Welcome to October! Picture day is happening on Wednesday, October 13. Conferences are Thursday, October 14. The end of the first quarter is Friday, October 15. In second quarter, we will continue working with numbers 6-10 and move to shapes. In language arts, we will work on retelling stories with fall books, and continue to focus on phonemic awareness, phonics, and handwriting. In cultural studies, most classrooms will begin to focus on North America, and trees, apples, and pumpkins. We are hoping to take Kindergarten students on a field trip to Blooms and Berries Farm Market in Loveland this fall… more details to come!

• The end of the 1st quarter is approaching, Friday, Oct. 15

• 2nd grade will begin testing next week (Thursday, Oct. 14) and 3rd grade will be testing the week after (week of Oct. 18)

• Ms. Allison Quinter, our school social worker, will support 6-9 classrooms with Social Emotional Learning Skills lessons

• In Cultural areas of studies, 6-9 students have been working on Fundamental Human needs, The study of the Solar System and Earth, Parts of Plants, Animal research and passage of time, Seasons related work.

• In Language students continue to work on parts of speech (nouns, articles, adjectives, verbs), writing mechanics appropriate to each grade level, and Reading Comprehension and analysis skills.

• Reminder for families to send laptops to school daily and charged.

• Headphones are always in high demand if families want to donate to your classrooms.

• We want to continue to encourage reading aloud and supporting your children with homework completion.

• 4/5 Math consists of 4th graders learning multi-digit addition and subtraction over the next few weeks, and 5th graders learning multi-digit multiplication and division over the next few weeks. We are all in slightly different places, but this is the focus content.

• ELA: 4/5 students continue to work with the Wit and Wisdom curriculum. 5th grade is learning about the complications of Westward Expansion through the novel Thunder Rolling in the Mountains, and 4th is exploring figurative and literal language through the novel Love That Dog. In 6th grade, our focus was on comparing and contrasting events in our book Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis. 6th grade students worked in groups to construct graphic organizers with details and then used those organizers to write a compare and contrast essay. We read chapters 17-19 and finished the book! Lastly, students participated in a modified Socratic Seminar.

• 6th grade math: We are continuing with decimal operations and using them in context. We are learning strategies for fraction operations. We will be learning when and how to use fractions in the real world. Exit tickets are due at the end of the quarter and students can redo them over and over again for full credit!

• In Science: 4/5 students are learning how creating a model of something can help us understand how things work. 4th graders investigated how the rain cycle puts water in our faucets. 5th grade is using a digital simulation model to understand how Earth spins to give us different night skies throughout the year. The sim model is a very useful tool to help our students grasp the big ideas that define space science. 4th grade challenged themselves to recreate a filter using different types of soil and sediment, mimicking how aquifers under the ground work. Students then voted for the cleanest aquifer model and we have two close winner groups who designed very effective models.

• In Social Studies, 4/5 classes have been practicing map skills and learning the names of US states. We have also just begun a new unit on the earliest Americans on this continent, exploring the Human Migration Theory.

• We have to send out a THANK YOU to our Blessings in a Bag Volunteers. With their help we are able to provide weekend bags to over 150 students.

• Whiz Kids will start on Monday, October 18, 2021 from 5:30-7:30pm at Crossroad Church in Oakley. Applications are in the school office. This is a first come first base sign-up. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to contact Monique Johnson.

• Thank you Lindsey who donated some much needed laundry detergent to the school. This has helped the school in a major way.

• In-Person and Virtual Tutoring is up and running for our students and it's off to a great start with the help of many of our volunteers within the community and from our local Colleges and University. If you are looking for tutoring services for your child, feel free to contact Jamie Donaldson here at the school.

• Vision Screening- Thursday October, 21 the nurse and nursing students from Xavier will be conducting our vision screening for our Kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th grader as well as any other students that may need to have their vision checked. More information to come.

• PRM Pink Out Friday is scheduled for Friday, October 29, 2021. Make sure you stay on the lookout for updates on this celebration.

• After-School Clubs and Groups are getting geared up for a fun and exciting school year. The leaders of the clubs/groups are getting ready to send out information and applications to students. Here is a list of current Clubs/Groups:
