THE FORECAST
A look ahead at what is happening on the Monsoons' campus
APRIL 19, 2022
From the Principal's Desk
I certainly hope that you all had a great spring break! We certainly are now officially in the "HOME STRETCH."
BE WATER - FINISH STRONG!
While I cannot take credit for what I am going to share with you, I would like to say that I have been working with this mantra for some time now. A former colleague of mine one day told me to be water. I pressed and asked what he meant. He answered…it just finds a way. Fast forward a few years and after countless google searches, I have since discovered that this was a quote from the one and only Bruce Lee.
“Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way around or through it…Be water, my friend.” – Bruce Lee
How does this apply to Mayfair? The parallels are obvious considering that we are the Monsoons! Among many other things Monsoons are often associated with heavy rainfall or water. I continue to challenge all monsoon families, students and staff to be water. Why?
- Water finds a way.
- Water adjusts, It takes many forms
- It reconstitutes itself to thrive and survive.
- Water is resilient, it is ever present.
- Water sustains, refreshes and challenges us.
In many ways: Teaching is water
BENJAMIN BRIGHAM a little known teacher/author expands on this…
"Outstanding teachers, like water, adapt themselves to the circumstances and sustain, refresh and challenge their learners. These teachers identify their aims and the path of least resistance, a path that varies from moment to moment and day to day because it is based upon the needs of learners. When required, great teachers offer refreshment, in the form of unrequited support, jokes or kind words to sustain their learners and open doors for their learning. When necessary, great teachers crash like a tidal wave, washing away inappropriate and hurtful behaviors or circumstances, cleaning the slate for new growth to occur."
Water simply shifts its shape and continues on its path, achieving its aims regardless of our response. If required, great teachers recognize and work their way through the cracks in learners' resistance to learning, building relationships and creating enthusiasm for learning where resistance and obstacles once stood. Teachers, like water, I find joy in sustaining others and helping them grow.
Be water, my friends, and all living things will seek you out for sustenance, rejuvenation, and inspiration.
Monsoons, let's live up to our name, BE WATER, FIND A WAY AND FINISH STRONG!
#bewater
Coffee with the Principal
My goal is to take an hour to facilitate connections and conversations that help our school community to work together to support Mayfair students in their learning and growth. There will be a theme each month to combine our efforts to help our students thrive at home and at school. The topic for this month will be "Finishing Strong: Closing out the School Year with Success." Please RSVP for this event. A virtual meeting will also be held on the same day for those who are unable to attend in person. We hope to see you at our next principal's coffee!

WASC: MAYFAIR'S VISIT SET FOR THIS FALL!
What is WASC?
WASC is the collaborative process that helps schools engage in continuous school improvement that focuses on high-quality learning and well-being for all students. WASC provides a process for regularly examining programs, processes, and data around school goals and student learning through data analysis, reflection, inquiry, and dialogue.
What is the importance of WASC?
WASC validates the integrity of the school’s program and transcripts. Without WASC accreditation, school transcripts may not be accepted by colleges.
What are some other benefits of WASC?
WASC builds a professional culture to support the schoolwide action plan and helps align the LCAP and School Site Plan
WASC mandates the Involvement of all stakeholders in the self-study process.
WASC ensures clarification of the school’s purpose and the schoolwide learner outcomes
The process helps all stakeholders better understand the variety of programs and services offered at the school
WASC encourages the school to celebrate success.
WASC can help districts and schools better allocate resources
What will the visiting committee be looking for?
The committee will be at Mayfair to verify our report. Our job is to be accurate, thorough, and concise in our report. The report should celebrate successes and point out areas in need of improvement. WASC is NOT a “gotcha” process. Mayfair is not expected to have all the answers as long as Mayfair is asking the right questions.
What happens after the committee leaves?
Mayfair will develop an action plan to address areas of need that aligns with the School Site Plan and the Local Control and Accountability Plan

CAASPP Testing to Continue
California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) System
Each year students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments and the CAST are online tests that measure what your student knows and is able to do, The tests include many different types of questions that allow students to interact with the test questions. Results help identify gaps in knowledge or skills early on so your child can get the support needed to be successful in school.
To learn more about the Smarter Balanced Summative Assessments or the CAST, go to the California Department of Education Parent Guides to Understanding Web page by simply clicking here.
You can also look at sample test questions on the practice tests, which can be found on the CAASPP Web portal by clicking here.

If there is a disciplinary action pending or in process, the phone will be returned to the student's parent/guardian or student at the conclusion of the process.
