SHES Weekly Update

Dear Shadow Hills Families,

I hope everyone is enjoying another three-day weekend. I saw many trailers heading out on Friday. I'm looking forward to hearing about all the adventures you and your child had this Tuesday. In honor of President's Day, we have no school on Monday, February 20.

This past week started with so much love and joy while celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday. We then transitioned back into final assessments for Trimester 2 and CAASPP prep. We have noticed that our attendance rates are decreasing more than average. It is imperative for your child to attend school, especially in a dual language program. Daily attendance equals exposure to language-rich environments, which helps students improve skills in reading, writing, and daily communication. If your child is absent, please email or call the school to report their absence. If your child is absent for three days or more, please ask for an Independent Study Contract that will count as attendance while your child is out. Here at school, we have been very busy learning about kindness - what it means, and how we can practice it! Learning happens best when it is done both at school and at home. Below are many ways that you can help you child continue to learn about the theme of kindness through reading about it, talking about it, and practicing it! We have really enjoyed exploring this topic at school, and I hope your family will enjoy it just as much!

Practice It!

Spend time writing encouraging notes to people in your community. This could be neighbors, policeman, teachers, nursing home residents, firefighters, anyone! Have your child go with you to deliver your notes of kindness!

Talk About It!

Here are some discussion points to help you talk about courage with your child:

• Tell me about a time when someone was kind to you. How did it make you feel?
• What do you think kindness means and why is it important?
• Who is someone in your class you can be kind to?
• What are ways you can be kind to people at home, at school and in the community?

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We want to hear about your experience with your student's education. Therefore, we invite you to participate in completing the School Climate Survey. This survey includes questions about your child's learning, school safety, and interpersonal relationships, your attitudes about the institutional environment, and your involvement in school. Your responses will be beneficial in improving student relationships, learning conditions, and the overall school environment.

Beginning today, February 19, 2023, we invite all parents, guardians, and caretakers to complete this survey for our school. The survey is anonymous and brief; it contains 21 questions and takes about 10-15 minutes to complete. All your responses are completely anonymous. We cannot connect you to your answers, and results will only be reported as group responses. There are no right or wrong answers. We want to know about your personal experiences. Responses are housed securely in an anonymous format with the University of Oregon Technical Assistance Center projects for evaluation research purposes. All evaluation research projects comply with the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (343 CFR 99.31 (6)) and human subjects regulations (Protection of Human Subjects 45 CFR 46).

As you respond to each item, think about your personal experiences as a parent, caregiver, or guardian at your child's school. Please answer all the questions, or your answers won't be recorded, but you can mark "I prefer not to answer" if you don't want to answer a question about yourself.

If you cannot access this online survey, please pick up a paper copy in your school office, complete it, and leave it in the designated box. Then, please submit your responses by Friday, March 3, 2023.

We hope you will provide us with this valuable information. Feel free to call our office at (619) 445-2977 if you have any questions. Each school's total survey results will be used to inform and develop appropriate strategies, procedures, and programs to enhance our school climate.

The School Climate Survey is an anonymous survey used to identify school climate issues within our school. The survey for elementary school students includes 16 questions and should take no more than 10–15 minutes to complete. While the survey is anonymous, parents/guardians can have their child not participate and opt out if desired by completing the form below. The data collected from the survey will be used to identify student perceptions of school climate issues within our school. In addition, school staff will use the results to inform our efforts at improving our school climate. We desire to involve parents in their children’s education. If you do not wish for your child to participate in this critical activity, please sign and return this form to the school by Friday, February 24, 2023. Click the button below for a list of questions your student will be asked to complete anonymously.

The Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP) is a component of the Local Control Funding Formula (LCFF). The LCAP is intended to be a three-year plan to improve student achievement by setting annual goals. Each of the priorities has established data requirements to track district progress improving student achievement. The LCAP requires Districts to gather input from students, teachers, parents, and community members to determine the goals, actions, and budget priorities for the District.

• Goal #1: Effective Instruction and Curriculum - Provide equitable access to high-quality classroom curriculum and instruction in an inclusive environment that promotes student success.
  
• Goal #2: Safe and Respectful Environments - Ensure all school sites are safe and have healthy and welcoming climates for staff, students, and their families so that all students feel connected and are motivated to attend and ready to learn.
• Goal #3: Equitable and Culturally Responsible Systems - Ensure systems and processes eliminate barriers to student success and are equitable and culturally responsive to the needs of our students and their families.

• Water bottles - It is extremely important that your child brings a water bottle to school DAILY. We do have multiple water bottling filling stations on-site to refill their bottles.
