Hello Glenbard West Community -
Everyone here is very excited to be starting the second semester of the school year. When we examine the various metrics of student success, we are very pleased to report that students are achieving at a high level in the classroom and participating in strong numbers in sports and activities. Our teachers and support staff continue to work very hard so that our learning environment is inclusive, supportive, and safe.
This Newsletter is perhaps a bit long, however there is a good deal of important information included within. I am always proud of the way in which we recognize student achievement inside and outside of the classroom. For example, note that this year, Glenbard West will celebrate 110 Illinois State Scholars. For those of you who might not know, in order to be in this category, a senior must have a qualifying GPA and achieve at a high level on the SAT. Of course we are also very proud of the wide ranging recognition that we give based on character, hard work in the classroom, as well as leadership. Later in the year, many of these students will be recognized at our Underclassman and Senior Honors Convocations.
This is the time of year when students and families start to think about courses for NEXT YEAR. We are excited to be welcoming our incoming Hilltoppers tomorrow night at the 8th Grade Family Night. This is a great opportunity for families to meet teachers and connect with counselors and building leaders so that they have a solid understanding of the outstanding academic programming designed for their students. On Wednesday, February 15, we will also host an Athletic and Activity Night for our incoming freshman students.
As everyone knows, Glenbard West is celebrating its Centennial anniversary this year. We will always celebrate our past and our legacy, while continuing to inspire and empower our students for the future. Thanks for your ongoing support and as always, feel free to contact me or any administrator with any questions you may have.
Go West!

HISTORY OF GLENBARD WEST
Decade Fun Facts about Glenbard West
Hello Hilltoppers,
Glenbard High School became official on May 15, 1923. Not much is known about the high school in the 1930's because the Pinnacle yearbook wasn't published until the 1940's. World War II shaped the country and the school as resources were rationed and our young men and women joined the armed forces. The plaque by the Main Entrance bears the names of 71 Hilltoppers who perished in the war.
When peace was declared and the calendar turned over a new decade: the 1950's.
Diane “Dinie” Hobbet became the first female student council president. The 1955 Pinnacle yearbook reads, “For the first time in Glenbard’s history, a girl has been chosen by the student body to head Student Council. Diane, (“Dinie”) Hobbet, junior, was elected President Wednesday in the balloting for next year’s officers.”
At the start of the 1955-56 year the enrollment was 1,853. There were 67 faculty members and Driver Education was instituted as a regular course. In November 1955, a supporting shot was fired in the battle to relieve the very crowded conditions at Glenbard when a group of Lombard residents presented the Board of Education with a request for the establishment of a second high school to be located in Lombard. In March 1956, the state courts decided that the area of Bloomingdale which had petitioned to leave the Glenbard District would remain in District 87. On May 26, 1956, after many months of promotion by the school administration, the voters of the district approved a bond issue to build Glenbard East and a new gym at the Glen Ellyn campus.
Work on the Lombard school was underway and even with some serious construction delays plans were being made to open at least part of the building in the Fall of 1957. In July 1957, Mr. Fred L. Biester was formally appointed superintendent of District #87 and when school started in September, Glenbard Township High School became Glenbard West High School with Mr. David H. Miller as Principal.
Glenbard East High School opened with only Freshman and Sophomore students, and Mr. William E. Rider as Principal.
With the new gym and over 500 students at Glenbard East, crowding was eased for all aspects of the program. The athletic coaching staff looked forward to being able to build a stronger program that would allow more students to participate.
Glenbard’s very first Homecoming Pep Rally was held on Friday, October 6, 1950. According to the 1951 Pinnacle, “Student Council's most outstanding contribution was to work with the new Glenbard Boosters' Club this fall to sponsor the Hilltoppers' first Homecoming.”
According to The Glen Ellyn News, “approximately 1,500 people gathered for the pre-game pep rally which followed the torchlight parade Friday night.”
Jane Karr was crowned queen, making Jane Karr the very first Homecoming Queen in Glenbard’s history. Sadly, the next day, on Saturday, October 7, 1950, Glenbard lost to Lyons Township on a wet and dreary day. The final score was 26-6.
Currently, the bonfire is built by Seniors who volunteer, but in 1952 the student members of the Hi-Y club built the first bonfire. After the bonfire had been started, it blazed and crackled while the cheerleaders led a rousing pep session and began a big snake dance.
It is rumored that, one year, students from York High School lit the bonfire early as a prank on the eve of a game between the Dukes and Hitters.
Also, students had a torchlight parade. The torches were all homemade, built out of soup cans stuffed with balls of newspaper that had been soaked in kerosene nailed to a 3-foot stick. After the homecoming pep rally at Biester, students lit the torches, marched around the lake, encircled the wood pile, and threw the torches onto the pile starting the bonfire. Remarkably, this was all done without faculty or firemen supervision.
Due to the horrific 1958 fire at Our Lady of Angels--a Catholic elementary school on Chicago’s west side--Glenbard High School was required to remove all wooden floors.
Years later, according to several faculty members, during one of the summers when Dr. Elliott was principal, seniors who had been hired to remove the floors due to fire safety asked him where they should take the maple floor boards. “Oh, just chuck them over by the lake, for the bonfire” the principal said. In the fall, the homecoming pep rally burned the old floors in that year’s Homecoming Bonfire and the students who chucked the wood there were Glenbard West’s first Woodchucks. Seniors who build the fire are known as Woodchucks. To be a Woodchuck, students are required to apply for the honor and are excused from class as they stack the wood.

