Dryden Junior/Senior High School's seniors, concurrently enrolled in Ferris State University's ENGL 150, wrote their own versions. Here they are!
Caitlin Belleville Discusses the Things That Will Be Forever Cherished in Her Life
Caitlin Belleville was born and raised in Michigan. She has lived in Dryden, Michigan her whole life. She started off her education at Washington Elementary School because her babysitter and dance class was located in Washington, Michigan. She moved to Dryden Elementary School in 3rd grade. She is currently a senior at Dryden High School and wishes to further her education at a university. She wishes to go into the business side of the medical field because she believes it’s the best fit for her. She lives with her mother, father, and sister in a small three-bedroom house.
1. Life Itself
When it comes to living or life in general, I hold it very close to my heart. Over the past few years, I’ve seen what it's like to witness a funeral for a loved one close to me. I now know what it’s like to have a loved one fall ill from cancer and die from COVID-19. I know what it’s like to not be able to see family members because they are old and could contract COVID-19. That is why I hold life so carefully and dearly. You never know when it’s the last time you will see someone or do something.
2. Colleen Belleville
Colleen Belleville is my hero. She is my wonderful mother and she is one of the people I love most in the world. My mom knows everything about me. She always knows how to cheer me up when I’m sad. If there was a category of a perfect parent, I would gladly say my mom will be at the very top. She raised me to become a strong independent woman and taught me everything I know today. That is why I will forever cherish her, and I hope I have made her proud.
3. The Knox Family
I have known the Knox family for most of my life going to school in Dryden, Michigan. I went to school with the youngest Knox family member named Riley. Riley is my best friend. Regan is the oldest child of the Knox’s. She was my babysitter for a couple of years. We recently became closely connected. Craig Knox is the perfect example of what a dad should be. Deanna Knox is a mother that I look up to. Justin Knox is a perfect representation of a son parents should be proud of. This family is like a second family to me. I am so comfortable with all of them that I do consider them family. I’ve created many memories with this family, and I hope to create many more. All those reasons are why I will forever cherish this family.
4. Education
Without education, everyone would be ignorant. I believe education gets people farther in life. Education doesn’t just have to be from a school setting. I believe that education from past generations is equally important. Self discovery is another form of education that I think will get people farther in life.
5. Relationships/friendships
I believe being involved in any type of relationship helps you grow as a person. Whether it’s a family or friend relationship, they will still teach you things about yourself. Over the past two years, I have learned and grown more than I thought was possible due to being in close knitted friendships. Relationships and friendships helped me learn, develop, and grow as an individual. However, I was also able to teach these people the same things they taught me.
6. Laughing
This is something that should be cherished by everyone. Laughing is one of my greatest traits that helps me build my personality. The reason why I cherish this is that it helps connect people together. Without laughter, friendships and things, in general, would be boring. Laughing helps keep people in better moods, and positive vibes are really important to me.
7. Saying Goodbye After High School Graduation
I have never been good at any sort of goodbyes. All throughout high school, graduation has been hyped up because students are so ready to leave. I agree with this statement also, but I’ve known these people since elementary school and it will be a big change not seeing them everyday. Everyone of these people are special to me in their own way, that I will forever cherish and remember the memories we all had.
8. Sweatshirt Weather
Sweatshirts are my favorite things to wear. They are so comfortable to be in and some of them have a pocket which is very convenient. Sweatshirt weather reminds me of the cool summer nights with my friends. It also reminds me of the bonfire nights which allows me to create new memories and to talk to friends I haven’t seen in a long time.
9. Lewis Capaldi
Lewis Capaldi got me through a lot of tough times. He’s one of the best alternative songwriters I’ve come across. I played his album on repeat all throughout the quarantine and lockdown last year from COVID-19. Whenever I feel down or even happy, he is my go-to artist. I admire his talent and will continue to listen to him for the rest of my life.
10. The Movie Series Roots
This movie series will forever be my all-time favorite. Roots is about the process African Americans had to go through in slavery in the United States. This movie gave me inspiration and motivation to learn about this horrible topic so I can do my part and try to make the current world a better place. I will pass this movie on to future generations in my family so they can do their part also.
Alyssa's Top Ten Favorite Things
My name is Alyssa Daoud, I am 17 years old and attend Dryden High School. I have lived in Dryden for the past seven years, and I attended Armada area schools prior. I have many weird hobbies and enjoy eating out. I plan to attend Michigan State University in the fall, where I will hopefully earn my degree. After completing my education, I hope to work in the medical field.
1. Large Cats
My most recent obsession has been with large cats. I do not mean the typically fat tabby cat your friend may have, I am talking about the large cats that hunt in the woods. I have learned that cougars, or also known as mountain lions, live in Michigan. I always thought we had no large cats in this state and it is a terrifying thought. These cats will sit up in trees and hunt their prey for miles. They are super fast and they will see you but you will probably not see them. I have a friend who lives in Lapeer county, and his entire family has seen a cougar in their backyard. This friend lives awfully close to me, and I am scared to be outside alone now.
I have been spending a lot of my free time watching videos and reading up on articles about these cats.
2. Hair Care
I have always struggled with taking care of my hair. It is very long and it gets extremely frizzy when I brush it out. I used to just throw it in a bun every single day and ignore it, but recently I’ve been trying to take care of it. My friend told me ways I could help my hair look nice natural and down and I’ve been experimenting. I also started to look up different ways I could treat my hair and take care of it, and it has come a long way. I no longer get told I have a lion’s mane on my head, and that’s a big start.
3. Mod Pizza
There are not many places that sell gluten-free foods, and it makes it very difficult when I want to go get food with my friends. Mod pizza sells a gluten-free pizza that is delicious. It is cooked perfectly and made exactly how you like it. It comes at an affordable price, and the pizza will keep your appetite satisfied for hours. This pizza is very light and does not make me feel disgusting after eating an entire box. It’s a must-buy every time I see one when I am hungry.
4. The Rustic Bluebird
I have recently discovered the new restaurant in Almont called the Rustic Bluebird. It has a very large menu with a variety of things to offer. This is one of the few places that sells amazing gluten-free foods. It is hard to find restaurants that offer a large gluten-free menu, at an affordable price, with the food tasting spectacular. I consider this restaurant the only hidden gem in Almont.
5. Chick-Fil-A
I have never been a fan of Chick-Fil-A’s food. I always thought it was overpriced and overrated. There is a long line at every location I have ever been to and I never understand why. This was until I tried their vanilla shake. This shake was completely magical and mind-blowing. I had never drunk something that made me quite that happy. I have no idea what it is about this shake that is so delicious, but it’s a must-try for everybody.
