A New Year, The Best You
Have you been meaning to display more self-confidence at work or in the classroom? Experts say, this may work to create over-confidence, which could be counterproductive to the knowledge and expertise you are wishing to exude. Instead, try aiming for self-compassion.
Self-compassion is treating yourself with the same love, support, and kindness you would a loved one. Thinking in terms of our own humanity, self-compassion is recognizing we are imperfect creatures living in an imperfect world. Instead of faking it til you make it, having an open and honest view of a situation, goals, or work may allow you to accept criticism and set-backs. Learning resilience can help realign our thoughts and look toward creating positive next-steps.
In 2018, we hope you have a blessed year filled with many opportunities to grow in your own self-compassion. We would love to see you and hear from you soon!

How to Accept a Teaching Position
After an offer has been extended, don't feel like you have to accept the offer in that moment, especially if you are considering other offers or waiting to hear from other schools of interest. Here are some things to take in to account:
- Do what is best for you and your family.
- Be honest - if you are still interviewing ask for additional time, i.e., twenty-four hours.
- When accepting a position, be professional and fulfill the contract (reneging on an offer reflects poorly on you, your university, and can at times result in you losing the opportunity to teach in any of the districts in the area).
- Open contracts are commonly offered at a teacher fair/recruiting event. This is extended when a school knows they want to hire you but they don't know where in the district there is an opening, and they don't want to lose you to someone else.
- The terms of an open contract for one school may be different for another.
- Ensure you understand the details of each open contract, such as, ask if you have a voice in the placement decision.
- Take time to consider the pros and cons of the contract.
- Still stuck? Visit your career adviser. Make an appointment with Sarah by calling: 973.761.9355

Fulbright Opportunities
Our thank-you to former KDP E-Board President Daria Pizzuto for sharing the teacher exchange opportunities below (sponsored by the Department of State) with our KDP members!
The Fulbright-Hays Seminars Abroad Program provides short-term seminars abroad for U.S. educators in the social sciences and humanities to improve their understanding and knowledge of the peoples and cultures of other countries. Each seminar features educational lectures and activities specifically designed for the group, including visits to local schools and organizations, meetings with teachers and students, and visits to cultural sites. Participants draw on their experiences during the program to create new, cross-cultural curricula for their classrooms and school systems back in the U.S.
In 2018, summer programs will be offered in Ecuador, India, and Poland. A total of 48 awards are available (sixteen per program). The program covers airfare, room and board, and program costs. Teacher participants are responsible for a cost-share of $600.
The 2018 Seminars Abroad application is now available on the G5 website at www.g5.gov.
Deadline is February 28, 2018
