2025-2026 Budget Update
Dear Grafton Families and Community Members,
As you may be aware, the town is facing a significant budget deficit for FY26 and beyond. To address the anticipated $1.5 million shortfall for FY26, the schools presented a preliminary reduction plan on Tuesday evening. Unfortunately, this plan includes the elimination of 17.3 existing positions, along with three additional positions that would have helped maintain class sizes. For those who are interested in watching the meeting, I have included the link here:
School Committee 2-25-25 (The budget discussion starts at 14:45)
Where possible, we have leveraged retirements and known resignations to minimize job losses. However, despite our best efforts, the plan still necessitates the loss of 10 staff members.
While the challenges of FY26 are substantial, I am even more concerned about the projected reductions of another $1 million or more in FY27. If these reductions come to fruition, they will have an even greater impact on students and staff and could jeopardize our school choice funding—an essential financial lifeline for the past decade.
Over the next month, town leadership and various boards—including the School Committee, Select Board, and Finance Committee—will be actively reviewing these needs and determining the best course of action. I expect ongoing discussions in the coming weeks as they assess the situation and consider the best path forward for the town.

Student Spotlight: Santi Bagu
We’re excited to launch the first of what we hope will be many Student and Staff Spotlights in our district newsletter. These features are designed to celebrate the incredible individuals who make our school community special. Our interviewer for this series is Alex Inciong, a talented GHS senior who will be attending Brown University next year.
For our inaugural Student Spotlight, we’re thrilled to feature Santiago “Santi” Bagu, a 6th-grade student at North Street Elementary School. Santi currently serves as the 6th-grade class president, demonstrating strong leadership, a positive attitude, and a commitment to his peers. In his interview, Santi shares insights about his role, his favorite school experiences, and what inspires him both in and out of the classroom.
Stay tuned for more spotlights in future editions as we continue to showcase the voices, achievements, and stories of students and staff across our district!
Celebrating the 100th Day of School!
February 5th, marked the 100th day of school—a milestone filled with excitement across our elementary schools! Students were busy creating special projects to celebrate, showcasing their creativity with "100-themed" displays. Classrooms were decked out with festive decorations, and both students and staff joined in the fun by dressing up to mark the occasion. This joyful tradition is a wonderful way to reflect on all the learning and growth that has taken place so far this year. Here’s to the next 100 days of discovery and achievement!
Introducing the HOPE Program, and Sharing Family Resources
HOPE = Healthy Outcomes from Positive Experiences.
Developed and sponsored by Tufts Medical Center (Boston), the HOPE Program is supported by the Grafton Wellness Advisory Committee and the Worcester Department of Public Health. We are in the process of developing programs and activities that support HOPE.
The overall premise of the HOPE Program is that positive childhood experiences (PCEs) can reduce the impact of adverse or traumatic childhood experiences (ACEs), and therefore, it is highly important for all of us to contribute to positive childhood experiences to improve children's mental health now and in the future. PCEs can actually change the brain to reduce the brain-altering impact of traumatic experiences. Click here to access Tuft's HOPE Program site.

GMS Math Team Heads to State Championship!
The GMS Math Team showcased their exceptional talent, dedication, and problem-solving skills at a recent math competition held at Westborough High School on February 4th. Competing against eleven other middle schools from the region, the Grafton team delivered an outstanding performance, earning first place!
This impressive victory has secured the team a well-deserved spot in the state championship later this spring, where they will represent Grafton with pride and determination. The competition tested students’ abilities in various challenging mathematical concepts, requiring quick thinking, teamwork, and perseverance—all of which our students demonstrated with excellence.
A huge congratulations to the team and their coaches for this remarkable achievement. We are incredibly proud of your hard work and can’t wait to cheer you on at states!
Congratulations to our talented team members: Aashi Garg, Hridhaan Gautham, Ryan Gupta, Alex Kielbasinski, Anotida Masaka, Reema Ranjeet, Sathvik Sammishetty, Arjun Shinde, Harit Suraparaju, and Joelle Thomas.