6. Government Conspiracy Theories
I have been obsessed with watching people’s conspiracy theories about the government. I think a lot of them are extremely crazy, but they also make a lot of sense, so it really makes me think. I like to watch a lot of the same conspiracies and see other people’s versions of it and decipher between what seems real and what doesn’t. I also like to watch the really crazy conspiracies because they make me laugh at how far of a stretch they went to back it up. I know they are all a matter of opinion and theory, but they interest me and are a great way to kill time.
7. Murder Documentaries
Anytime I come home from school my mom is listening to her murder documentary podcast. I always catch myself stopping my homework to listen in, going to make food so I can listen in, and even just sitting with her to listen to it. No matter what I do I cannot stop myself from listening to it. Something about it is so scary, realistic, and attention-grabbing. I have never been one for scary movies because I will not go to bed at night, however, I can’t stop watching murder documentaries and listening to my mom’s podcasts. They scare me deeply, but I would definitely recommend watching them to others. Some of my favorite documentaries are about: Charles Manson, Ted Bundy, Casey Anothony, Jim Jones, and Sarah Smart.
8. Nighttime Drives
Living in Dryden, there are not many things that you can do for fun. One of the things I often do with my friends is driving around at night. We like to drive the backroads listening to music and even tossing a coin for our location. Sometimes, when we get to a turn we will flip a coin, left being heads, right being tails, to make the drive more spontaneous and interesting. This sounds like a waste of gas money but it is definitely an amazing time and I recommend trying it.
9. Weight-Lifting
I used to dread going to the gym, and I typically did it to stay in shape for volleyball. But within the last year, I have found a real enjoyment for it. With all sports ending from covid and the gyms being shut down I realized how much I enjoyed going to the gym. I would sit around my house thinking about how often I would skip the gym because I didn’t feel like going, and how I would do anything to go again. Then when the gyms opened back up I went consistently for
three months. I have made it a part of my routine and I could not imagine my life without the gym.
10. Snowboarding
I have enjoyed snowboarding since I was six or seven years old. This has always been the highlight of my winters. As I got older I spent a lot less time on the slopes and a lot more playing volleyball. I put all of my money into playing club volleyball and spending it on the uniform, which I had no money left to spend on anything else. With my last season of volleyball being in November, I was able to put more time and money into snowboarding. I bought a brand new board along with step-on bindings, and I am obsessed. I have spent more hours on the slopes than I have in years and my board makes the sport a lot more fun. With the new bindings, I have a lot more control over my turns and stops, along with this board being significantly faster than my previous board, making the trip down exhilarating. The adrenaline rush I get when I y down the hill is unimaginable, and there is nothing in the world that can compare.
Not Without Coffee and Ice Cream
My name is Natalie Embree. I have lived my whole life in the small town of Dryden. I am currently a senior at Dryden Jr/Sr High School. I've attended Dryden schools since I was three years old. This fall I plan to attend college to get a degree and pursue a career in the medical field. There are numerous things I could live without but I have no desire to. I have narrowed down my top ten things.
1. Friends
The one thing I absolutely can not go without is these few specific human beings. My life in their absence would be dull and boring. Time with them consists of nonstop laughter, good memories, and an enjoyable time. I don't know where I would be without these people, they are my “go to’ people that I always depend on. Combined, they have all had such a positive impact on me, in which they have ultimately shaped me into the person I am.
2. Iced Coffee
About a month into lockdown quarantine in the spring of 2020 set in motion my addiction to coffee. Before this I had no desire towards coffee, the burnt bitter taste was something I had despised. I could never understand why so many people consume coffee. Not just the taste, but the fact that it was hot. Drinking warm/hot beverages to me is unappealing. Then, my mom started buying cold brew coffee and I was intrigued by what the difference was. I was shocked by the lack of burnt taste to cold brew, that's when it all began. It compelled me to buy an iced coffee and from there I made a habit of getting them. I don't like sugary drinks or carbonation which basically leaves me with drinking only water so to find something else I like the drink was great. At least that's what I thought in the beginning, but now it just eats up all my money. Something about the mixture of the sweetness to the creamer and the bitterness of the coffee makes a combination I can't seem to let it go of.
3. My Dog
That furry little guy without fail puts a smile on my face everyday. With having a dog around growing up he's a normal part of my life, would be very weird without him around. Majority of the time I am at home and he is always there with me. Especially when others aren't home he compensates for the silence. It would make sense that him barking at random things in the yard, whining because he wants attention, or begging for food would be irritating, but it really isn't. He's company by just sitting next to me when I am doing homework or watching tv. I enjoy taking him on walks and for card rides because he absolutely loves it. Seeing his ears perk up and his tail wag like crazy gives me that warm feeling.
4. Ice Cream
This may just be a dessert, but it's a little more than that for me. As far back as I can remember, I’ve had an immense craving for ice cream. There has never been a time when I was not in the mood for it. My fixation with ice cream started when I was a little kid, when I would be out with my mom she would ask if I was hungry and then what I wanted, as my dad would just ask me if I wanted ice cream. I guess his thinking was what kid doesn't like ice cream. No matter how many times I ate ice cream it always tasted amazing. It wasn't long until every time I went with him somewhere I would get ice cream. Whether it was a Home Depot trip, a family excursion, or we were going for a bike ride, I waited patiently for the car ride home for when he would ask me if I wanted ice cream. For a while it became a part of my daily life, I would eat bowls of ice cream each day. I still go often to Dairy Queen, Charlie Brown's, or some other ice cream place with my friends and it takes me back to when I was younger.
5. Wendy's 4 for 4
Your choice of a sandwich (in my opinion the crispy chicken sandwich is superior), some nuggets, fries, and a drink only for four dollars, 100% worth it. It gets even better, substitute that drink for a frosty. Dipping fries and nuggets into the chocolate frosty is the ultimate combination. I am not big on fast food, I find most of the food to be gross and Wendys is the one fast food restaurant that has pretty good food. I won't eat chicken nuggets from anywhere but there. Their chicken sandwich is just as delicious.
6. Sports
During the school year, my life revolves around sports and I like it that way. Whether I am in the field or on the court it brings me happiness. It takes my mind off of whatever is going on, if I have a lot of homework or something else that could be stressing me out. The best part is the people I am with. My team doesn't fail to make me laugh and keep me eager for the next practice or game. I have been with them for a while now and we've all grown close. Years from now when I think back on high school, I know I will remember these times and how much I enjoyed every moment.
7. Flannels
No matter the event or situation my go-to is always a flannel. I absolutely love wearing them, they are a necessity for my closet. When I walk into a store I head straight for the flannels, it takes a lot of resistance to not buy one every time. It could be 7 degrees out or 60, it's flannel weather. In the winter, put it over a long sleeve or hoodie and in the cooler weather with a T-shirt. They go with really anything: a pair of Nikes, some boots, leggings, Converse, jeans, etc.
