Broad Run High School's Monthly Newsletter: Feb 2024
Principal's Message
It's mid-February, and we have started our course selection process for rising 9th through 12th graders. You can find detailed information here. This information will be updated throughout the spring, so please check it frequently and reach out to your school counselor with any questions. We ask that all students have their course selections complete by the end of March and any adjustments requested by May. Our goal is to have student select courses that fit their graduation plan, challenge them with academic rigor (especially in areas of interest), and build a master schedule that fits all students and faculty.
Spring sports tryouts begin February 19. This is our busiest season. Reminder to everyone to make sure your athletic paperwork is turned in and hope to see you at a spring event!
Juniors will take the required SOL Writing test on March 13 and 14. We will have an alternate bell schedule these days to allow for uninterrupted time for this graduation requirement. Testing information can be found here.
Seniors have been presented A LOT of information. From the Senior Packet, Project Graduation, or Capstone. It all can be found here.
Finally, in March or April, we will be conducting lessons related to Digital Citizenship through a program called Common Sense Media. Our focus will be to heighten our students’ awareness of their digital footprint. I encourage parents to also speak with your student about their social media presence, and their digital footprint.
Thank you again for all your support,
David Spage, Principal

Important Feedback Survey Information
We need to hear from you!
The LCPS Annual Family Survey will be emailed to you on February 20. The LCPS Annual Staff, Student and Family Survey is the most extensive and influential feedback survey conducted by Loudoun County Public Schools each year. We use the results to assess the learning climate in our building and make plans for the following year. We want to hear from everyone, so that we can make the best decisions for ALL our students!
The parent/family survey will only take a few minutes of your time. You will receive an email from Dr. Aaron Spence that will include a link to take the survey. You will be asked to fill out a survey for each school in which you have a child enrolled (elementary, middle, high or program). For more information, go to the Stakeholder Surveys 2024 Information webpage
If you do not receive a survey email by February 22, contact research@lcps.org.
Thank you for sharing your opinion with us!
News from the Coach Costello Foundation
Hello Spartans!
This past year has been difficult for our Spartan faculty as we continue to mourn the losses of Coach Costello, Coach Steele, and now Ms. Habibi. We hope this update can help spread some happiness. All three of these great people leave behind a legacy we would all be proud to call our own. With respect to that idea:
This weekend, we officially launched the Coach Costello Foundation. Coach Cos made such an incredible impact on every person he came into contact with and we want to keep that tradition going. The goals of this foundation are three-fold:
- Run an annual golf outing to bring together Costello's friends and family
- Fund the 6 LCPS Coach Costello Field Days
- Expand the Coach Costello Field Days to other schools, counties, and states
The Coach Costello Foundation is a labor of love by Coach's former students, family members, and friends. Please help share our COS with your friends and family. There are opportunities to donate, buy shirts, learn more about the COS's, as well as sign up for the golf outing!
Golf registration is now OPEN! Do not wait to sign up! It will sell out quickly! Also, if you know anyone who would like to sponsor a hole, please let me know. We have business sponsorships as well as individual family sponsorships. All money raised goes towards the Costello Field Day!
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, you want to learn about golf, or if you have wealthy friends who want to help get a non-profit off the ground with a hefty donation!

Information about the foundation and the golf outing can be found here:
English Department Teacher Receives Honors--Fiction Collection Ready for Pre-Order
Broad Run’s own Beth Konkoski was the winner of the 2023 Acadia Prize for Short Fiction and now has her collection available for preorder. See a description and details below!
Characters practiced in the arts of grief and disappointment live in the stories of Beth Konkoski’s collection, A Drawn and Papered Heart. From a young boy facing death at the hands of a troubled relative to a woman who must bail her friend out of jail in the middle of the night, these lyrical stories evoke for readers bittersweet reminders of the many ways to journey toward resilience.

AP Course in African American History Available for the 24-25 School Year
We are introducing a brand-new AP this fall at Broad Run - AP African American History. Students will explore various themes such as African explorers, trace music back to Africa, go on field trips and so much more! Rising juniors and seniors are eligible for this class! If you want to learn about African History but not take an AP class just yet, then I recommend the Survey of African History & Diaspora Honors class. This is a project based elective and we will have meaningful discussions throughout the year with guest speakers. We will also visit the National Museum of African American History & Culture. Email Ms. Abdalla with any questions Mahlet.Abdalla@lcps.org.
