Someone has said that character is doing the right thing when no one is looking. I would like to add that character is doing the right thing even when everyone is looking. Character is who we really are, but reputation is just what people think of us. We need to be more focused on our character than our reputation. If we focus on our character then our reputation will take care of itself.

It's easy to let our emotions get the best of us. It's easy to react. It's easy to say and do things that we will regret. Don't do easy. Stay focused. Remember that at our weakest moments is when someone will want to film us and post it on social media and portray to others who we really aren't. Today and everyday, let us always make everyone proud of the Wildcat Way!

Our District purchased a new communication system to communicate with parents and communities. The new communication system uses the new Limestone County app, email, text messaging, and social media. If you haven't downloaded the app, please do so.

To stay updated on what's happening at West Limestone High School or any Limestone County school, please keep your child's information up-to-date in PowerSchool when you enroll and throughout the year. If your phone number or email changes throughout the year, please email Anita Kyle at Anita.Kyle@lcsk12.org to make those corrections.

Please join us Thursday, September 28 at 5pm for a Title I Parent Meeting. We will meet in the cafeteria.

If you can't join us on Thursday, then come on Friday, September 29 at 11am.

This meeting is required by all Title I Schools. At this meeting, we will discuss what it means to be Title I and how you are involved in the process.

We have had some problems with Middle Schoolers and social media, especially Snapchat. Parents, please be aware of your child's social media accounts and how they are using them. Check out their MY EYES ONLY on Snapchat for pictures saved in a private account.

How old do kids have to be to have Snapchat? According to the terms of service, users must be 13. You have to enter your birth date to set up an account, but there's no age verification, so it's easy for kids under 13 to sign up. Common Sense Media rates Snapchat OK for teens 16 and up, mainly because of the exposure to age-inappropriate content and the marketing ploys, such as quizzes, that collect data.

Do messages really disappear on Snapchat? It depends. If you set a time limit on a snap, it will disappear after it's viewed. However, recipients can take a screenshot of an image using their phones or a third-party screen-capture app. If someone uses their phone to take a screenshot of what you sent, you will be notified. But screen captures from third-party apps don't trigger a notification. For these reasons, it's best for teens to understand that nothing done online is really temporary. Before sending a snap of themselves or someone else, it's important to remember that it's out of their control after it's shared.

High School Students' Job Opportunity

When/Where: Tuesday & Thursday at Sugar Creek

Job Description: helping students with homework, helping the teacher, or assisting with an activity. Student assistants make $10 per hour, 2 hours per day

We will be starting an After School Detention for students who have 5 or more tardies to any specific class.

The WLHS Fall Formal will be on November 4th at Southern Charm in the Owens Community.

We want to be able to provide fun activities for our students, so we need your help to ensure we can continue with the extra activities.

To ensure we continue with these activities and possibly offer more of them throughout the year, we need to have proper behavior and appropriate clothing at all events--whether it's a formal, pep rally, or any school event.

The Formal will be split into 2 groups: 9th-10th and 11th-12th grade. Each group will have 2 separate times.

Athletics and other extra-curricular activities are valued parts of our schools. Students must maintain high academic standards in order to participate in these activities. For the immediate preceding school year:

• High School - Students entering grades 10-12 must have passed 6 subjects that total 6 Carnegie units of credit with a minimum composite numerical average of 70 (must include the four core: English, Math, Science, and Social Studies).

• Middle School – Students entering grades 8-9 must have passed 5 new subjects with a minimum composite numerical average of 70 in those five subjects.

• This weekend our cross country team traveled to Wilson High School for the Warriors Invitational and our JV Girls took home first!
• We had 3 top 10 finishers: Travis McCluskey(5th boys jv), Rainey Black (6th girls jv) and Kaisey Silvar(10 girls jv).
• In addition, we had multiple personal records including Sucely Vicente with her first sub 26 minute 5k.

Congratulations to our Middle School Volleyball Team for winning the Athens Invitational Tournament this weekend!

Support our Athens City and Limestone County bands at the 2023 Night of the Bands at East Limestone’s Cavnar Field on October 24th at 6:30pm. Admission is $5. Tickets are available at the gate, or from any band student. Go Band!

Habitual/excessive unexcused absences from school may require Board officials to refer the matter to juvenile authorities or to initiate truancy proceedings. Seven unexcused absences within a school year constitute a student being truant for the purpose of filing a petition with the Court. The following Early Warning timeline will define the truancy status of a student:

1. 1st truancy/unexcused absence – Warning
2. 3rd unexcused absence – students will no longer be permitted to participate in field trips
3. 5th unexcused absence – parent and administrator conference
4. 7th unexcused absence – court

Only doctor notes will be accepted for student absences once a case has been filed in truancy court.

ATTENDANCE

• Students will have 10 days per year that can be excused by a parent note for the following reasons: personal illness, hospitalization/medical appointments, emergency, death in the immediate family, court subpoena, or religious holiday
• If absent, the parent has 3 days to send in an excuse- either parent or doctor's excuse or the absence will be unexcused.
• 3 or more unexcused absences within a semester = no participation in school field trips
• E-Learning Days - students who qualify are allowed 6 days per year. One of the qualifications is no unexcused days. E-learning days do not count as absences.
• Students with unexcused absences may make up work for up to 70% credit.
• For every 3 Unexcused Tardies, parents will lose 1 Parent Note.

Each student who meets the requirements of the E-Learning Day Policy, can use up to 6 days a year without being considered absent. See the E-Learning Day form below for the requirements.

To address problems with chronic absenteeism, students in Grades K-12 who accumulate 18 or more absences, whether deemed excused or unexcused, are by definition chronically absent and will not be allowed to participate in non-academic school activities (e.g., prom, in-school games, dances, and field days).

TITLE I STATUS

We are a Title I School. Our status as a Title I School is determined by the percentage of students who qualify for free/reduced lunch. Title I Schools are provided federal money based on their rank of the percentage of free/reduced lunches within our school district. This money provides schools with the necessary funds to hire staff to reduce classroom sizes or interventionists who work with students to close achievement gaps. Based on last year's free-reduced lunch count, our school will receive about $148,824.12 which will be used to hire two teachers and two interventionists. Of that amount, $2276.17 will be used for Parent & Family Engagement.
