Tech this out!
April 2021
In this newsletter:
- Shut it down
- Shifting students suggestions
- Safe practices with KnowBe4
- Spam and Phishing (not to be confused with fishing with spam--- ew)
- Some eduprotocols (Okay, just one, but I needed an S word...)

This is. An important. Announcement.
It may solve so many of the issues you might not see coming. I'm sure many of you have asked them to do it while teaching remotely. And I'm sure they all have (the jr. high teacher in me knows that's a lie). So, just start one day with a shut down and restart.
Chromebook teachers--- might want to have the Google passwords handy, just in case... forgot how? Check this out!
While we're at it... what about you? Have you shut down your devices (laptop? ipad? phone?) Iately? It is a good idea!

Welcome to the current version of the new normal!
For one thing, I know there have been some student shifts in the last few weeks.
A couple friendly reminders
Account automation occurs overnight after their first day on the roster.
That means, day 1, a student's account won't work. Day 2 will be the first day it will be activated.
Occasionally, a student has left the district and returned and their account doesn't reactivate for day 2. If this happens, please put in a tech support ticket with the student information. We are keeping our eyes out for that so we can address it in a speedy quick manner, and I know there were some unexpected snags last week that got resolved as quick as we could. (they could, really, I am not part of the we who can fix stuff, it's true. But they? The rest of the tech dept? Pretty fantastic!)
Remember--- ticket is better than email. Submit a ticket.
Remove students who aren't on your roster anymore
TK-2--- go to the wrench menu in Seesaw and remove past students. That way they won't continue to show on your student list and they won't see your class and assignments. If you are H@H and have a custom class set up, put in a ticket. Otherwise, I think you can do it yourself.

The Human Firewall!
Many of you have already completed the April KnowBe4 module, but if you haven't-- or it you have started but need to finish, I want you to know it is for you! Everyone who has an email account should complete the monthly module, and it is fine to use work time to do it. If you work with a para, ask them if they have completed it yet.
I feel empowered learning about things like social engineering and how the "bad actors" are pretty crafty, and I hope you do, too! It makes me happy that we can offer these learning opportunities to everyone on Team Hueneme-- it is learning that improves us all, professionally and personally.
You don't need a special log in link, that is just a convenience in the email. You can go to knowbe4.com and log in in the top right. Or use this link: https://training.knowbe4.com/ui/login
For those who haven't started yet, here is a quick video to show what signing in looks like, and also how to change the language. Feel free to share it with people who may not read the newsletter.
(I mean, I can't imagine who that might be, I'm just guessing....)

Spam and Phishing! Two types of emails we don't want. What can we do in Gmail?
If you are thinking "What in the world, Liz, I don't even know what you are talking about?" Gotcha! You haven't done the module!
See above and do the quick April module. It includes an explanation of the Phish Alert Button (They just call it the PAB sometimes because it makes it seem more cool, I think. Be like the cool kids. Call it the PAB, yo. )
I'm going to send a practice email soon so you can make sure the button is available.

May I share an Eduprotocol idea this month?
Are you finding, now that students are back in the classroom, they are sitting in rows not talking, but spending plenty of time working on their computers? If that is the groove you are in, can I suggest an eduprotocol to mix it up just a little?
BookaKucha is a fun lesson the get students talking about what they are reading. Sort of like a book report, but they don't have to be done with the book, and you choose the skill you want them to practice. Working on character traits? Theme? Show not tell? Put that in the Bookacucha slide they will complete, then talk about.
I know getting back in the classroom is coming with limitations on movement etc, but Eduprotocols are a way to plan lessons that are safely interactive and engaging.
Here is the page explaining BookaKucha. Let me know if you try it out!

Students in unmonitored Google Meets? No thanks!
Just a reminder---- DELETING the calendar EVENT does not keep students from using the Meet link later. Please don't delete the event and think it is handled. It isn't. You need to turn off Quick Access.

Website Update
You have probably already found the nifty Q link at the top and the student links button on the photo gallery. I will remove student links from the menu at the end of the month, so show your students. If you need a graphic to share, THIS IS A GOOGLE FOLDER with an image for every school. Download yours and add it to a Google Classroom assignment or a make a Seesaw announcement.
Can I mention one more thing? Please, don't suggest that everything should be a button on the frontpage. The buttons are groovy, yeah baby, but we do not want to make it seem like the only place to look on our website must be a button. That isn't how webpages are supposed to work.

Got Chromebooks? Get Securly!
I'm gonna tell you, Securly is pretty nicel! A lot of teachers have been using it and liking it.
Here's what I submit to you--- there may be features you aren't aware of that can help you! If you are just looking at screens to monitor tabs, and only know about it because a friend told you--- you should educate yourself real quick!
The best way to learn about it? COAST!
- There is a specific mission for Securly. CLICK HERE for the first task then go to Dashboard at the top and find the Securly mission in the Wax Your Surfboard Level 1.
- Explanation, steps and videos will show you how to use all the features . Choose what you want to start with.
Go get some points, learn some new stuff, and be a better teacher because of it!

Have a great week, whatever week you read this!