8. Driving Around
Not sure if this is a thing only kids around where I live do, but blasting music for hours while driving on the back roads with friends is my version of a good time. Especially with Covid-19, there is not much to do so my friends and I turn to this. For whatever reason being in the car triggers funny moments and good ideas. When you are driving without a specific destination you end up places you’ve never been too. It's a car ride fueled by laughter, good conversations, and memories.
9. Country Music
When doing anything but homework I like to have music on. I listen to mostly all genres but country is dominant. When I drive I listen to country, it would be a different story with another type of music. Most of my friends listen heavily to country as well, so while we are on our drives country is blasting through the speakers. It's the calmness to the song that has me hooked on this type of music. Other songs are very energetic, this accounts for the opposite feeling. So it doesn't matter my mood, country music fits it.
10. Criminal Minds
My go-to show to watch is Criminal Minds. There are twelve seasons so it doesn't get old. Regardless of that, each episode is different which keeps it interesting. I enjoy watching documentaries and other shows centered around crimes and the criminology of them. The psychology behind is a concept that's always intrigued me, and I am fascinated at how they are able to link things together to know who they are looking for.
Reed’s Top Ten Things To Live For
For Reed Hall, hard work and dedication do pay off. Reed is a senior at Dryden High School, who is currently enrolled at Macomb Community College as well. Hard work and dedication has put Reed in a good spot after high school, and he hopes others will choose to do the same. Reed ran four years of varsity cross country and track, and was a state qualifier in cross country twice and track once. In his free time, Reed enjoys watching Hulu, hanging with friends, watching sports, and playing video games. As a senior, Reed wants to share the 10 things he can’t live without.
1. Running
I love running. Yes, for most, running seems to be a punishment, but I guess I can live with being different. Running has been a part of my entire high school career. Running has brought me great success and many great friends. It helps me de-stress after school, and is something I plan on doing for many years to come.
2. The Detroit Tigers
They are MY sports team. Ever since a young age, baseball has always been a true passion of mine. Although I don’t play anymore, sitting back on a warm summer day, watching a Tigers game is like nothing else. Playing at Comerica Park is every little kid's dream, but watching a game in the stands isn’t far from a dream itself. I remember many summer nights at Comerica Park and it really defined my childhood. For that the Detroit Tigers will forever be my favorite sports team.
3. Colorado
Colorado is by far the most breathtaking, stunning state in the U.S. If you’ve never been, I highly recommend going. The sun shines the most there, and the weather year-round is very pleasant. The mountains are insane to the point words can’t even describe them. My family and I have gone out to Colorado almost every summer. We stay in a ski resort town, deep within the mountains, and explore for days. If I could live there for the rest of my life I would be happy forever.
4. Tik Tok
Come on, how can I not include this? I certainly can’t be the only one who doesn’t mindlessly scroll through this app for hours on end. What can I say, it’s addicting. It’s my go-to when I’m bored or when I need a good laugh. Although I will admit, Tik Tok isn’t the best thing I could be doing when boredom strikes, but it’s still a nice fallback option for good entertainment.
5. Hulu
Maybe I will draw criticism here for picking Hulu over Netflix, but I promise you it’s a close race. I am absolutely addicted to One Tree Hill right now, which may just be the reason Hulu is superior. Me watching One Tree Hill is the definition of binge-watching. I find myself watching episode after episode late at night when there is nothing else to do. Besides One Tree Hill, there are many movies I have enjoyed watching. My friend actually got me into my love for Hulu, and I’m very thankful for that. It’s helped me to keep my sanity during these more challenging times.
6. Country Music
Living out here I feel as though it is only right to include country music. There’s nothing like taking the top of a Jeep, driving through the countryside, listening to country music. Country music to me screams summertime. I’m honestly not a huge fan of music in general and I don’t tend to listen to music for fun. But for me, country music is the only exception. Country music just makes me happy. Luke Combs, The Zac Brown Band, and so many more help make the summer special.
7. Culvers
The opening of Culvers in Lapeer was honestly my saving grace. I am proud to put a fast-food restaurant in as a top favorite, so judge away I don’t care. I may or may not eat there at least once a week, that information will stay confidential. I’m absolutely in love with their chicken sandwich and frozen custard. Every Friday I stop there on my way home from work. It basically is my reward for a good week. I may end up broke from this, but Culvers is too irresistible.
8. Xbox
I’m definitely addicted to Xbox. Playing Xbox is one of my favorite hobbies and by far and away one of my favorite things to do when I’m looking to pass the time. I like to play Xbox casually, I’m not in it so much to be competitive, as I like to enjoy my games. I play sports-oriented games like Madden, NBA 2k, MLB The Show, and many more. Playing Xbox allows me to socialize with some of my friends, and Xbox is a huge part of how I was able to stay busy during quarantine last Spring.
9. Chicken Strips
Please don’t forget my BBQ sauce! My favorite food has to be chicken strips. Welcome to my life as a picky eater. I don’t like much, but when I do find something I enjoy I tend to eat a lot of it! I’m going to be honest, I’m not sure of when the last time I went to a restaurant and didn’t order chicken strips was. Chicken strips just hit differently, and I could eat them for many days in a row. I will forever love the simplicity of ordering chicken strips.
10. Harry Potter
If you haven’t seen or read Harry Potter you haven’t lived yet. If you dislike Harry Potter, I’m afraid we can’t be friends. The imagination and creativity that Harry Potter represents is like none other. I read all of the books back in 5th grade, watched the movies shortly after, and now Harry Potter will forever be my favorite series. This was my first big series of books I ever read and it felt like I was living in this other universe with the book characters. Call me nerdy, I get it, but I absolutely love Harry Potter.
Ella Kage Survives Quarantine With The Ten Things She Loves Most
Ella Kage is a Senior at Dryden High School. She is very excited to graduate high school and attend college to go on new adventures and meet lots of people. As of right now, her plans are to go to school at Grand Valley State University and pursue a degree in psychology to study mental health or gender studies. Ella’s main goal for her future is to be genuinely happy in whatever path she chooses to take.
For Ella, the past year has definitely been a struggle, but thanks to family, food, movies, working out, and other important things in her life, life was made easier through her quarantined days…the many, many days it lasted. Down below is a list of the ten things that Ella describes she would not have been able to live without.
1. Allie and Noah’s Tearjerking Love Story (The Notebook)
This movie definitely fixed a lot of my bad nights in quarantine. Not one time did it ever fail to disappoint me. I am a sucker for a good love movie, and the love story Allie and Noah shared is iconic. The fight scene at the end of the movie is a scene I will forever be obsessed with. To this day, I will never pass up a night of watching The Notebook, cuddled up with my cat and a big bowl of buttery popcorn.
