A Message from the Administrative Team
Greenwood Students and Families:
School is NOT in session on Monday, February 19 in observance of President’s Day. Enjoy your 3-day weekend!
Our basketball teams begin district tournament play next week – the girls’ team will play Monday, February 19 at 5 pm at Crane. The boys’ team will play Tuesday, February 20 at 7:30 pm at Sparta. Best of luck to both teams, GO JAYS!
Greenwood girls’ swimming team, led by Coach John Mullen, has had an outstanding season this winter and have qualified three (3) girls for state! Sophia Sechler in diving, Norah Frevert in the 100 breaststroke, and Katelyn Schaller in the 100 backstroke. Last night, Sophia Sechler placed 5th in state for diving! Congratulations to her and best of luck to these swimmers!
Good luck to all History Bowl students today in Morrisville! We want to thank our Scholar Bowl coach, Ms. Grace for sponsoring this event with middle school and high school teams.
For many students’ lunchtime is their favorite time during school. As you know, our lunch is catered and served by the staff of Chartwell’s from Missouri State University. Currently, our students have a debt of approximately $3000 owed for lunch charges. Parents, we implore you to check your student’s account and replenish as necessary. We are in danger of losing some “perks” such as cookie day on Thursday if this debt is not rectified.
The second annual Greenwood Showcase will occur on Thursday, March 21. This event will “showcase” student projects, performances, and fine art displays as a way to celebrate the talented students at Greenwood. More information will be forthcoming.
Go Blue Jays!

Greenwood Middle School Team placed 7th in the competition.
Both the Greenwood Blue and Black Team finished in a tie for 7th place.
First Grade Celebrates Isabel Thomas as Student of the Week
Isabel Thomas celebrated her student of the week on Monday by bringing her dad, Dr. Jake Thomas, an ophthalmologist at Mattax Neu Prater Eye Center. Dr. Thomas presented a PowerPoint on eye anatomy and orbit of the eye. Students learned about density in relation to the eye. Many great questions were asked. The first graders created an eyeball using doughnuts and whipped cream to explore density! On Friday, Isabel’s mom, Dr. Giselle Kohler, a nephrologist discussed kidneys and how they work. Isabel and Dr. Kohler shared an experiment using cheesecloth and several small items to show how kidneys work to filter items and to retain the things our bodies need to stay healthy. Students asked great questions and were treated to Oreos. Terrific student of the week celebration!
Congratulations to Gabriel Parada for Participating in 'In The Heights' with SLT
Greenwood Debate - February Success
The students competed at their last two ‘regular’ season competitions of the year at Rockbridge High School in Columbia, MO and at Springfield Catholic.
Tristan Khoshyomn was the tournament champion in Original Oratory at the Columbia Classic! He was also a semi-finalist in International Extemp. Gyan Grewal earned two significant trophies, as 5th place overall in International Extemp and 6th in Informative Speaking. Tristan and Mary Gabriel were the 5th place Champ Policy debate team. Gyan and Ethan Duff placed 6th in Champ Policy debate.
The Springfield-Catholic tournament was definitely a great way to end regular invitational season competition for the Bluejays. Tristan was the tournament champion in Original Oratory for the second competition in a row and he also placed 4th in International Extemp. Tristan and Mary Gabriel finished the Policy Debate competition as the 2nd place overall team. Mary also placed 2nd in Informative Speaking. In fact, Greenwood had 3 of the top 6 Informative Speaking entries in the tournament. In addition to Mary, Laila Ozturk finished 4th and Gyan Grewal was 5th in Informative. Amore Pennella was also a semi-finalist in Informative. Minal Khan earned 6th place in Original Oratory and also finished 4th in Policy Debate, with Laila. Ethan Duff also had his best performance of the year, so far, in US Extemp – finishing in 4th place overall and also as a semi-finalist in Original Oratory. Gyan and Laila were also semi-finalists in International Extemp.
The team will compete in MSHSAA and NSDA District competitions in March. Good Luck Jays!

The spring semester brings into focus a few things for our secondary students that Mrs. Ewing will spotlight in the next few newsletters. These topics include next year’s scheduling, summer enrichment & leadership programs for all grades, and scholarship opportunities for seniors.
NEXT YEAR SCHEDULING: Mrs. Ewing will present next year’s scheduling information to our rising secondary students (current sixth through eleventh graders) beginning February 21. Students will receive directions and information for selecting their courses for the 2024-2025 school year. They will bring home a Selection of Studies form to be reviewed, approved, and signed by parents. These forms will be returned to Mrs. Ewing by March 4. Mrs. Ewing will also offer a zoom presentation for parents to view on Tuesday, February 20, 6:30pm. Launch Meeting - Zoom Watch for 24-25 scheduling updates in future newsletters as we progress in the master scheduling process.

Leadership Springfield - Leadership Springfield is accepting applications from current high school sophomores and juniors for our 2024-2025 Academy Class. This free community leadership program helps students discover how to be more engaged citizens and develop as leaders in a diverse community. During the seven-month program, students participate in leadership development training, learn about the local community, and coordinate three themed 'field trip days’ where students get to see firsthand how leaders work together to structure and influence the community around them with a focus on equity and inclusion. Students will gain project management skills, leadership training, and a newfound appreciation for the work that goes into making our community function. Most of all, the program is designed to inspire, develop, and connect local students to see the impact they can have on the community. Leadership Springfield provides the Academy program at no cost to students, families, or districts. Program days will not count as absences. Participants also have the option of enrolling in a course through SPS Launch to obtain school credit for this program. See more information on the website.
