Kennedy Middle School Update
Monthly Parent Communication | October 2, 2023
Greetings, Crusader Families!
What an awesome first month of school. From classes to co-curriculars, there is so much to learn here at Kennedy. Get involved. Listen to announcements and check the KMS website for more information on sports and activities. Thank you to our students, staff, families and Germantown community for always supporting and cheering on our Kennedy Middle School students.
We have a new address. The new address for Kennedy Middle School is: N118 W15860 Williams Drive. This new address replaces the address off Crusader Court. The reasons for the change are to direct visitors to our Main Office entrance and decrease confusion for our first responders and first time visitors. Thank you to our Jeff Retzlaff (Director in our Village) for helping us with this change.
October is National Bullying Prevention Month. In addition to showing respect to all according to our KMS Way, we will be doing a daily Kindness Challenge each day. Some challenges are to write a letter of gratitude to a favorite teacher, hold the door open for someone or help them carry their supplies, compliment a person with whom you don’t normally interact, and hide a happy note for a friend to find. Check our Daily Announcements (posted on the website) for our daily Kindness Challenge!
Please reach out with any questions or concerns. We are here to help.
Enthusiastically,
Jessica Gieryn
KMS Principal

Got Sneakers?
We are having a fundraiser and are collecting used sneakers (athletic shoes), both youth and adult sizes, from great condition to not so good condition. We will put the pairs together and ship them to a company (Got Sneakers? at https://gotsneakers.com/). This money that we make through the fundraiser will be used to supplement the activities that we do in our class to build our life skills such as cooking, pre-vocational skills, gross and fine motor skills and miscellaneous supplies. Shoes can be dropped off in a box labeled "shoes" right outside the main office and our class will collect them. Our shoe drive will run throughout the month of October. We appreciate all of your support!

KMS After School Spectator Expectations
Students who are attending after school sporting events, without a parent, need to report to the designated location immediately after school. Students are encouraged to quietly work on homework or other academic tasks during this time. If students have completed all their school work they are allowed to quietly socialize with their peers. If students do not want to stay after school but would still like to attend the sporting event, they will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
During the sporting event, students are expected to sit in the student section which is supervised by KMS staff. Students will not be allowed to sit in other areas of the gym unless they are accompanied by an adult. Spectators are not allowed to sit on the players side of the gym. If a student is attending a sporting event with an adult that is not their guardian or parent, that individual is responsible for supervising that student during the event.
Cell Phone Use - We are aware that students will need access to their cell phones during these events for a variety of reasons including but not limited communication with parents when they are to be picked up, change in plans, and or for emergencies. Students' cell phones should be stored in their backpacks, which will be placed next to the bleachers, and if they need to use them they will be allowed to with the supervision of a KMS staff member. Students are allowed to come to the Gold Office throughout the day to contact parents so that plans can be made or clarified. If students are not following cell phone expectations or using their cell phones in inappropriate ways, KMS supervisors do have the right to confiscate the phones and give them to parents when the student is picked up. Students who are not following expectations for after school sporting events will meet with KMS administrators and their participation in future sporting events will be discussed.
Students who receive school-based consequences (such as an in-school suspension) during the day may not be allowed to attend after school events for that day.
