CELEBRATIONS!
Great things are happening at WCS!
Last Thursday some of our students attended the District II Honors Band & Chorus auditions at Cony High School in Augusta. The students did so well, and were happy and relaxed. They went in feeling prepared and confident, and the work they had all done together really paid off. It’s easy to get overwhelmed by dozens of different students playing in a large auditorium, and by the pressure of people listening to just you when it’s your turn, but we couldn’t have been more proud of how they supported each other! They were positive role models, and mature representatives of the Woolwich community. WELL DONE!
THANKSGIVING FEAST
On Thursday, Mrs. Wells and Ms. Small served up a FEAST, including turkey & gravy, green beans, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and a roll, with apple crisp for dessert! RSU 1 celebrities, Amber Caron and Katie Joseph event stopped by to help with serving the food!
HOPE INITIATIVE PROGRAMS
Students in grades K-2 have been practicing compassion for others and learning about the need for clean drinking water. They organized a pocket change donation to benefit HIP in Kenya, and their work to provide clean drinking water and food at a school. The WCS community brought in change for two weeks and were able to donate over $812, with the help of an extremely generous matching grant! CLICK HERE to learn more about how you can help! PLANNED ABSENCES
Is your family planning on a trip that will require your student to miss a few days of school? Please CLICK HERE to access the WCS Planned Absence form to excuse your student from school! This allows teachers to gather any necessary work for your student and will help us accurately record and excuse their absences.
ALL students, grades K-8 will have ½ days with dismissal at 11:55AM on both Monday and Tuesday 11/21 and 11/22. WCS conferences will only be held on Monday 11/21 between 12:00PM - 6:00PM.
Once again, we will be scheduling Parent/Teacher Conferences online with PTCFast. On this site you will be able to schedule a conference for all of your children. If you do not have internet access, you can call the office (443-9739) and we will schedule the conference(s) for you, or answer any questions.
LOST & FOUND
Our Lost & Found is OVERFLOWING! Please ask your students to see if they've lost anything. Parents are also welcome to stop by and look through what has been collected; Parent/Teacher conferences might be the perfect time to look things over! The Lost & Found is located in front entry of the building.
All unclaimed items will be donated over Thanksgiving break.

8th GRADE WREATH SALES
The holidays are closer than you think, and the 8th graders are selling wreaths! You can purchase a wreath from any 8th grader, or in the office. The 18” finished wreath is adorned with either a red or burgundy bow, and the price is $20.00, or two for $35.00. Proceeds from the sale help support the 8th grade trip to Washington, D.C. Wreath Sales are through November 28, and will be ready for pick up on Wednesday, December 1. Mrs. Fisher will remain after school until 5:30 pm on Dec. 1 for wreath pick up. Students will deliver their wreaths to the purchaser unless other arrangements are made. Please have the money collected when you come to pick up your wreaths.
CHEWONKI VISITS SECOND GRADE
Second graders spent an exciting hour with Colleen from Chewonki's Traveling Natural History Program on Monday morning. This interactive program introduced students to our native warm-blooded vertebrates: Maine mammals and tied in with our recent science unit, “Animal Adaptations.” Each student studied a mounted animal and observed its characteristics, such as teeth, feet, and fur. This gave us clues to its habitat and eating habits. We also got to see and touch other specimens such as a collection of skulls and animal skins.
Our favorite part was getting to meet Ginny, the opossum. Thanks to the PTA for providing us with this wonderful experience!
SNOW DAY INFO
Is it too early for a reminder? In Maine, you never know...On days where there is inclement winter weather and roads are not safe, schools may have a delayed start, or the school building will be closed for the day.
- In addition to an automated phone call to each household, notice will be made on TV Channels 6, 8 and 13 beginning at 5:30am.
- School cancellations can also be heard over the following radio stations: WGAN 560 AM, WCLZ 98.9 FM, WPOR 101.9 FM, WJTO 730AM, WMGX 93.1 FM.
- Remember that the district as a group is listed under "RSU1", not individual towns or schools.
- Because of their short school days, any time there is a 2-hour delay for K -12 students, there will be no Pre-K that day.
Please be sure the school has your correct phone number, so that you will receive all notifications.
HEALTHY HIGHLIGHTS
Vision and hearing screening are mandatory for grades Pre-K, K, 1, 3, 5, and 7. As your school nurse, I feel it is important to have every grade screened. My rationale for testing everyone is to capture information on students who are new to the school or anyone who may have been absent during the last round of testing. To ensure that each student gets tested I TRY to test each student every year. With that said, if you do not hear from me, consider the old adage that no news is GOOD news. I will not contact you unless we need to chat about the results. If your child has glasses please make sure they are coming to school with them, not just for the testing but for everyday use in the classroom. ~ Roberta Sherwood, R.N., BSN, M.Ed
SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT
We have been hard at work writing letters to each other using the Wildcat Express! This month, we have seen almost 100 letters sent back and forth. This month, students can earn a fun pencil by sending a letter to a friend.
CLYNK bags are available in the school office. Bottles and cans collected in these bags and returned to a Hannaford Clynk center will benefit the 8th grade class!
We had a fire drill on Friday morning and students exited the building safely and quickly. We are so proud of how seriously everyone takes these drills, and how respectful everyone is while waiting for further instructions.
Students have been enjoying time in the outdoor classroom! Lessons are rooted in science but are often tied into other subjects such as math, poetry, art etc. One example is the activity: We All Need Trees. In this lesson students are often surprised to learn how many different products we get from trees. This activity can help students learn just how much we depend on trees in our daily lives.
Boat Builders have completed their wooden stool project and they were sent home with students this week. As always- the stools are GORGEOUS, and the hard work that students put into the project is evident!
This is the place to get all your WCS-branded clothing and accessories.
