What a Month
It seems that every day is "National ________ Day", and apparently that is true for months as well. When thinking of what to write for the final newsletter of this school year, it was hard to come up with what applies to people right now, where they're at.
When looking to see what to write I came across this list.
May is national:
- Miniature Garden Month
- Correct Your Posture Month
- Mental Health Awareness Month
- Strawberry Month
- Salsa Month
- Salad Month
- Recommitment Month
- Photography Month
- Get Caught Reading Month
- Hamburger Month
- Blood Pressure Education Month
- Bike Month
- Barbecue Month
- Date your Mate Month
- American Cheese Month
This is just some of the list, but one of them stood out.
National Recommitment Month is about looking back at goals that you have set and listing the ones that worked, reevaluating ones that haven't been met, and seeing what you need to be successful moving forward.
As we wrap up this school year, think back to goals you set at the beginning of the year. Maybe you committed to making connections with your students or having more positive interactions. In the final days of this school year, continue doing all of the great things you do to reach your goals and make this a year your students will remember.
As for the rest of the list, everyone needs something different.
Whether it is a focus on your health, indulging in a favorite food, finding an outlet for relaxation, or connecting with those you love, we hope you find something this month to carry you through.
Enjoy your last month of the year, enjoy your summer, and remember if you need anything we're always here.
Classroom Strategies
Countdown Caution
We know that summer is something most of us are looking forward to, but use caution when posting countdowns and having big displays that show how many more days until the last day of school.
For a large number of students in Conroe ISD, school provides them consistency and structures that might not be present in their lives outside of their time with us.
Students who struggle with food security, positive adult interactions, or a safe place do not find countdowns to the removal of those things comforting. For them, those calendars read "5 more days of breakfast and lunch" or "7 more days that my teacher loves me and talks to me daily." While they might celebrate with their peers, understand that increases in behaviors as we get closer to the end could be coming from an area of insecurity and uncertainty.
