WHY SST?
Dear SST Sugar Land Learning Community,
I want to draw your attention to our mission, core values, and vision. Here at SST Sugar Land, we believe that every student has potential, and our teachers are there to help unleash that potential. When a student has completed their time at our school and entered adulthood, the student will not be judged by their test performance, but by the quality of their work and character. This doesn’t mean that our students’ academic success is not a priority, but rather our belief that academic success, high-quality work and character building go hand in hand. Please have a look at our mission, core values, and vision below.
Mission:
SST drives academic and socio-emotional development through a rigorous college preparatory, STEM-based learning model. SST's model is anchored on 21st-century skills, embraced by a character building approach, and delivered in an enriching, safe, and student-centered learning environment.
CORE VALUES
In SST, M.A.G.I.C. is about to happen! Here are our core values
M: Moral Compass
A: Accountability
G: Generosity
I: Innovation
C: Citizenship
Vision
SST Vision Statement is “Nurturing world-class scholars and ethical citizens to build a better future for all.”
I wanted to breakdown the three components of our vision: academic success, high-quality work, and character building to brainstorm what we can do as educators, leaders, parents, community representatives, and students to reach our goals.
ACADEMIC SUCCESS
Students
- Demonstrate proficiency and deeper understanding: show mastery in a body of knowledge and skills within each discipline
- Apply their learning: transfer knowledge and skills to novel, meaningful tasks
- Think critically: analyze, evaluate, and synthesize complex ideas and consider multiple perspectives
- Communicate clearly: write, speak, and present ideas effectively in a variety of media within and across disciplines
Teachers and Leaders
- Ensure that curriculum, instruction, and assessments are rigorous, meaningful, and aligned with standards
- Use assessment practices that position students as leaders of their own learning
- Use meaningful data for both teachers and students to track progress toward learning goals
- Engage all students in daily lessons that require critical thinking about complex, worthy ideas, texts, and problems. We want authentic engagement in our classrooms.
Parents
- Be involved and engaged in your child’s education to help your children learn and meet educational goals.
- Support your child and his/her teacher in your child’s education
HIGH-QUALITY WORK
Students
- Create complex work by demonstrating higher-order thinking, use of multiple perspectives and transfer of understanding.
- Demonstrate craftsmanship by creating work that is accurate and beautiful in conception and execution.
- Create authentic work through original thinking, connecting to real-world issues and formats, and when possible, create work that is meaningful to the community beyond the school
Teachers and Leaders
- Design tasks that ask students to apply, analyze, evaluate and create as part of the learning process.
- Use models of excellence, critique, and multiple drafts to support all students in producing work of exceptional quality.
- Connect students to the world beyond school through meaningful fieldwork, expert collaborations, research, and service learning
- Be a role model for your students!
Parents
- Communicate with your child’s teacher about your child’s work in school.
- Be involved in your child’s project, and support your child in creating high-quality work.
- Be a role model for your child!
CHARACTER
Students
- Work to become effective learners: develop the mindsets and skills for success in college, career, and life (e.g., initiative, responsibility, perseverance, collaboration)
- Work to become ethical people: treat others well and stand up for what is right (e.g., empathy, integrity, respect, compassion)
- Contribute to a better world: put their learning to use to improve communities (e.g., citizenship, caring, service learning, dedication)
- Internalize our core values, 5-pillars in our school: Be Respectful, Be Prepared, Be Involved, Follow the directions, Make wise choices.
- Involve a monthly character trait development process.
Teachers and Leaders
- Elevate student voice and leadership in classrooms and across the school
- Make habits of scholarship visible across the school and in daily instruction
- Model a school-wide culture of respect and compassion
- Prioritize social and emotional learning, along with academic learning, across the school
- Find teaching moments for our core values, 5 pillars (Be Respectful, Be Prepared, Be Involved, Follow the directions, make wise choices.) of our school in your classrooms and model them to your students.
Parents
- Be involved and be engaged in your child’s character development
- Synchronize with the school for the monthly character trait
- Communicate and support your child’s teacher
- I want to thank https://eleducation.org for creating such a nice document for schools.
