EUSD App Update allows for Rooms Notifications
All communication from your child's teacher and the office will come through the EUSD App, specifically the Rooms part of the app. We do not want you to miss messages or photos so please update to the latest version of the EUSD app. This update allows guardians to turn on email notifications for messages and announcements! This is such an important update for improving communication from home and school. You will now get an alert when a message has been sent! To update the app, either delete and reinstall the app or just go to the app store, find the EUSD app, and click 'Update'. Then follow these Directions for turning on email notifications (link), See all Rooms documentation for families(link).
Candy or Shareable Items Safety Reminder
For safety, please refrain from bringing candy or shareable food items to school. Please help us out by checking your child’s backpack each day to be sure these items stay at home. If a student has candy or shareable items, staff will take possession of the items until the end of the day. Our EUSD wellness policy also does not allow for celebrating individual birthdays with food items either. The exception to this rule is preapproved class parties or events.

Peace Patrol Presents
Class Empathy Exercises
October has been a busy month for our North Broadway Broncos! Students participated in the national Red Ribbon Week campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Our Red Ribbon Week schedule included a variety of fun spirit days and engaging activities with the goal of educating our students about a healthy and drug-free lifestyle. Please click the picture below to see a video montage of photos from our week!
Our student leaders also had a time to shine in October during our Bullying Prevention Campaign. Our Peace Patrol members rotated through 2nd and 3rd grade classrooms to lead students in empathy exercises and teach steps to stop bullying at our school. They play an important part in modeling and promoting our culture of kindness and respect at North Broadway.
Please continue to follow our newsletters for more important and helpful information about the ways we implement PBIS at North Broadway!
Thank you parents and families for helping with the door decorating contest!!
Please come back next week to see the door decorating photos and to hear which door won!
Meet Mrs. Beth Zaletski, our Social Worker Intern
Beth Zaletski joins North Broadway this year as a Social Work intern working alongside our School Social Worker, Simone Haleftiras. She is a student in the first year of her Master’s of Social Work program at Cal State San Marcos. Beth is also the mother of three children, and the spouse of a retired Navy veteran. She is looking forward to getting to know the Bronco family and making a positive contribution to our campus while she's with us for the 2023-2024 school year.
EUSD Framework for the Future: Learner Profile
For November, we will be working on what it means for our Broncos to be an Ethical Scholar which is one of the six whole-learner outcomes that comprise the new EUSD Learner Profile in our visionary Framework for the Future.
As you may have heard in Dr. Ibarra's Family Communication, in October he observed our Broncos practicing being Empathetic Collaborators through their social-emotional learning lessons. In our new SEL curriculum, Second Step, students were learning about Goal Setting and Growth Mindset.
If you missed the message here is what Dr. Ibarra wrote: I had the pleasure of seeing an extraordinary demonstration of empathetic collaborators at work this week during a visit to North Broadway Elementary, where students not only are caring for their classroom community, they are learning to make their world a better place!
In 4th grade, teachers have been leading their students in discussions about their classroom community, to set goals or establish rules and expectations. Principal Cherry Moore told me that often the discussion is intended to guide students toward a behavioral goal, but sometimes the students come up with a behavior goal that is focused on how to do better in the world. Teacher Michael Tillyer followed that path, with his students choosing a goal that was bigger than themselves. “Their goal was to make 100 cards for patients at Rady Children’s Hospital,” Mr. Tillyer shared. “With Halloween, they realized that children who are sick and in the hospital won’t get to experience the holiday, and so they wanted to find a way to bring some joy.” His students were eager to share their hand-made cards with one-of-a-kind drawings and messages. These 4th-graders talk with such kindness and compassion toward their peers.
During this visit, it was also great to see North Broadway buzzing with parent volunteers, who were decorating doors for Red Ribbon Week and delivering orders from a fundraiser. I was also lucky to visit on an Elementary Enrichment Wheel day, with 1st-graders creating Van Gogh-esque sunflowers in one room while others learned dance moves in another. All while the 1st-grade teaching team was deep in collaboration with ELA coach Amy Copeland, going over data and exchanging their experiences on what’s working for their students when it comes to improving reading fluency. Adults can be empathetic collaborators too!
As we focus on these whole learner outcomes we are seeing our students transform. One teacher shared an experience she had with one of her empowered learners. "One of my students was interested in doing science experiments, so he found an experiment using baking soda and vinegar and did it at home. He was excited by what he learned and wanted to share it at school so he wrote up the instructions and brought them to me. I purchased the supplies for the class and we arranged a date for him to teach the class. He demonstrated the experiment and taught the class why the chemical reaction happens. Then the whole class made their mini volcanoes in the Secret Garden and watched them overflow. It was really neat to see him feel empowered to share his knowledge. He shared he enjoyed the feeling of teaching his friends." He loves science and this is a true example of an Empowered Learner!
