Weekly Update

June 9th, 2023
Dear Brunswick High School Community,
Brunswick High School’s 2022-2023 Final Exams will take place June 9 – June 15 (daily schedule below). Exams will be administered to all students in grades 9-11. During finals week, teachers will provide a final exam (essay, multiple choice, etc.) or final experience (project, performance, etc.). The specific assessment format will be determined by the classroom teacher. Final course grades along with other data will help guidance counselors and administrators identify students who could benefit from additional time over the summer to complete and pass their course(s). Here are some additional important details about final exam week:
Prior to exam day, teachers will review with each class all material that will be assessed on the final exam.
Teachers will provide a final exam review sheet for each course.
Teachers will review with their class how the final exam impacts the final course grade.
Students are required to attend school only when they have an exam.
Bus transportation will be provided in the morning and at 11:30 a.m. when students are dismissed each day. A student may leave prior to 11:30 a.m. dismissal with parent permission. Please have your student drop off a parental note at the main office in the morning. The afternoon bus will depart at 2:15.
The cafeteria and library will be open for quiet study and for students awaiting dismissal.
Region 10 classes will not take place during final exams.
Snacks are available during break time and a bag lunch upon dismissal.
Ms. Vogel and Ms. Kunhardt will lead stress management activities like playdough, games, coloring and walks with Elmer (our therapy dog) in the cafeteria.
The final exam/experience will take place during the period scheduled for that class. If a student has an excused absence for the appointed exam period, please contact the teacher via phone or e-mail to reschedule.

This summer program provides flexibility for students who may have summer jobs or other commitments and will run from June 26th - July 20th. Participating students will have an opportunity to borrow a laptop from the district if needed. We hope students who qualify take advantage of the Summer Credit Recovery Program.

Happy end of the year!
Lots to cover in this one!
Students are nearly done with all of their school work–all that’s left are final exams. For some students, final exam preparation isn’t very stressful, but for others, this can be one of the toughest parts of their school year! Teachers have done a great job helping them prepare for their exams academically. As parents and guardians you can help prepare them mentally and emotionally! Here are some tips to help you support your student during exam week:
When possible, avoid adding stressors that can wait until after the exams are over
Offer encouragement and encourage positive self-talk–if you hear your student saying things like “I can’t do this” or “I’m going to fail,” validate that they are feeling stressed or overwhelmed and remind them they are capable!
Try not to overemphasize the importance of the exam
Study with them or just be near them to offer support when they need it
Encourage breaks while studying and getting good rest at night
Encourage them to eat balanced meals
Try and help them have a smooth morning before leaving for the test–some ideas: set alarms, set out breakfast, snacks and water, leave a little encouraging note on their bag!
While students are at school for their exams we will have several stress management activities available during break and for students who are in a study hall period. In the library there will be popcorn and quiet study space. In the cafeteria, there is plenty of space to spread out and study but we will also have card games, coloring, playdough, word searches and snacks. In addition to the amazing Elmer, he is bringing a few friends from the Alliance of Therapy Dogs to meet students at the start of the school day and between exams!
In preparation for summer, I encourage you to have a conversation with your student about safety and expectations. Teens have a lot of freedom and free time over the summer. Starting the break out with an honest conversation about your expectations for safety is a great way to set the tone for summer! Here are a few helpful topics and tips to cover from Southern Midcoast Communities for Prevention:
Communication! Especially about plans–knowing where they will be, who they are with, when they will be home, and how to get in touch
Safe driving expectations–lots of teens have licenses but not all of them can have their peers in the car with the. This is also a great time to remind your teen to not get in the car with someone who has been drinking alcohol or using drugs.
Backup plans incase something goes wrong while they are with their friends. It can also be helpful to have a codeword to use if your student doesn’t feels safe and wants to be picked up immediately
Talking through expectations about a substance free summer
Check out Southern Midcoast Communities for Prevention’s instagram for more information and helpful tips!
A final reminder about the National Crisis Line and Maine Crisis Mobile… If you are concerned about your students' mental health and safety over the summer, please use one of these resources or go to the nearest emergency department! You can call or text them and receive support and guidance. Maine Crisis Mobile is also available to come directly to you!
National Crisis Line: 988
Maine Crisis Mobile: 1-888-568-1112
On the last day of school, we handed out orange bracelets with “988” on them as well as wallet cards with several local and national crisis and support lines. They are also available in the Front office, School Counseling Office, SROs office, Nurse’s office, and with each administrator and social worker! You are welcome to grab one for yourself during your next visit to BHS.
Have a safe and happy summer!! We look forward to seeing your student next year!

BHS SeaDragons Program
This year, the BHS Science department is excited to be continuing the SeaDragons program, a collaborative effort that brings 3rd graders from HBS up to the high school to work with BHS students and science teachers to learn about important marine ecology topics.
This project was originally funded by a BCEF grant and aims to make connections between students and teachers across the district. This year six 3rd grade classrooms are working with Sue Perkin's Zoology students and Andrew McCullough's Marine Science students to learn about snails, sharks, anadromous fish, and more.
3rd graders spend about two hours at the high school using the BHS science department's aquarium room and back fields as a classroom and getting the chance to learn from current BHS students.

Boys BHS Track and Field Team
The boys team also had a great day as they took the team title for the first time in over 20 years.
The boys team outscored the second place team by 31 points.
Boys Win Class A State Track Championship
On Saturday 6/3/23, the track team competed in heavy winds and rain at the Class A Track Championship at Mt. Ararat High School.
The boys' meet came down to the last event of the day, the 4x4 relay. The boys secured their place in history gaining 6 more points to out score Falmouth by 3 points and win the title.

Brunswick girls tennis defeated Falmouth in a 3-2 state championship!!
Brunswick Girls Tennis won the Class A State Championship 3-2 over the Falmouth Navigators Wednesday night. Both teams came into the contest undefeated on the year with perfect 12-0 records in the regular season. Including today’s action the Dragons end the season at 16-0, while Falmouth drops to 15-1.
Play, which had been scheduled for the Wallach Tennis Center at Bates College, was moved indoors to the Apex Tennis Center in Portland because of the weather forecast.
The teams split the doubles matches with Brunswick’s second doubles team of Izzy Leitzell and Molly Tefft getting the best of Falmouth’s Elise Gearan and Gwen Long 6-4, 6-2. First doubles went to Falmouth as Audrey Holland and Jenna Nunley topped Hazel Goodwin and Beatrice Elmore 6-1, 7-5.
Falmouth edged ahead 2-1 after first singles when Gracyn Mick defeated Sadie Levy of Brunswick 6-3, 6-2.
A long second singles match went to Ellie Meserve over Charlotte Williamson, 7-6, 7-6 with Ellie Meserve needing tiebreakers in both sets.
Fittingly Brunswick’s number one player, and the reigning state singles champion, Coco Meserve, had the opportunity to close things out for Brunswick and bring home the Dragons second state Championship in a week. Her opponent, Sofia Kirtchev had also had a great run at the MPA single championship ending as a semi-finalist, giving way, 6-3, 6-3, to eventual runner-up Mya Vincent of Edward Little.
With everything dependent on the final match of the day and the best player in the state wearing the Orange and Black of Brunswick, the first set went to Falmouth 2-6. Coco Meserve rallied to take the second set 6-2. In the third set Coco broke Kirtchev’s serve to go up 3-1, but Kirtchev broke right back. The long tension filled afternoon ended with a double fault by Kirtchev and third service break of the set for Meserve.
Brunswick has been to the title match three years running. In 2022 the Dragons succumbed to Kennebunk 5-0, in 2021 they won the Championship defeating Falmouth by the same 3-2 score.
