Curriculum Corner
Hello Oak Grove Community,
The PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of College & Career Readiness) testing started today for grades 6 – 8. Next week, we will be testing grades 3 - 5. The make-up window for all grades will be the week of April 24th-28th.
During this time, it will be necessary for all students in grades 3 through 8 to have working headphones at school. Portions of the assessment will require students to listen to information and craft a response. If your child does not have working headphones at school, please ensure that your child has a pair for the testing window. Remember to bring all devices fully charged and ready to test.

Over the 5-day class, the students will learn:
The process of creating a music video and the various associated jobs
Storyboard creation
The basics of video/audio recording and editing
Greenscreen techniques & multi-cam editing
Costs for the class will be $50 for each student. Class size is currently limited to 30 participants. Priority will go to those families who have paid through RevTrak. Parents, please visit this link to access RevTrak (https://goo.gl/IwtaCU). We also ask that interested students will fill-out this “Class interest survey” so we can can start collecting materials. PTO Spring Assembly
Hello Oak Grove parents and/or guardians,
The PTO will be bringing Hot Ground Gym to Oak Grove School on Tuesday, May 16th for the PTO’s spring assembly. Hot Ground Gym is a local company that focuses on teamwork, leadership and critical thinking through obstacle course fitness. It was founded by two military veterans, who have a goal to teach children how to grow physically, while building character. Their work is founded on five pillars: teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, obstacle course fitness and discipline.
Please, visit their website here for additional information.
Hot Ground Gym will be creating obstacle course fitness sessions for each grade level during P.E. classes on Tuesday, May 16th. Students should be dressed in comfortable clothes to participate, with gym shoes. Students in grades 6-8, will not be changing into P.E. uniforms for the day, so students should dress appropriately to participate. This event will be outside, depending on the weather for May 16th.
In order for your child(ren) to participate, please fill out the form below:
If you have multiple children at Oak Grove, you will be able to list up to 3 students within one form. Children will not be able to participate unless the above form has been completed. If you would prefer for your child to not participate, please contact Michelle Jackson at jackson@ogschool.org and students will participate in regular P.E. class on May 16th.
Please, submit the form by Friday, May 5th.
Thank you to Oak Grove’s PTO for bringing this spring assembly to Oak Grove students.

Please, join us as the TAG committee hosts Dr. Michele Kane!
Oak Grove School
Thursday, May 4th, 2017
6:30 pm - 7:30 p.m.
Hosted by the OGS TAG Committee
We are excited to welcome back Dr. Michele Kane!
Dr. Kane joined us last year to present to parents on fostering the social and emotional well-being of gifted children, in order to encourage healthy relationships.
This year, Dr. Kane’s presentation will focus on recognizing that gifted children are exquisitely sensitive to their own inner world and that of others. Intuitively aware, they may feel the pain of the world. It can be overwhelming to understand the magnitude of the world’s ills and feel unable to respond meaningfully. Dr. Kane will discuss how children need assistance from caring adults to develop a healthy repertoire of responses which cultivates emotional courage. There is a growing body of research on gratitude, compassion, optimism, and mindfulness that fosters emotional development and that provides a pathway from empathy to action that Dr. Kane will share with parents.
Michele Kane, Ed.D. is a Professor of Special Education at Northeastern Illinois University in Chicago, where she coordinates the Master of Arts in Gifted Education Program. She has served the gifted community as a public school district gifted coordinator; through private programs such as Camp Summit for the Gifted, PG Retreat, and SENG; and in leadership positions within both the Illinois and National Associations for Gifted Children.
Please see the flyer in the Virtual Backpack for more information and how to register.
Please, sign up by Monday, May 1st.
