Encouraging Positive Behaviors at Home
SPED Social Worker: Thelma Padilla
Supporting positive behaviors for some children can be challenging. Each child’s needs and abilities are different, therefore the adult’s approach must take these needs into consideration. Schools implement a model that supports all students while considering the unique needs of individual students. This model, Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports, or PBIS is a three (3) tiered framework of support. Tiers include universal prevention (for all students), targeted prevention (for a smaller group of students) and a more focused support with intensive or individualized prevention (for specific students). These supports have proven to improve behaviors and increase student academic performance.
What some parents and guardians may not be aware of is that the PBIS model can be implemented at home. Parents and guardians can develop a Family Plan for Positive Behavior at Home that focuses on their family’s priorities and unique needs. You may find some resources on implementing PBIS at Home by following this link.
In January, a pilot parent group focusing on the PBIS model at home was launched virtually by the Disability Services Social Workers. The 6 week group provides SAISD parents/guardians of children receiving Special Education services the tools to implement the PBIS framework at home while offering parents a safe space to share their experiences and receive support from licensed professionals. Based on the level of interest, additional groups will form after Spring Break. If you are interested in participating in the PBIS Support Group please complete this form, you will be contacted by staff to confirm the formation of the group.