CONGRATULATIONS AP STUDIO ART STUDENTS
Every year, Oswego High School hosts an art competition for all high schools and middle schools in the Chicagoland area. It is entitled the "Chicagoland 4 x 5 Show" and has been in existence for 20 years. All art submitted MUST be 4" x 5"...no larger, no smaller. This is small work and is a challenge for students to work within those size requirements.
This year over 2,000 works of art were submitted to the competition (their largest amount of entries to date), and only 10% of students earn awards. Glenbard West had 3 winners!!!
Please congratulate:
• Shay McDonald: 3rd place, mixed media
• Grace Romano: Honorable Mention, painting
• Sophie Allaway: Honorable Mention, digital photography
Students received their awards at a reception on an evening in November that also included a Fine Arts College Portfolio Night where students had an opportunity to present their art portfolios for school admission and scholarships.
Pictured you will find each student's award winning work as well as a photo of Shay receiving her 3rd place award.

SUPERINTENDENT, DR. DAVID LARSON
Larson encourages students to explore dual credit course options
We have a long tradition of creating opportunity, access and a sense of belonging for students to experience early college coursework through Advanced Placement and dual credit classes.
Our strong partnership with the College of DuPage (C.O.D.) allows our students to take dual credit courses, taught by Glenbard teachers during the regular school day. These courses provide our students with the opportunity to earn three college credit hours per course at no cost to students or families.
Dual credit courses have many benefits for our students and families, including:
- Reduced college costs
- Expedited time to degree completion
- Easing the transition between high school and college
- Opportunities for improving degree attainment.
I encourage you and your student to contact your school counselor to explore opportunities to enroll in a dual credit class.
We envision our dual credit offerings in two important categories: college general education requirements and capstone experiences. The following courses would be considered great opportunities for students to get a head start on college general education requirements.
1. English 1101: English Composition 1 (IAI C1 900)
2. English 1102: English Composition 2 (IAI C1 901R)
3. Speech 1101: Fundamentals of Speech Communications (IAI C2 900)
4. Math 1218: General Education Math (IAI M1 904)
Each of these courses is part of the Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI), which means they are widely transferable for college credit among more than 100 participating colleges and universities in Illinois and beyond. I encourage students to talk with their counselor to see which dual credit options would be best for them.
In October, the Board of Education approved adding four capstone dual credit course experiences for our students. These courses allow students to dive deeply into a specific area that aligns with their postsecondary interests and earn college credit at the same time. These capstone courses will allow students to explore the fields of education and horticulture:
1. Intro to Education: Dual Credit 1100
2. School Procedures: Dual Credit 1101
3. Intro to Horticulture: Dual Credit 1100
4. Intro to Sustainable Urban Agriculture: Dual Credit 2300
I continue to be impressed with the students who have enrolled in dual credit classes, and I look forward to more students taking this opportunity to earn early college credit. We are committed to preparing students for success by exposing them to college-level coursework. I encourage you and your student to connect with your school counselor to discuss opportunities to enroll in a dual credit class.