2. “A Run a Day Keeps the Stress Away”
Running is something that allows me to let go of all my worries and negative thoughts for a little while and live in the present moment. Running has had a lot of positive benefits to it. I have been able to stay in great shape, meet great friends, and boost my self-confidence. Just one step into the fresh air with the sun shining puts a big ole smile on my face.
3. Driving Around With My Girls
Late-night drives with my friends, blizzards from Dairy Queen, and Lewis Capaldi blaring through the roof is something that I absolutely could not live without. It fills my soul with so much joy. I live for the windows down, the warm weather, the smell of bonfires, and the sound of crickets. Driving around is always a vibe, no matter the circumstance. Sitting back, thinking about your life, and having meaningful conversations with the people that matter the most to you is what it’s all about.
4. Gummy Bears > Any Other Candy
Gummy bears are something I have never been big on, but my sister got me HOOKED on them during quarantine. However, I will not just eat any kind of gummy bears, they have to be Haribo. Haribo gummy bears are elite and blow every other brand out of the water. Gummy bears are my comfort treat and I could honestly eat them at any given time. They are good at a movie, while watching a game, in the car, with friends, and anywhere else. Gummy bears make me the happiest girl in the world.
5. My Precious Girl
Usually when I say “my precious girl” to people, they immediately go starstruck and think I am talking about a child. However, I am actually referring to my cat. When I say this cat is my everything, I absolutely mean it. She makes all my bad days just a bit better with her love and all the cuddles that she gives me. I have never been an animal person, and as dramatic as this may sound, this cat changed my life. She came into my life at a perfect time when I was struggling the most mentally and brought me so much necessary laughter and happiness. As my family likes to call her “Goodie”, I like to call her my best friend.
6. My Family Stays Undefeated
I have always been very much of a homebody and a family person, and here’s why. It is because my family is so loving and supportive. I can fully be myself without fear of being judged. Every time we are all together, the room is filled with so much joy. During quarantine, I felt so blessed and lucky to be surrounded by people who motivated me to get out of bed some days and helped make the best out of the situation we were in. We would go on long walks, watch new movies, play games, bike, and make delicious treats. I would not trade the moments made with family for anything.
7. Coffee stop, I Am in!
Let me tell you, ice capps from Tim Horton’s are my all-time favorite drink. Waking up in the morning and sipping on a fresh, cold ice capp immediately takes my mood from a two to a ten. What is funny is that I hate coffee, but I would drink an ice capp every day of the week if I could. The price is unbeatable, and the taste is delicious. Sometimes it is the little things in life that make us the happiest, and ice capps are one of my little things.
8. Subscribed to Madfit...Check!
Madfit is a youtube channel that I am obsessed with. This channel consists of a girl who makes tough, but rewarding workout videos. Talk about a great quarantine workout! I am able to do core, cardio, leg, arm, and yoga workouts all through this channel. With her song workouts, I not only break a good sweat but also boost my mood. Maddie’s channel has allowed me to build my core and stay motivated towards my goals. I am so glad that I came across her channel during quarantine, it has now become a big part of my fitness.
9. Naps Are My Favorite
Sometimes, a good nap is all it takes to a better day. It boosts my mood, energy, and ability when playing sports and hanging out with my friends. After the hardest or longest day, laying in my cozy, warm bed is so comforting and makes me feel safe. Taking a nap after a hard workout, or a day full of walking feels so rewarding and makes it feel like life is slowing down for a minute. Napping is the key to my happiness.
10. Music Is Good For The Soul
Music helps me to relieve stress, stay focused, and overall feel a lot more upbeat and happier. It is so powerful and has helped me through the ups and downs in my life. Music has allowed me to feel my emotions and it’s so soothing for my mind, body, and soul. Music is something that will always be there for me when nothing else is.
Riley Knox is a Coffee Addict
This year has definitely been hard, but with activities and people being around Riley Knox she made the best of her year. Riley was born in Rochester, Michigan where she then grew up in Dryden. She attends Dryden High School, where she is a current senior. She is a part of the National Honor Society, Students Against Destructive Decisions (S.A.D.D.), softball, and basketball. After high school, she plans on becoming a Respiratory Therapist. Riley has many favorites, but these made her top ten of the year.
1. Family First
Family is one of the main priorities in my life. I surround myself with family on some of my worst days, because I know they will make it better. Even having cousins ranging from 28-1 I have been able to connect with all of them. All of us get together often to help keep our Italian heritage alive. By having family game nights, parties, and hangouts often we always try to have fun, even when we lose some of the most important people in our lives.
2. Midnight Runs
I love taking long drives with my closest friends allowing us to clear our minds. With the music cranked loud with depressing, hype, or country music we let go of our worries and scream the song. By doing this I have been able to grow connections with people that I wasn't close with. We talk about things and the motto is, “What’s talked in the baddie stays in the baddie.” This is because we let go of our worries and share whatever we want without caring what it is about.
3. Hours of Laughter
I surround my life with laughter. By doing this I have been able to not only make my mood better but the people around me. Laughing sometimes can be a cover for a bad day. However, laughing has made me and my friends closer as we spent hours doing this. This is something that I will never get tired of doing.
4. Friends
Life being filled with some of my closest friends has made life more enjoyable. Being a part of teams from different schools and high school teams, I have been able to have connections with people that I thought I never would. Coming from a small school my class has always been close, as we all get along. Luckily, I have been able to find some best friends that I hope to have for a while. Friendships are super important to me as they are one of my main priorities.
5. Coffee for Days
Coffee is an everyday need, as I have become addicted to it. Without coffee, I will have a headache and it puts a damper on my day. The taste of coffee suits my taste buds, putting me in a good mood. Making coffee trips every day does have its downfalls, as my bank account drops three dollars every day. However, life without coffee wouldn't be a good life for me.
6. Craigy
My dad and I have always been close as he is one of my biggest role models. We have one of the funniest relationships where we listen to his favorite song on repeat on every car ride. He has always been someone that I am able to open up to. We are always making jokes and laughing at some of the craziest things.
7. Flannels for the win
Fall is one of the best seasons out of the year, as I am able to wear my favorite shirts. Flannels go with everything and can dress up a basic look. Wearing these I am able to go out in the fall comfortably. With the different colors and patterns, I am able to match it with anything. Fall brings me joy and wearing a shirt that makes me comfortable and warm makes the season even better.
8. Sports
Softball and basketball were two of the sports that I have grown up with and continue to play. With my final season of softball coming up and basketball being over I have been excited and sad. Losing two of the activities I love the most is sad, however, I will be moving on to the bigger and better things. The love that I have for these two sports will always be with me, no matter if I am playing them or not.
