CTE INDUSTRY CERTIFICATIONS
As we head into the holiday season and near the end of the first semester, 18 students enrolled in Computer Science Fundamentals and 11 students enrolled in the Computer Systems courses are tenaciously preparing to earn industry certifications.
Students in the Computer Science Foundations course have an opportunity to earn the IT Fundamentals+ certification from CompTIA which is an entry level certification acknowledging the recipient’s ability to identify and explain basic hardware, software, and networking concepts.
The Computer Systems students are working to earn the A+ certification from CompTIA. This level two certification reflects the recipient’s deeper understanding of hardware, software, and networking concepts; and how they all work together to create the computing systems we use in our day to day lives. They also learn to set up, install, configure, upgrade, and troubleshoot hardware and software.
Both certifications are industry recognized, respected, and something to be proud of earning. I am impressed with the effort put in so far and encourage them all to study hard these final weeks to make that final push toward certification.

The MHS Choirs also performed their annual Holiday Sacred Concert on December 3rd at New Providence Presbyterian Church. The concert opened with a processional of the students singing "He is Born" and "Lo, How a Rose" and concluded with the Maryville Chorale singing their annual performance of the songs "Candelight Carol" and "The Work of Christmas."
MHS Band is wrapping up marching season. Thanks to all the students and parent volunteers who make our season great!
MHS Theatre performed their fall play, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Nighttime, based on the novel of the same name on December 5th, 6th and 7th. Students always enjoy having an audience for all their hard work!
MHS Art had 21 students win awards and get into the Knoxville Museum of Art Regional Student Art Show. Award winners are eligible for $1M in scholarships to national art schools. The exhibition is on now from November 23rd to January 13th.
NEWS FROM THE SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
Maryville High School had two teams participating in this year’s East Tennessee PBS Scholar’s Bowl competition. The Maryville Red team, composed entirely of senior students, consisted of Eli Paszek (captain), Henry Astor, Connor Chamberlain, Caleb Fikes, Skylar Hewerdine, Stephen Qiu, and Megan Underwood. The Maryville Black team included Andrew Sanders (co-captain), Henry Chen (co-captain), Teddy Astor, Vivan Chen, Andre Miller, Alex Robertson, and Eli Stidham.
On October 25th, both teams competed in the first round of the competition. Team Red first defeated Alcoa High School with a score of 565 – 170. They then turned around and defeated Morristown East 530 – 215 in the second round. Team Black was then up against Morristown East’s 2nd team whom they defeated 425 – 155. The final match of the day saw Team Black go up against Grace Christian in their 2nd round which they lost in a close match.
On November 19th, the Maryville Red team returned to the PBS studios for their 3rd round match which just happened to be against Grace Christian, the team that beat Maryville Black and the 2nd place team overall in last year’s competition. The match was very close, and only a difference of three questions separated the teams at halftime. Unfortunately, Grace Christian pulled ahead in the last few minutes to take down the match and end the season for the MHS Scholar’s Bowl teams.
Overall, both teams did awesome, having practiced twice a week for several weeks prior to the competition. The team was coached by Dr. Corey DeHart and Dr. Amanda Kaeser, both teachers in the MHS science department.
NEWS FROM OUR PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT
We as a PE staff, are excited about the number of students improving their physical fitness through exercise & games. Our traditional PE classes completed their basketball season and tournament prior to Thanksgiving break. After returning, the students had the opportunity to choose activities on their own to participate in until winter break. Those activities are basketball, volleyball, 9-square, spike ball, and a walking program. The strength and conditioning classes are working hard on their individualized programs. Students are in the process of testing for their semester goals.
This semester has been wonderful as far as participation, accountability and work ethic!
