District Update - Sept. 29

Superintendent's Message
As this is our first district newsletter since August, I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome our families and community to the 2023-24 school year! It is truly an exciting time to be a Middie, and we look forward to a successful and productive year together.
There are incredible opportunities that lie ahead for our district, and we are committed to making this school year one of action. With the substitute levy now in our rearview mirror (thanks to the unwavering support of our community), our staff and administration are ready to charge forward with a renewed sense of focus.
Certainly, there is plenty of work that lies ahead, but I am more than confident our team at Midview Local Schools will take each challenge and opportunity in stride for the betterment of our district, now and in the future. And that future, as our recent successes indicate, is very bright.
As a reminder, this monthly newsletter is full of great stories, important updates, and information about upcoming events. We encourage you to read each edition thoroughly so you stay up-to-date with all that is happening in Midview Local Schools.
We are ready for month number two! As always, please feel free to reach out to your building principal or any member of our district team if you have questions or concerns.
Take care,
Dr. Bruce Willingham

2023-24 State of the Schools Address
Earlier this month, Midview Local School District hosted local leaders and partners during our annual State of the Schools Address.
The State of the Schools Address focused on the status of the district, including past accomplishments, present news, and upcoming initiatives. More specifically, Dr. Willingham gave an update on the district’s performance on the 2021-22 Ohio School Report Card (the 22-23 Report Card was released the following week), the opportunities available to students, facilities and infrastructure, and the progress of Midview’s strategic plan, which includes the district’s vision, mission, and goals. Mike Resar, Midview Local School District’s treasurer, provided the district’s financial update.

Midview High School Students Make Difference Abroad
This summer, 27 Midview High School students, one Midview Middle School student, and four chaperones traveled abroad to Panama to participate in a service-based learning program. During the nine-day immersive experience, Midview students:
- lent a helping hand at Rural Panama School, spending three days improving sanitation infrastructure and making building updates (digging drainage ditches, using pickaxes to clear an area for a new classroom area, exterior and interior painting, mixing concrete by hand using shovels and pails of rock, sand, cement, and water) and two days working alongside dental health professionals (providing Fluoride treatments, teaching a dental health lesson in Spanish, packing hygiene kits with donations from the Grafton community and Global Brigades)
- learned about Panamanian culture through field trips and activities, including making tamales, Mola-inspired painting, crafting Soap Rock carvings, hiking, sightseeing, and Zumba
- practiced their foreign language skills, interacting with locals and the Panama Squads Abroad staff in Spanish