9. Small School Vibes
Being a part of one of the smallest schools in your area has its advantages and disadvantages. Going to Dryden I have been able to not only grow close to my class but others in the school. Dryden has been able to help me one-on-one with my education because of the class sizes. I have been able to seek help on anything from anyone in the school.
10. Music to my Ears
Music has always been a part of my life. It is on whenever I am cleaning, driving, drawing, or even just laying in bed. Being able to pick the music I want to hear either helps the mood I am in or keeps it the same. Music has been able to help me in many ways. I have learned a lot from music and the words being expressed through it.
Jack's Top Ten
The past year and a half, with the COVID-19 pandemic, everyone has had the ground taken from underneath them. I used the time I had off to rekindle what I love and spent a lot of time reflecting on why I am so connected to these personal inquiries. I mentioned personal places like Paul's Basketball Court and Cape Hatteras, but I also included things like food, drinks, books, and music that I have a deep-rooted connection with. This list doesn’t necessarily list things I can’t live without, but it represents people, places, and items that have helped me get through the toughest times in my life.
1. Paul’s Basketball Court
I have been a very avid basketball player for the past 8 years, but it wasn’t until about 3 years ago when I started to play at Paul’s basketball court on a regular basis. Ever since I acquired my license Paul let me come and go as I please and I will forever be grateful for that because this court was my safe haven. This court was with me through the toughest times of my life, and it was always there; It was never going to leave. I spent countless hours between those lines, shooting until I couldn’t see the rim anymore if I needed to that day. Having that place not only propelled my basketball skills, but it gave me a place to counsel myself and calm myself down.
2. Kobe Bryant
January 26, 2020, was one of the worst days in my recent history. Kobe Bryant, The Bean, Black Mamba, had left us with his young, aspiring daughter Gianna. I read the news on my phone and instantly started to get teary-eyed. This man meant so much to young kids like me who love the game of basketball, so to hear that news really hit home for me. I remember watching his highlights on a daily basis my freshman year, completely mesmerized with how he carried himself on the court; He was so calm, all the time. He played with such poise that I will never be able to achieve. He always had the sense that he had the game in his hands, and that’s a feeling I strived for every time I stepped on the court. I got Kobe-themed basketball shoes my last year to honor him and his efforts, but I will never be able to repay him for his influence on me and millions of other people across this globe.
The most difficult thing for me when he passed was that we were just seeing who Kobe Bryant really was, and what he was capable of. The man won an Oscar for god's sake. He put forth unmatched energy on the court, but put even more into being a “girl dad’, and I think it was just the beginning of a magnificent life of giving, caring, and loving life.
3. The calming aura of Golf
My uncle took me out to the golf course in 6th grade after my grandpa bought me a set of clubs, and I have fallen in love with the sport ever since. There is such a relaxing aspect of golf that can’t be compared to any other sport. It’s a sport that you can play with friends and alone, and in my opinion, it offers the toughest mental challenge of any other sport and that is why I love it so much. In order to play good golf, you have to remain poised and under control at all times, which can get tough for me because I am a very emotional player in every other sport I play. Golf is also another way for me to get away from everything, and it presents me with a place for peace and quiet.
4. Stouffer's Mac and Cheese
There is always a go-to meal you eat at home when your mom doesn't make dinner or you just get hungry around the house, and that meal for me is Stouffer's Mac and Cheese. I’ve been eating these for about four years now, and they can never go wrong for me. I like throwing bacon or bread crumbs in them to add some extra flavor and texture. This food is also special to me because it is what I always ate when I got back home late from sports events, friends' houses, and long trips. There is something about Stouffer's Mac and Cheese and the home-like vibe it gives me.
5. Energy Drinks
Although they are not healthy or good for you in any way, I like to indulge in energy drinks quite a bit. I used to get energy drinks all the time with my dad and ever since then I have been drinking them. I have slowed down on the number of energy drinks I drink because they are far from healthy, but I think it subconsciously brings me back to times with my dad when I drink them. When I take the first sip of a cold NOS or RedBull it takes me back to the boat on Lake St. Clair pulling up some massive pike with him, so I use that as an excuse to enjoy an energy drink here and there.
6. Warriors Ethos by Steven Pressfield
“Courage is inculcated, in almost all traditions, by a regime of training and discipline” is one of many quotes I thoroughly enjoy from Warriors Ethos by Steven Pressfield. Warriors Ethos is a book about the ethics of a warrior, hence the title. Warriors Ethos recognizes that each of us has enemies within our own hearts; vices and weaknesses like envy and greed, laziness and selfishness. It teaches the historical root of courage and sacrifice, and it helps me realize I can dig even deeper than I already have.
7. HNDRXX and FUTURE by Future
Throughout the course of my high school career, I have listened to countless different rappers and albums, but none compare to these two right here. There aren't many albums I can listen to front to back with no skips and these are both one of those albums. He dropped these albums together, and it showcases the versatility of Future and his rap. On HNDRXX he takes a much more chill approach with songs like Comin Out Strong and Solo, while throwing in songs like Testify and Incredible to add a little spice to the food. On the other hand, the album FUTURE is a much more upbeat album and gets you much more on the edge of your seat. I can listen to these albums if I’m bumping with my friends, or if I’m chilling riding home from the gym.
8. Cape Hatteras
Since my freshman year of high school, my family has made a trip to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina for a week every summer. The first year we went, we spread my grandma's and my uncle's ashes in the Atlantic, so this place will always hold a place in my heart. My family used to come down here all the time back when my mom was a child, and we just love the relaxed, kick-back aspect of this area. I don’t have a care in the world when I’m kicked back on a towel in 90-degree weather, and I get a chance to relax for a whole week.
9. The Morning Bite
Every time I used to go fishing with my Dad, we would get up at 4:30 in the morning to start getting ready for the morning bite. He was very avid about getting out on the water when the sun was just coming over the horizon, and it also paid for the best views on the water during that time. There’s something so exciting about trolling a bait across the bottom of the lake floor and it getting smashed by a huge walleye or pike; It’s truly an experience everyone should get to have. I have been fishing my whole life, and it teaches you patience in a way no other activity or sport can. No matter who many times you can throw a bait out, you never know if you’re going to have a good or bad day out on the water and that’s the most exciting part about fishing, you never know what’s going to happen.
10. Kyrie Basketball Shoes
Kyrie basketball shoes are the best basketball shoes on the planet hands down. I have worn a pair of Kyries since my 8th-grade year of basketball and I haven't worn a different kind of shoe since. Every player has the go-to shoe they get and the Kyries were mine. As a guard, the lightness of the shoe really helped me with my moves and my quick footwork on the court, and the grip on these shoes never failed to amaze me. I had a customized pair my last year of basketball with my dad's initials on the tongue. If I am playing basketball and I am wearing shoes, they will always be Kyries.
