Student Spotlight
Bella Capra, now 13, fell in love with indoor skydiving at the age of nine. She then took up the sport competitively and has seen success, having competed at the national level three times now. But recently, the Ninety-One eighth-grader reached a new goal when she qualified for the Indoor Skydiving World Cup in Belgium as part of Team U.S.A.
“It was my dream to be able to go to worlds,” Bella said.
That dream will come true in April after a successful national competition, where Bella won 2nd place with her team of four called Volare, 3rd place in the 2-way competition with teammate Jill Knutson, and 2nd place as an individual. The wins earned Bella a spot at worlds in all three categories.
“I feel excited and astonished,” Bella said. “Like, wow, this is actually happening.”
Bella is a natural athlete, according to her mom, Christy Capra. When she’s not skydiving, Bella can be found playing soccer, climbing trees, or riding her dirt bike. Still, it’s taken a great deal of effort to get this far. Bella trains at the indoor skydiving facility in Tigard, practicing various moves for competition. She also travels around the U.S. to practice with her teammates, who hail from New York, Colorado, and Illinois.
Bella said she can’t wait for the competition to begin!
Winter Weather Prep
Please subscribe to Canby School District on FlashAlert.
As the temperatures continue getting colder, it’s time to start preparing for winter weather and the snow bus routes, school delays, or closures that can come along with it.
When inclement weather strikes, the district will make decisions about school as early as possible -- sometimes even the night before, but our goal is by no later than about 5:30 a.m. on the day of the weather event. The message will go out via FlashAlert and will then be reported on most news websites and TV stations.

HERO Award
All the kiddos from Eccles rural bus No. 1 joined the Canby Educational Foundation recently to surprise bus driver Marilyn BigJohn with the foundation’s annual HERO Award. Marilyn was also surrounded by her family, peers, district staff, and the mom who nominated her, Kristin Sare.
“We appreciate you more than you’ll ever realize,” Kristin said as she held Marilyn’s hand. “We are so thankful that you make riding the bus such a positive experience for our kids, all these students. … And we appreciate that you take the time to get to know us and our children.”
The HERO Award stands for Humble, Encouraging, Respectable, and Outstanding. It is presented to a community member with great passion, vision and generosity, and it is in honor of founding CEF board member Roger Reif. Marilyn meets all of those qualifications, and upon receiving the nomination, the CEF board voted unanimously to honor her for 2021. Marilyn received gifts, and her name will be engraved on a perpetual plaque that will be displayed at Eccles this year. CEF also donated $2,500 to Eccles in Marilyn’s name.
“It would be difficult to overstate the positive impact that Marilyn has on the students and families that she serves,” Mr. McKean said. “Day in and day out, Marilyn goes out of her way to connect with each and every individual as well as provide them with a positive and safe ride to and from school. She has remained positive and steadfast through these past couple of difficult years. Thank you, Marilyn, for being such a blessing to the ridership of bus 1.”
Nominations for the next HERO Award are now being accepted online at https://www.canbyedfoundation.org/.
As we head into the holiday season, there is much to look forward to. We hope you are able to enjoy this time with your family. We also want to send a reminder about interruptions in a child’s or adolescent’s everyday routine, which can create feelings of stress or chaos. One way to help create structure is to regularly hold space for simple conversations with your child.
Plan at least 15 minutes per day to chat with your child, asking questions about their experiences or interests and working to steer clear of questions that lead to one-word responses. For example, get a sense for how school is going for your child by asking a specific question like, “How was your math test?” Questions like this can jog your child’s memory about the rest of their day as well. You could also ask what their favorite thing is about their teacher or who they played with or hung out with at school. A simple conversation can give you a sense for your child’s wellbeing and help your child feel heard and connected at home.
Other question ideas:
What’s one thing you’re really looking forward to right now?
Which of your friends is easiest to talk to?
If you need help at school with a problem, who do you ask?
What's for Lunch?
All students. All abilities. All opportunities.
