Greetings, James Burd Families,

Spring has finally arrived and it is wonderful to see everything beginning to grow and bloom! We wrapped up March with our PBIS celebration by having artist Danny Kissel, come and share about his art and accomplishments. Mr. Kissel is a SASD alumni and shared how his perseverance and determination have helped him reach success and be featured on Halloween Wars and Best in Snow. It was wonderful to have the students see how you can accomplish anything you want with the right mindset.

Spring brings on many fun activities and field trips in April and May. If you want to participate in these events, make sure you have completed and submitted your clearances to the office.

April also brings us the PSSAs for our third grade students. Some information is listed below and additional information will be shared in the near future.

Great news! Shippensburg Area School District is partnering with the national nonprofit organization, YouthTruth, to help us gather feedback about what we are doing well, and how we can improve our school community to better serve our students. We will be conducting the anonymous survey for the students, staff, and parents of our SASD community in May. We look forward to your feedback. Let your voice be heard!

The Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) are scheduled to be administered later this month for all students in grades 3-8 across the state. For our third graders, we will be giving the tests following the schedule below:

• April 25, 26, and 27: ELA
• May 2 and 3: Math

In the upcoming weeks, parents of third grade students will receive additional information about the PSSAs. Please be on the lookout for this information.

After a hiatus, the SASD aquatics programs are opening back up. Please check out the attached flyer for more information on these opportunities.

There is valuable information available on the Food Service Page on the district website. You can find breakfast and lunch menus as well as information for Free & Reduced Meal Applications and Meal Payment information.

Vision and hearing screenings have been completed. If there was a concern with your child, a written notification would have come home with your child.

If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to Mrs. Merideth.

In Library, coming up next cycle students will be learning how to use reference materials to conduct research on different kinds of animals as well as famous people (biographies).

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is a process for identifying students who are experiencing behavior and/or academic difficulties which pose a barrier to their learning and success in schools. SAP offers supports to those students and their families. The core of the SAP team is group of faculty members who have received specialized training from the state of Pennsylvania. One of the most important tasks of the team is to build a partnership with families, focusing on the student's success as their common goal. Participation in this process is voluntary and is completely confidential.

James Burd Elementary utilizes School Dismissal Manager as a method for parents to update their plans for their child's dismissal. By 2:15, we would ask that any changes/updates be completed. We utilize this service to know what you want your child to do at dismissal. Please take time to download the app and establish your default preferences. If you need help, call Mrs. Diehl or Mrs. Pinckney in the office for assistance.

If you have not already, save the district calendar to ensure you're staying up to date with our scheduled days off as well as early dismissal days.
