Greetings Waikīkī School Families!
I'm Dr. Toby Yos. I've previously served in Waikīkī School's counseling department and am currently a faculty member at the University of Hawai‘i Uehiro Academy for Philosophy and Ethics in Education (home of p4c Hawai‘i).
Working in partnership with the school, this year I’m happy to be able to offer two additional p4c outreach groups to Waikīkī School students and parents.
p4c (philosophy for children) Outreach Group for Grade 3-5 Waikīkī School Students
p4p (philosophy for parents): p4c Leadership Group for Parents of Waikīkī School Students
Waikīkī School has long been an international model school for Philosophy for Children (p4c). p4c creates intellectually safe communities of inquiry where children can come together, learn from each other, and grow into empathetic and skillful thinkers. Learn more about p4c at https://p4chawaii.org
p4c Outreach Group for Grade 3-5 Waikīkī School Students: This group is designed for Grade 3-5 students who love doing p4c, who would like to have an extra time to do p4c and to sharpen their skills, and who would like to belong to an additional supportive p4c community. This group is also a good entry point for students who might, in the future, like to be a part of our advanced Middle School and p4c Demonstration groups.
Our regular meeting time will be from 4-5 pm on Tuesdays. This meeting will take place on Zoom.
As COVID conditions allow, we hope to add in-person p4c sessions. These sessions will take place at the school during lunch and/or recess time.
I do not keep track of attendance, but regular attendance is expected. It is hard to build a p4c community if people don’t show up. This being said, if a student only comes to the in-person sessions, that’s OK. I recognize that some students just don’t like Zoom p4c.
Any Grade 3-5 student is welcome to join. Students don’t have to be super talkative. They just have to be good listeners who enjoy doing p4c.
Parents, if your child would like to join this group, please fill out this p4c Outreach Group for Students Registration Form. I will then send you the parental consent forms and additional information.
p4p (philosophy for parents): p4c Leadership Group for Parents of Waikīkī School Students: This group is designed for the parents of Grade K-5 Waikīkī School students. The aim of this group is to create an intellectually safe community where parents can think together, support one another, talk about their wonderings, and learn how to do p4c.
Our regular meeting time will be from 12 noon to 1 pm on Fridays. This meeting will take place on Zoom.
Group members will be given access to a collection of audio recorded talks and “how-to” videos that will teach them about p4c. Our aim will be to get you familiar with p4c and to prepare you to do p4c at your family dinner table or in some other setting.
Half of the weekly sessions will be dedicated to reflecting on the p4c materials. The other half of the sessions will be devoted to simply supporting one another and talking about whatever is on people’s minds.
Any parent of a Waikīkī School student is welcome to join this group. This includes those parents who have participated in other p4p groups. This will be a non-judgmental and supportive space where people can connect and enjoy meaningful conversation. Regular attendance is appreciated.
Parents, if you would like to join this group, please fill out this p4p: p4c Leadership Group for Parents Registration Form. After receiving this Registration Form, I will then send you the consent forms and additional information.
Informational Meeting: Want to learn more before you register? If you have questions about either group, I will host a short informational meeting on Friday, October 29. This Zoom meeting will start at 5:30 p.m. Below is the meeting link. Click on it to join.
