CELEBRATIONS!
Great things are happening at WCS!
This Thursday we held our annual spring concert, featuring 4th & 5th grade, Beginning Band, as well as the Middle School Concert Band & Chorus. It was a night of beautiful music, and concert professionalism as students performed on stage. Thank you to the families who continue to support our young musicians. Finally, thank you to our music students for all of your hours of practicing. Your hard work and dedication made the evening magical!
ROYALTY DAY 6/2
NO SCHOOL: MONDAY, 5/29
There is no school on Monday, 5/29 as we observe Memorial Day. We pause to honor, and share our deep gratitude for the service and sacrifice of those in the military or armed forces who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

GUIDANCE NEWS
The Second Step Curriculum is quickly coming to an end. All of the students in grades PreK - Fifth grade have been working hard and practicing the four major skills of Second Step. The skills are: Skills for Learning, Empathy, Emotion Management, and Problem Solving. I have integrated many books to accompany each skill. The children have done an excellent job when describing each of the skills. They will continue with Second Step in their next school year.
Since Second Step is almost over, I have found several wonderful books to use and create thought provoking lessons for each grade level.
The book Just Ask! written by Sonia Sotomayor is what I am using for grades 2 - 5. It is a wonderful book. The theme of the book is empathy.
The Sneetches by Dr. Seuss is the book and lessons that I am using with grades Prek - first. The theme of the book is also empathy.
The book Rescue & Jessica by Jessica Kensky and Patrick Downes is the book and lessons I am using for grades 4 and 6. A true story, this book shows the major role dogs like Rescue play in the lives of people with disabilities. The theme is empathy.
Wishtree by Katherin Applegate is the book and lessons that I am using with the sixth grade students. This book addresses diversity and different perspectives. It also addresses empathy.
It's been a delightful school year working with your children. Thanks for the opportunity and the support. Have a wonderful summer.
On another note - I was very pleased to meet all of the upcoming Kindergarten parents last Thursday and Friday. It was so exciting to see how enthusiastic you were about your little ones coming to Kindergarten. The most thrilling thing I took away from those 2 days was that you all read to your child daily and that the children love playing outside. Keep it up! I wish you and your children the happiest times as you enter this new phase of life.

5th GRADE TO CHEWONKI
Thanks to our PTA and our great community, our 5th graders were able to visit Chewonki this week. The students spent the day completing team challenges in small groups. The challenges varied from students being led around in blindfolds to ropes courses requiring everyone to work together to problem solve as a team, (teamwork is a valuable skill for everyone to continue to develop in and out of school!) Each group also participated in an estuary study that connects to our Matter and Energy unit in Science. Some kids ended up in the mudflats to either find horseshoe crabs or to help pull a classmate back to shore, while others hit the estuary at a higher tide and explored other creatures. The day wrapped up with our leaders chasing the bus off campus while students waved their thanks. We are truly lucky to have this opportunity each year.
JUNE MENUS!
As always, menus can be found on the WCS website under Monthly Menu.

LINES FROM THE LIBRARY
We are still reading up a storm at WCS, but it’s time to start thinking about returning those library books. If you have any overdue books that have been checked out for a while, please get them back to the library. If you have a lost or damaged book, please take care of your bill by the first week of June. We will continue checking books out for the next several weeks, but all library materials must be returned on MONDAY, JUNE 12th.
WCS MIDDLE SCHOOL DANCE
PTA BOOK SWAP
Students are encouraged to bring their "gently used" books to school for donation to the WCS PTA Book Swap! There are collection bins outside of the library and in the school entryway. Students should tally how many books they bring in under their classroom teacher's name. The week of June 5th, students will be invited to choose out a different book to take home and the class that donates the most books will have first dibs at the book swap!
Currently Mrs. Babcock's 3rd grade is in the lead, followed in a close second by Mrs. Tracy's first grade.
Keep those books rolling in!
Books will be accepted up to Friday, June 2nd.
Please, no adult books, magazines or board books.
