Frequently Asked Questions, which can be viewed here.

Following the November surveys, District and school administrators received additional feedback in favor of keeping the name, "Sherwood Middle School." Because that input differs from earlier feedback, it is essential for the District and the Board of Directors to more thoroughly evaluate the perspectives of our stakeholders. In order to make the best decision possible, a follow-up survey on the middle school name is available through noon on Friday, January 10, 2020. To respond to the follow-up survey, please click here.
