Sioux Falls Thrive Kid Link
Are you ready for the first Kid Link Terry Redlin family night?
Kid Link is a neighborhood approach to re-aligning community resources to better serve children and their families. It’s been active in the Riverside area at Laura B. Anderson Elementary School since January 2020, and now Kid Link is coming to the Terry Redlin neighborhood.
Family nights are the most visible part of the Kid Link initiative. Open from 5 to 6 p.m. most Tuesdays, family nights provide opportunities for kids, families, neighbors, and friends to spend time learning and having fun together.
How does a family night happen?
At Terry Redlin Elementary School, staff from Kids Inc. and the Volunteers of America, Dakotas Afterschool Program are planning kids’ activities. Each week will feature several stations focusing on math, science, literacy and well-being. Most weeks will also include a parent engagement topic.
Oct. 4 is the first Kid Link family night at Terry Redlin.
Activities so far include:
• 3D Four Square with Augustana University SALT and Education Club members
• Washington Pavilion Afterschool Programming
• Think, Make, Create trailer
See you there!

Hello Terry Redlin families!
It is officially Fall as the leaves and temperatures change. We remind you to make sure your child is weather prepared each day. We will be outside for recess unless it is raining or storming. We will also be inside for recess if the temperature is below 0, or the wind chill is below 0.
The month of October will be busy as we will have our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences and Book Fair. There are also some no school days. No school on Monday, Oct. 10th due to Native American Day observance. No School on Tuesday, Oct. 11th due to teacher in-service and Parent-Teacher Conferences. Parent-Teachers conferences will take place on Tuesday, Oct 11th from 12 pm to 7 pm and Thursday, Oct. 13th from 3:30 – 7:00 pm. Your assigned times will be sent home on Thursday, Oct. 6th. The end of the first quarter is on October 27th.
Let’s have a SOARing October!

Get to know Brittney Ounnarath - Kindergarten Teacher
Hello! My name is Brittney Ounnarath (oo-nuh-rot), and I am the newest member of the wonderful kindergarten team at Terry Redlin. I am 23 years old, born in San Diego, CA, and I am Laotian (from Laos). I am the first generation in my family to graduate college, and the first to have a teaching degree! I moved to Sioux Falls, SD when I was 13 years old due to my father’s work. I went to Roosevelt HS and graduated at USD in 2021. Go Yotes!
Some of my hobbies that I love to do would be drawing, eating foods from different cultures, and traveling. This summer, I went to Hawaii for the first time, and I loved it! It was beautiful with luscious greenery, the smell of the ocean, and the cool breeze hitting my face. I would definitely go again! My next big trip that I am planning is Japan. I love the culture, food, architecture, and I am excited to see the Sakura Cherry Blossoms.
I think most people know how I popped up at Terry Redlin, but I would like to share my little story. A few days before the school year 2021-2022 would start, I saw on the subbing app that there was an opening for the first day of school for 2nd grade! I was surprised that there was an actual opening, but I wanted to get out of my comfort zone. I’ve never experienced teaching on the first day of school by myself, as I was fresh out of college, and I thought this could be a learning experience. (I also thought if I ever messed up, I could just ban myself from coming to Terry Redlin.) But boy was I wrong! I was overwhelmed by the support of staff helping me when I first walked into the building. They made me feel appreciated for coming to their building and ensuring that I had all the tools I needed to help the kids on their first day of school. Most importantly, I was grateful that they did not make me feel as if I was just a “substitute” standing in for someone temporarily. I felt important. I am forever grateful to all the staff members that I have met at Terry Redlin who have shown me what a building should look like, be like, and feel like. :)
