Internationally Speaking, with Principal Bryant

Dear Silver Spring International Families,

Happy New Year! I hope the holiday season was restorative and enjoyable for you and your family.

Now that we are back to school, we are rounding the corner to the end of the first semester. The last day of the 2nd quarter is Thursday, January 26th. Please speak with your child now and encourage them to be proactive in submitting all work in a timely fashion and connecting with their teachers for make-up work as needed.

Inclement Weather

The Winter season typically brings a variety of inclement weather that may impact the normal operations of schools.

With the winter weather upon us, please remember to constantly check for school delays and closures. When the district announces there is a two hour delay, this means school busses and offices will begin 2 hours later than their regular time.

School delays and closures are also announced on all major English and Spanish radio and TV news stations in the area, as well as the main MCPS website, and our SSIMS Parent listserv email and connect ed emails.

NOTE for Caregivers who drive their children to school: The teacher duty day begins at 7:50 am which is the time the front doors are open to receive students. We encourage you to drop off your children at 7:50 am. Students who arrive to school earlier will be directed to around the building to access the cafeteria where they may enter, have breakfast, and wait until the building opens to access other parts of the school. This space is monitored by security.

Free Breakfast Reminder:

This year, breakfast is free to all SSIMS students. Students can access breakfast in the morning until 8:10 AM. The first instructional block begins each day at 8:15 am.

Cielo Rojo Fundraiser

Looking for an easy way to help out local students AND have fabulous Mexican cuisine? Well, we have your answer! On Wednesday January 11, 2023, Silver Spring International Spanish Immersion Students will be holding a fundraiser at CIELO ROJO located at 7056 Carroll Ave, Takoma Park, MD 20912. Cielo Rojo is a must try if you have not been, and was just highlighted by Eaters DC as one of the best dine-out places in the DC area.

Cielo Rojo is graciously donating 10% of sales from dining-in or take-out** orders to the SSIMS fundraiser. For the fundraiser to be successful, Cielo Rojo is requesting customers to do the following:

** Take out orders should only be done online through www.cielo-rojo.com.

Please DO NOT use third party vendors such as Doordash, Uber, etc as those sales will not count.
Please DO NOT call in your order over the phone as that ties up their staff

Cielo Rojo is encouraging lunch orders to help them spread sales throughout the day
No need to tell Cielo Rojo your order is for a fundraiser. All dine-in and take-out orders on that day will count.

Application to 2023-2024 Montgomery Virtual Academy Now Open

Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) is already planning for the start of the upcoming school year 2023 – 2024, including the Montgomery Virtual Academy (MVA). The primary focus of the MVA is to foster a safe, inclusive online learning environment that meets the individual needs of all students in an academic setting where staff know their students' interests, and want to see them excel as learners. The open application period will begin on January 5, 2023 and run through February 2, 2023. Please access the MVA Application Link to apply.
