Weekly Update May 13, 2022
Head Cheetah's Message
Dear Families,
Memorial School continues to show our gratitude for those who help keep our school community healthy and safe. Today was Custodial and Cafeteria Staff Appreciation Day, and we all took a moment to say “THANK YOU” to the professionals in our community who work hard every day to keep our school clean, and our tummies full. We are so lucky to have such committed teams. We would be a messy, hungry bunch without you!
Enjoy this beautiful spring weekend!
With appreciation for your partnership,
Joey & Andrea

Music News
Hello Memorial Families! Please find your student’s grade level below to see our April learning expectations!
Preschool Expectations: Students were expected to explore with voices and movements this month. They tried vocal exploration stories and responded to the “magic word” in the story with the correct sound. They also explored movements during “glue dancing”, “freeze dance”, and “Sally Go ‘Round the Sun”.
Kindergarten Expectations: – Kindergarten students were expected to make a “perfect match” with their singing voices when singing hello to the teacher. They were also expected to sing correct words and show correct movements as we began work on the music for our Kindergarten Show. Finally, they explored movement with various singing games like “Charlie Over the Ocean” and dances like “Superheroes Unite”.
First Grade Expectations: This month, students were expected to read patterns made of the notes “sol” and “mi”. They were also introduced to a new note called “la” and are beginning to learn to read and write that note in combination with the other two. First graders participated in a special Cinco de Mayo cross-curricular activity with library and music last week! They read a story, made a craft, and learned a traditional Mexican dance called “Los Machetes”. Students also explored instruments in the percussion family this month. They tried an “instrument detective” activity where they identified the best way to play the instrument (hit, shake, scrape). Mrs. Zimmitti’s class can be seen exploring percussion instruments in photos below.
Second Grade Expectations: This month, students worked on rhythm and composition. Students identified the dotted half note in the classic springtime song “Take Me Out to the Ball Game”. They are now expected to read and write patterns that include the note. Some classes learned a traditional Mexican song for Cinco de Mayo called “El Citrón”, and tried playing the accompanying rock passing game! They also worked in teams to compose and perform original boomwhacker (tuned plastic tubes) songs. Students were expected to use teamwork to achieve their performance goals! You can see pictures from Mr. Gowac’s class performances below!
Third Grade Expectations: Students are working hard to meet expectations in our recorder program! By the end of our unit, students are expected to have earned at least their “green belt” (level 4) in the recorder karate program! Many students have already surpassed this goal, or will meet the goal soon. We have also been learning about instruments in the four families of the orchestra. Students are expected to identify instruments, as well as the family they belong to. Students even participated in the “Instrument Petting Zoo”, where they met high school instrumentalists and got to hold each instrument as they decided whether to play in fourth grade! Photos from this event below.
Please check out the music room website for more information about the music program. Feel free to reach out at any time by emailing smaldonado@easthamptonct.org.

Grade 3 Center School Visit
We are excited to announce that grade 3 students will be visiting Center School on Friday, June 3rd! In order to maximize the time that our students are able to spend there, students will go straight to Center School that day. If your student rides the school bus, they will be getting off the bus at Center School that morning, as opposed to Memorial School. Center School staff members will board the bus upon arrival to greet the students and guide them into the school. If you typically transport your child to school, we ask that you drop your student off in the Center School circle between 8:25-8:40. The grade 3 teachers will meet the students at Center School. Lunch will be provided by the Center School cafeteria staff. Or, if you prefer, you may send a lunch with your child. Once everyone arrives, our students will adhere to the following schedule:
8:45-9:20 Introductions and Teacher Panel Q&A
9:20-9:30 Transition to Classrooms
9:30-10:50 Visit 4 classrooms for 20 minutes in each room
10:50-11:10 Lunch in the Center School Cafeteria
11:15-11:25 Recess
11:30 Board Buses to Return to Memorial School
