Quality learning for all in a caring community.

Dear Parents and Friends of our School Kia Ora/Hello/Kamusta
Kia ora koutou,
Lots of planning is well underway for all three of our school camps coming up this term. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes to plan our school camps and I thank all the teachers involved for the time and effort they put in to this. Equally we could not go ahead with our camps without the support and time many parents put in to assist before, during and after. It really is a team effort and we thank you for your support. We have an updated volunteer agreement form that all parents will be asked to read and sign. These will be handed out at the Year 3 & 4 camp and at the Year 5 & 6 and Year 7 & 8 parent camp meetings. We have linked it here for you to have a read.

Just a reminder about attendance expectations:
Attendance and engagement at school continues to be a major focus for the Ministry of Education (MOE). The MOE want all tamariki attending school 90% or more of the time.
The MOE have defined the following:
Any student who is attending less than 90% is considered an attendance concern.
Students who have an attendance rate between 80-90% are considered to be irregularly absent.
Students who have an attendance rate between 70-80% are considered to be moderately absent.
Students who have an attendance rate below 70% are considered to be chronically absent.
This is our summarised our school attendance data for Term 4:
Attending 90% or more of the time - 59%
Attending 80% - 90% of the time - 33%
Attending below 70% - 80% of the time - 6%
Attending below 70% of the time - 2%
The Ministry of Education have put in attendance targets for 2024:
Attending 90% or more of the time - 70%
Attending 80% - 90% of the time - 19%
Attending 70% - 80% of the time - 6%
Attending below 70% or less of the time - 5%
On your HERO App you can view your children's attendance summary. This is broken down into terms and shows justified and unjustified absences. Please have a look at see at what percentage your child sits at. If they are below 90% we would like to challenge you to make attending school 90% or more of the time a big focus for the rest of the year. That means missing no more than 5 days of school per term. If a child is sick, then goes on holiday, has a couple of farm days at home etc it soon adds up to a surprising amount of absences.

We require parent helpers for this great school fundraiser. This will involve selling or cooking food or helping with registrations. If you can lend some time to volunteer for this please email: office@toko.school.nz
We also have a few other things we need help with:
Does anyone have access or know how we can get a couple of power poles?
Who can help with a working bee closer to the trail bike ride to help build a bridge?
Does anyone have any walkie talkies we can use on the day?
Can someone donate a roast lamb cooked or uncooked?
If you can help with any of this please contact the school office.

SPORTS UPDATE
Toko School Tryathlon
On Wednesday 28th February we will be having our annual school tryathlon, beginning at 11.45am.
All children will assemble on the bottom field where they will be taken to the start line on Wawiri Rd and they will finish back on the field after the swim.
We run our event in the following order: Cycle, run, swim, run to the finish line.
The event order is as follows: Year 7 - 8, Year 5 - 6, Year 3 - 4, Year 0 - 2,
As in the past we will be utilising Waiwiri road for the cycle leg.
The children will be asked to remain with their classes until the whole event is completed - this is to encourage the children to support their house and stop the congestion in the bike area while people are still racing.
Please make sure that your child’s bike or scooter ( Year 0-2 only) is fully prepared for this event, checking that it is well serviced and that the brakes are in good working order. All children will be expected to wear a helmet, covered in shoes and swimming gear for this event. If your child does not have a bike to bring to school please contact your child's classroom teacher by the end of week 4 so we can make alternative arrangements.
Bikes/scooters will need to be dropped at school on the bottom field, Ahuroa Road entrance, on Wednesday morning. Gates will be open to assist you with this and Tracy O'Sullivan will be supervising. All bikes need to be collected after school. If this is a problem please contact your child's classroom teacher.
For children new to our school we have a very small course set up for our 5 year olds. It’s all about having a go and all Room 1 & 2 students will be supported by our senior students. If you have any further questions please talk to Miss Mancer or Mrs Oliver.
