Essential Practices
for Disciplinary Literacy in the Secondary Classroom
Regional One-Day Institute
This professional learning event will be open to instructional coaches, central office administrators, building administrators, and teacher leaders, as well as Intermediate School District Consultants, institutions of higher education, and professional organizations that support mathematics, science, social studies, and English language arts instruction across Michigan. Learning will be facilitated by lead researchers Dr. Elizabeth Moje and Dr. Darin Stockdill, along with Disciplinary Literacy Task Force members, to strengthen and bring coherence to the work occurring around literacy in secondary classrooms. Participants are encouraged to attend the institute at any of the locations listed below. Remote sites will be hosted at ISDs across the state to connect with the learning virtually and will be facilitated by Disciplinary Literacy Task Force members. Wayne RESA is honored to host the presenters in-person, allowing a uniquely interactive learning opportunity for all that attend.
During this one-day institute, participants will:
Generate an initial understanding and awareness of disciplinary literacy and the Disciplinary Literacy Essentials document
Expand understanding of research around adolescent literacy needs
Experience a compelling vision of what this might look like in the classroom
Consider implementation within current context
