A Message from the Administrative Team
Greenwood Students and Families:
As reported in the media, Missouri State changed their policy for instructional delivery if a school closure were to occur. When the university is closed due to an emergency or inclement weather situation, MSU classes will move to remote learning. Greenwood students (other than those who are taking MSU courses) will NOT have remote learning. Obviously if the closure becomes extended, such as it did during the pandemic, Greenwood will offer virtual instruction. What has not changed is the closure protocol for Greenwood: If Missouri State closes for inclement weather and has virtual instruction instead, Greenwood will be closed. If Missouri State opts for a late start, Greenwood will close for the entire day. Notifications from Greenwood will come to families via email, text, and social media.
We are gearing up and making plans for fall 2024-25. If your family is planning NOT to return to Greenwood for whatever reason, we would like you to notify the administration as soon as possible. This simply helps us in filling spots for the new school year. In addition, if you plan to apply for financial assistance through FACTS https://factsmgt.com/ please do so by March 1, 2024. Tuition and some fees will increase for the 2024-25 school year. Soon, the counselors will be asking students to select courses next year, please meet the deadline to return this form. We hope to process contracts for 2024-25 during Spring Break and have them to families thereafter.
This is a reminder that students are not to receive food deliveries from outside vendors except on Fridays. They are not allowed to order food during class and will not be allowed to leave class to pick up food. Thank you for your support, as always, students are welcome to eat in the lunchroom, or if they are in high school, they may eat on campus.
Next week we are hosting our Kindergarten Open House for prospective students on Wednesday, January 24th at 6pm. The meeting will start in the cafeteria and include a tour and classroom presentation.
The start of the 2nd semester provides a good opportunity to reflect and provide feedback. We would like for each parent to visit: https://eprovesurveys.advanc-ed.org/surveys/#/action/245195/7222 and participate in a short survey. This survey has been used in the past and the data informs leadership about areas for improvement. In addition, this data is utilized for our upcoming accreditation visit next school year. Thank you in advance for your participation.
The third annual Greenwood Showcase will occur on Thursday, March 21 (tentatively). This event will “showcase” student projects, performances, and fine art displays as a way to celebrate the talented students at Greenwood. More information will be forthcoming.
After 42 years in education and 30 impactful years at Greenwood, Kathy Gibson is retiring at the end of the school year. Ms. Gibson has been a valued member of our staff and has made countless impressions on students. Teaching in the Communication Arts department, Ms. Gibson has pioneered programs and traditions over the years that have helped with the continual academic, and overall, development of our students. Ms. Gibson will be missed on a daily basis, please join us in congratulating her on a tremendous career and her various accomplishments.

First Graders Learn About Chinese New Year
Dr. Lawrence Yang, Daniel’s dad, visited first graders this week. Tuesday, Dr. Yang talked about Daniel and gave skiing tips to the first graders to celebrate Daniel being student of the week. On Thursday, Dr. Yang and Daniel shared about Chinese New Year. Students learned about customs associated with Chinese New Year, such as wearing red for good luck and respect of elders. The Chinese New Year observance traditionally begins on the evening before the first day of the year and culminates with the Lantern Festival held on the 15th day of the year. The Chinese calendar identifies the lunisolar month as the eleventh month and falls on the second new moon after winter solstice. Chinese New Year is an important holiday where you spend time with family and celebrate.

From the Counselors
The spring semester brings into focus a few things for our secondary students that Mrs. Ewing will spotlight in the next few newsletters. These topics include next year scheduling, summer enrichment & leadership programs for all grades, and scholarship opportunities for seniors.
NEXT YEAR SCHEDULING: Mrs. Ewing will present next year scheduling information to our sixth through eleventh graders beginning mid-February. Presentations will be delivered to 6th - 11th graders during one of their classes. A presentation schedule will be arranged soon. Students will receive directions and information for selecting their courses for the 2024-2025 school year. They will bring home a Selection of Studies form to be reviewed, approved, and signed by parents. These forms will be returned to Mrs. Ewing by March 4. Mrs. Ewing will also offer a zoom informational session for parents. Next year scheduling updates will be offered in future newsletters as we progress in the master scheduling process led by Dr. Snodgrass and Mrs. Hopkins.
SUMMER OPPORTUNITIES: Various summer enrichment & leadership programs are offered in Missouri and across the nation. Participating in these programs provides students with invaluable curriculum enhancement, leadership experience, and contributes to the strength of college applications.
Mrs. Ewing will send out notices as she learns of any summer program opportunities. You may also check out various programs listed on the Counseling page of the Greenwood website. Counseling Department | Greenwood Laboratory School (missouristate.edu). You will also find other opportunities through your own research and networking. Mini-Med School - High School Mini-Med School at the University of Missouri Columbia is returning this June for two sessions. Session 1 runs from June 2-6 and Session 2 is from June 9-13. This overnight camp is for Missouri high school rising seniors who are interested in a career in medicine. Students will attend lectures and will participate in the same Patient Based Learning (PBL) curriculum that Mizzou medical students do with hands-on clinical experiences, simulation and anatomy centers, and social events in the evenings. This is a great experience for anyone who is considering medical school after college.
The cost for this camp is $650 which includes all the camp fees, lodging, camp deposit of $50 and meals. The application is free and there are scholarships available. The application opened January 12 and is due March 17, along with a transcript and a letter of recommendation from a past or current science teacher. For more information about the camp and the application visit: https://medicine.missouri.edu/offices-programs/education/pre-med-outreach-programs/mini-medical-school.
SCHOLARSHIPS: In addition to the scholarship information posted on the website’s Counseling page, Mrs. Ewing will highlight specific scholarship program details in future newsletters. She will also provide this information to seniors through Senior Capstone. Today’s focus will be on two scholarship programs:
1. COMMUNITY FOUNDATION OF THE OZARKS (Various Scholarships) –
CFO’s scholarship season is open, as of Jan 1! The application deadline is March 24. Seniors should use their personal email to set up an account. CFO has moved to a Universal Application process allowing students to apply for all CFO scholarships for which they qualify through one comprehensive application.
Students will create an account and answer several eligibility questions in the UA. Based on their answers, they will receive a confirmation page which will list the scholarship opportunities that they were found eligible to be considered for. Some scholarship opportunities will require answers to supplemental questions.
Specific criteria information can be found on the “Scholarship Criteria Preview” page on CFO’s website: https://www.cfozarks.org/resources/scholarship-criteria. See step by step instructions on the following pdf: “How to Apply for Scholarships” How to Apply for Scholarships.pdf