Teagan O’Bryan Can’t Exist Without Bagels and Rob Zombie
Dryden High School senior, Teagan O’Bryan, shares her love for all things carb-related, the smell of fresh spring rain, and how Rob Zombie shaped her personality.
Teagan O’Bryan, best known for being a senior at Dryden High School, is currently working to build up her resume to help the transition between high school and her pursuit for higher education. Though she is not positive about where she wants to attend college in the fall, several institutions have caught her eye, so keep an eye out for her soon to come final decision!
As president of the Dryden Chapter of the National Honor Society, senior class treasurer, DECA Chapter President, National Technical Honor Society member, Four County Community Foundation’s Youth Advisory Committee President, Virtual Enterprise Student Ambassador, and Imagineers firm CEO, Teagan has a lot on her mind. In a recent interview conducted over the phone to fit with social distancing guidelines, Ms. O’Bryan was able to share what 10 things keep her sane during these crazy times, and ultimately what she cannot live without.
1. Rain
“The feeling of rain hitting my skin, streaming down my face is an experience that truly sparks joy within me as nothing else can. Rain is something that is universally loved or hated, with few people feeling indifferent to the occasion. The crisp smell that pervades the air, the instant feeling of rejuvenation when the sun starts to peek through the once grey sky, rain is a truly beautiful thing. People laugh when I say my favorite thing in the world is rain, but it goes beyond the surface level of the phenomenon. Storms have a way of unifying people. Dancing in the rain with someone you love, enjoying each other’s presence while weathering the storm inside, hiding under the covers with your parent while they tell you there is nothing to be afraid of, that thunder is simply the sound of angels bowling in the clouds. There is a special power in rain. The sweet smell of new life and the promise of a new day after the clouds part.”
2. Bagels
“On a much less serious note, bagels are the one thing that has kept me sane during the pandemic. Yes, it sounds odd, but carbs are my comfort food, and bagels are a beautifully quick and efficient way to enjoy them.”
3. That 70’s Show
“I started watching this show when I was very young, watching it with my older brother, but it soon grew to be my favorite show of all time. Looking back, I can definitely see how this show has shaped my sense of humor, as over the years I have watched the whole series through over eight times (Even though the last two seasons suck), and I can see some similarities between my humor and the show.”
4. Rob Zombie
“I grew up with my mother being a die-hard music enthusiast, listening to one of the broadest ranges of music I have ever encountered. She listened to pretty much everything, spanning from country to heavy metal and everything in between. This impacted the way I view music, as I have grown to love all genres as well. I can distinctly remember driving to school listening to Rob Zombie music and falling in love with it. He recently released a new album and it was definitely the highlight of my month.”
5. Peach Nectarine RedBull
“As a sleep-deprived teenager, I have turned to pretty much any form of caffeine to help keep me awake long enough to deal with all the tasks I have on my plate at any given moment. I have tried almost every flavor of most energy drinks on the market and my all-time favorite will forever and always be the Peach Nectarine Redbull.”
6. Harry Styles
“From One Direction to his solo career, I have been an avid Harry Styles fan through and through. I have all of his songs memorized and often bore my family and friends gushing about how in love I am with a man I have never met, and probably never will. Can’t hurt to dream, right?”
7. Collecting Crystals
“Though it sounds odd, I have always had a love for rocks. When I was younger I would collect the prettiest ones I would find and happily display them in my room and even carry my favorite ones with me. This has developed into my love for collecting crystals and researching the meanings behind each one. I have amassed quite a number of crystals, but I still can’t help myself from picking up every pretty rock I encounter.”
8. Kombucha
“I used to hate the taste of kombucha, a fermented tea drink, but I kinda forced myself to like it, and now I crave the taste of it. It started as a way to improve my health and try something new, but now I just truly love discovering new flavors and enjoying the long-term benefits of it!”
9. Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA)
“For the past several years I have been a dedicated member of the Lapeer County Ed-Tech’s chapter of the Distributed Education Clubs of America, more commonly known as DECA. This program has impacted me in a way that no other activity I have participated in has. Being able to connect, network, and compete alongside a large group of like-minded individuals from all across the country has brought so much joy and so many opportunities into my life. I can still recall the intense feeling of excitement flooding my body the second I stepped into my first district competition, it’s a feeling I will never forget. Through these experiences, I have not only grown a strong interest in helping others, but I have also developed my skills as a leader and as a friend.”
10. Pop-Punk Music
“This is another thing I grew up absolutely loving. From Blink182 to Green Day, to the more recent music put out by Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker, I have always loved the feeling of pure joy that comes from this genre of music.”
What Keeps Jenna Pagano Going?
I am Jenna Pagano who is a high school senior at Dryden High School. After high school, I plan to go to my chosen 4-year private college to get a degree in Financial Planning and Insurance with Risk Management. For the most part, I am a very private person who takes a while to open up, but here I am going to attempt to show you what the things are that keep me going in life.
1. Christmas at my Grandparents
Each year during the holidays, my grandparents have their kids and grandkids over to celebrate Christmas. Over the years, it has become this big ordeal between gift exchanges, food, cookies, Santa hats, Elf ears, and having to choose an outfit that is not the same as the year before. Just recently, my mom and I had finally realized that certain people wear the same thing year after year because it is the only thing they have for the holiday or it is the only time that they can wear the outfit.
2. Christmas Hallmark Movies
Christmas movies are okay and Christmas Hallmark movies are okay but watching the Christmas Hallmark movies with your family is something else. From having the plot and ending be predictable with the characters that are normally the same people from each movie, it gets interesting. This causes my family to ‘predict’ the next scene or what is going to happen next. Along with loud outbursts that end up being some sort of rude remark that is aimed towards me.
3. Bonfires
Bonfires over the summer and fall are things that I look forward to when it is way too cold outside. This is from the conversations that arise when it gets late and the unhealthy amount of marshmallows that may be eaten. Along with being able to look up at the stars and be filled with joy because of their own beauty in their own way.
4. Boating
Every year over the summer, I go boating on my grandparents boat(s). Going boating with them has been something that I have done ever since I was little while now it has become a tradition. It is like a tradition that isn’t exactly out there spoken, it's more of it happens out of enjoyment. Along with the family time and the embarrassing pictures that come out of it. While now we have our own boat that my family is able to go on more often than when we (mainly I) go boating with my grandparents.
5. Photography
I have always enjoyed taking photos ever since I was four. Over the years, it has grown into a passion/hobby that I would do all the time for any occasion/event. I did not realize how important it was to me or if the images that I took were good until I sat down and had reflected on them. One of my friends wanted me to take their senior pictures before they hired a professional photographer and I asked if they were sure since I was a rookie and they said yes let's do it. So I took her senior pictures, edited a handful, and gave her a flash drive with all rights to the images and she fell in love with them. She even started to refer some people to me that I had to deny a few because of location issues.
