Dear Mays Family,
February is Black History Month and we are taking the time to celebrate Dr. Benjamin E. Mays. Dr. Mays was born in 1894 in the Epworth community to a family of farmers. Dr. Mays was the Spiritual Mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He was the President of Morehouse College for 27 years. Dr. Mays served as an advisor to President Kennedy, President Johnson, and President Carter. Dr. Mays' legacy lives on. What an honor to have our school renamed after such an inspirational American Hero from our hometown of Greenwood. His legacy will live on through our Mays Rays as they SHINE throughout their community.
During the month of February and March, we are going to have the opportunity to partner with the Greenwood Museum and the Greenwood Performing Arts to bring in the Blues Artist Mac Arnold to connect and collaborate with our Mays Rays. Mrs. Allen (Music) and Mrs. Simpson (Art) will be teaching and building the background of the Blues and Harlem Renaissance. We are so excited and honored to have the opportunity to learn more about the Blues with a legendary musician from South Carolina. We will be extending an invitation in the next couple of weeks inviting our families to a concert with him at the Greenwood High Fine Arts Center.
We will have Valentine Parties on Feb. 14th. Parents, please bring in all store bought items. Please ensure there are no allergies in the classroom prior to sending your items.