6. Cheerleading
Cheerleading has been a huge part of my life. From starting off in fourth grade and still doing it now as a senior in high school is mind-blowing. Being able to do something for so long without giving up, becoming bored, and still being able to learn so much is crazy to me. Along with the fact that it can and has taught me so much about myself, the sport, and life lessons. All while being recruited by colleges that you have not even heard of before is mind-boggling.
7. Jumpsuits, Overalls & Flannels
My go-to outfits would have to be jumpsuits, overalls, and flannels. If I had a choice and did not need anything else to wear - like ever - my closet would consist of only these things. Some say I have a problem and need to stop wearing or buying flannels since I have 8 of them, while I think that I do not have enough and need more before too much time passes. Along with how I can never find jumpsuits and overalls that fit me because I am so short but when I do, that is the only brand I will buy them from until I find a new brand that fits me as well.
8. Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate
Whatever it is about this chocolate, I will eat the whole entire thing. Eating a full XL bar of this chocolate is probably super unhealthy but I will still do it. Especially if I have wanted to crawl into a hole and disappear for a little bit or if I am leaving to come back from vacation. This chocolate brings out my sweet tooth especially since I don’t care for a lot of chocolates.
9. Steak 'n Shake
If I could buy a franchise it definitely would be Steak 'n Shake. This place is so good, especially if you are down south. Every time we pass one or are stopping to get food from one, my eyes light up and I do a little dance in my seat. At this point, my family does not even ask where I would like to get food from because they know my answer will be Steak 'n Shake.
10. Florida
I don't know about you, but being in the sunshine is like showing most people a puppy. Being down south, soaking up the sun, and enjoying life brings a big ole smile to my face. The sun up here in Michigan versus the sun down in the south are two different things. The sun up in Michigan is something that helps us see and helps give people a natural tan. While the sun in Florida is something that makes you happy and excited for the day or future all while doing what the sun in Michigan can as well.
Erin Paton Has a Thing for Treats and Target
My name is Erin Paton and I am a senior at Dryden High School. In high school, I have played various sports like volleyball and track. I have also been a part of clubs including SADD and the National Honor Society. I have plans to go to college at Michigan State University and get a degree that will get me into the health field.
1. Volleyball
The first time I played volleyball was back in 6th grade through a recreational league. I did it with a close friend and we had a lot of fun playing so when junior high came around we were ready to play volleyball for the school. I did this for many years but didn’t get really serious about it until sophomore year. This was when I started playing club and really improving. This made me completely fall in love with the sport and gave me a lot of motivation to work harder. Even though it is over for me, I will still cherish the memories and of course, play every once in a while for fun.
2. Supernatural
About 6 months ago I started binge-watching a series called Supernatural on Netflix. It was a show I was quite familiar with because my brothers watched it growing up so I had seen a few episodes. At first, it was like any other show, but it began to get really good really quickly. My brother and I would then watch it together when he was home and had long discussions about the plot. It was both a bonding experience and a great show in general. A couple of weeks ago I finally finished all 15 seasons. I am sad it’s over but happy it happened.
3. Avocado Toast
My absolute favorite thing to eat for breakfast is avocado toast. I like to toast some bread and then add cream cheese and mashed avocado to the top. Then I will add either fresh lemon or lime to the toast to add some extra flavor. If you really want to I sometimes add a poached egg as well. I actually learned this from one of my best friends when I was on vacation in Florida a few months ago. It is such a filling and nutritious meal that never gets old.
4. The U.S Virgin Islands
For my senior spring break trip, some friends and our moms went to St. Thomas U.S Virgin Islands. It is the only time I have been on a tropical vacation like this so the entire experience was amazing. The views from our villa, the beaches, and even driving around were stunning. We were able to explore multiple different beaches on multiple islands over the week. Each of these beaches had its own unique snorkeling area so we were able to see a lot of really cool marine life. It was simply a thrilling experience, one you only get once in a lifetime.
5. Skiing
I first learned to ski when I was a small child. I absolutely loved hitting the slopes with my parents and brothers for years while we were kids. Once my brothers got older, we stopped going as often. It was just a few years ago when we decided to go for Christmas and I completely fell in love again. I started going more and more often both with my family and friends. This year, my parents bought me skis so I could go more often without paying as much. This encouraged me to go more than ever and even helped me improve. I expect to continue doing this until I physically cannot anymore.
6. Camping
For as long as I can remember, every summer we go on multiple trips to various campgrounds around Michigan. My family as well as two other families take our campers and spend a week in a popular area. We go to beaches, cook huge dinners, sit at the campfire, and tons of other fun things while we are on these trips. It is a great time to relax and spend time with these people that we don’t get to see all the time.
7. Orange Juice
Orange Juice has been a recent newfound love of mine. The reason is that on my spring break trip to the Virgin Islands we drank it every morning with our breakfast. We would always go out to the same spot that had an amazing view. So whenever I drink it I can picture myself in that exact spot looking out at the Caribbean Sea.
8. Music
Music has always been a big part of my life. Not only have I learned how to play multiple different instruments, but I also danced for most of my life which had me around music constantly. Most recently, I have been obsessed with making playlists. I have different ones for every occasion. I have one for working out, driving around, a sad playlist, a party playlist, and many more. It is all I look forward to when getting into my car because it is quality alone time I get to have.
9. Target
Although there aren’t many Target stores near me, I will always take the opportunity to go. Many people may see it as just another grocery store, but it really is so much more. They have so many different types of products in the store that I always leave with something I never knew I needed. It definitely isn’t an everyday task because my bank account would be empty.
10. Everything Flavored Pretzels
My go-to snack any day would be everything flavored pretzels with cream cheese. A close friend of mine introduced me to these recently and I have been hooked ever since. I think that it tastes exactly like an everything bagel with cream cheese, which is a food I love to eat. They are filling and taste amazing, I absolutely recommend them.
Alexis Schuhrke Can’t Survive Without Soccer and Murder Documentaries
Alexis Schuhrke, a student at Dryden High School is known to be a very optimistic person who is always ready for adventure. She is focusing on her future years in life and is nearing her decision on her choice of higher academia. Throughout this crazy last year that we have been having, she has been on a journey to try and figure out who she is, as well as what she can ultimately not live without.
1. Playing Soccer
I have been playing soccer ever since I was eight years old and I will always enjoy the feelings I get whenever I play it. The warm sun on your face when you are running is just a great feeling, as well as hearing the sound of the net when you score a goal. It is one of my biggest stress relievers because I feel extremely proud of myself after I have a game or practice. I feel satisfied with the work I put in and I know that I will always work hard at it, and always work even harder to become better. I fell in love with it from such a young age and it has become such therapy to me. I love the exercise I get. I love the teammates I get to play with. I love scoring goals.
2. Reading Books
Putting myself into a whole other world and imagining doing things in a completely different matter is another huge therapeutic activity I am completely obsessed with. Reading gives me an escape. It gives me a way to take my mind off things. I always have Barnes and Noble gift cards on hand and always love going into cute little vacation town bookstores.
3. Baking
I am from a family that loves food and from a young age, I had always enjoyed mixing food together and seeing what I could make. When I finally grew up and understood how to read directions, I always wanted to be in the kitchen making cookies, brownies, and cakes. Now when I have free time, that is usually what I am doing. I always feel so accomplished whenever I make some baked goods and give them to others.
4. Supernatural
I am a huge Supernatural fan. Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles always have a way of making me laugh while combining a great storyline about ghosts and all things paranormal. Every episode has a new story about a ghost or a vampire or a werewolf and those kinds of things interest me. They are a total fantasy that puts me into another world just like reading does. It went on for fifteen seasons and it was fifteen seasons of greatness. It was about the only show that I have ever watched the whole way through.
5. Traverse City
I am a big van of vacations and traveling. And some of my funnest vacations have been in Traverse City. It is a city that has everything that you need with shops and stores everywhere, but it also has water and forest and beaches everywhere. It is so pretty and relaxing there. I have so many memories there and it has become a place that I absolutely adore going to.
6. MadFit Youtube Channel
Working out, especially at home has become a huge thing in my life since March of last year. I enjoy getting exercise in and the way that MadFit does it inspires me. Maddy is a girl who posts all her workouts and challenges on Youtube and she has such a positive personality and outlook on life. She makes me want to work out for myself and she makes me determined to try all her dance workouts and makes me want to have a more optimistic view of the world, despite all the craziness it is going through right now.
7. Driving Around
I have become attached to my car and driving around whenever I get stressed. It is a way for me to release my anxiety and go be out by myself for a while. I love blasting music with the windows down when it is nice out and just clearing my mind of all of my problems. It makes me feel 100 times better.
8. Murder Documentaries
I really enjoy watching these sorts of shows and I just binge them. I can watch any episode without feeling like I lost track of where I was because they are all different. I find them very sad because of all the murders, but they do interest me a lot, especially when they find the killer and put him in jail.
9. Chocolate Ice Cream
Chocolate ice cream puts me in a great mood and is a staple in my life. It’s a food I get whenever I’m sad and it instantly makes me slightly happier. It just tastes so good and I usually get it when I am with my boyfriend on ice cream runs, so that just makes it so much more special to me.
10. Listening to Music
In all my days in this life, I remember music being a constant factor. Music makes me feel good. Music makes me happy. Music can evoke emotion from me. I listen to it in my car and at home. There is never not a good time for music. It makes everything better and there are just so many songs in this world and I always love finding new music I can listen to.
Claire Sobek Enjoys Celebrating Holidays and Eating Breakfast
Dryden High School Senior Claire Sobek enjoys hanging out with friends and snowboarding, among many other things. She is currently working at McDonald’s and planning to attend the University of Detroit Mercy next year after graduating high school to become a dentist.
1. My Dog
Whenever I am in a bad mood, the quickest thing that is able to change that is my dog, Zoey. Whether I am getting home from a long day at school and she is waiting by the door ready to greet me, or I am sick in bed and she is laying with me, she is always able to make me feel better.
2. Christmas
Out of all the holidays in a year, Christmas is by far my favorite. There are so many reasons to love Christmas including the snow, the decorations and music, getting to buy presents for loved ones, and spending time with family, but the reason it is so special to me is because of all the traditions I have surrounding it. These include baking cookies with my grandma, going gift shopping and picking out a tree with my family, opening new pajamas from my mom on Christmas Eve, and many more. The whole Christmas season brings me so much joy and is therefore one of my favorite things.
3. Tubing
During the summer every year my family takes multiple trips up to my cabin up north. On these trips, we spend most of the time out on the water doing one of my favorite things ever, which is tubing. I’ve spent my summers getting whipped around on a tube for as long as I can remember. The feeling as the boat takes a sharp turn and the tube just slingshots sideways while hitting a massive wave is amazing. I have made so many memories tubing with my family over the years and that is why it is something that I absolutely enjoy doing.
4. Breakfast Food
My favorite meal out of a day is definitely breakfast. I love all breakfast foods because they all taste amazing. Pancakes, waffles, cereal, eggs, donuts, oatmeal, sausage, fruit, and muffins are all so good. If I could I would eat breakfast for every meal of the day. The only thing that helps me wake up early in the morning on school days is eating breakfast because I love it so much.
5. Autumn
Autumn has always been my favorite season and I look forward to it all year. The smell of fall makes me happy and the leaves changing colors are so pretty. It is also my favorite because of all the memories I have of past years during the fall. When the town of Dryden still threw the Fall Festival every year, I would have my birthday party during it and I would get to spend the day visiting with my family and friends while hanging out downtown. Every Halloween I would also have a party for the holiday and again would get to see my family members that I wouldn’t normally get to see. Nowadays I love the season because I spend it going to haunted houses and cider mills with my friends and family.
6. My Phone
The one thing that I don’t think I could live without, other than food and water, is my phone. Without it I wouldn’t be able to do so many things including texting and calling my friends, keeping important dates in my digital calendar, finding out what days I work and when each week, and entertaining myself when I am bored. Although I would actually be able to live without it, it certainly does make my life a lot easier.
7. Snowboarding
Much like tubing in the summer, snowboarding is another activity I absolutely love doing. When I go to my cabin up north in the winter I always go snowboarding with my family. Riding the ski lift and going down the hill while the wind blows against my face is always so much fun. I also love it because I get to spend time with either my friends or family.
8. Easter
Although I do look forward to Christmas almost all year, Easter is another holiday that I absolutely love. Whether it's the fact that it is during the beginning of spring and everything is starting to warm up and start growing, or that I always get a bunch of food, I love Easter. Every year I wake up on Easter to a basket full of food and then I go to two different parties to eat more food. Because I love eating, I really like this holiday.
9. Netflix
Just like my phone, Netflix is something that I use almost every day. Whether I’m eating, about to go to bed, or just straight-up bored, I am almost constantly watching something. Also, I never run out of things to watch on Netflix because of the amount of actually interesting shows and movies on there. I also love it because it doesn’t play any ads.
10. Music
No matter what kind of mood I am in, I always enjoy listening to music. There is so much and so many different kinds to listen to. Music can make any car ride more enjoyable. It also helps me focus on work, especially when I am in a loud room. At night if I can’t fall asleep I can just put on relaxing music and in minutes I will be passed out. I listen to music so much and love it a lot.
