Students on the third six weeks honor roll and principal's list received a certificate, pencil pouch with supplies, bookmark, and balloon as a recognition for a job well done. The students in Mrs. Ramey's Kindergarten class celebrated Black History Month by creating projects about famous African Americans.

Mrs. Ramey's class has been studying the letter W. Students were to bring an item to class that begins with the letter W. Harley Moore wore a Wig to class. Your wonderful wig is wildly colorful Harley! Keep up the good work Kindergartners.

Mrs. Wharton's Kindergarten class studied arctic animals during the month of January. After finishing their study, the students made a polar bear craft.

In Music this month, each grade level has worked on a different Children's Classic: Second Grade and EC listened to parts of "The Carnival of the Animals"; Third Grade listened to parts of Mozart's "Magic Flute Opera", learning about a story that is sung with characters, usually on stage. Kindergarten worked on rhythm and keeping a beat during a story "Possum Come a-Knockin'" while First Grade did the story of "Berlioz the Bear" with "The Flight of the Bumblebee." Fourth and Fifth graders continued with recorder lessons, adding more notes and songs to play.

We switched to Black History Month focusing on famous Black Musicians. This project is in collaboration with Mrs. Paynter's media lesson. Students in the upper grades chose a Black Musician to report on. In music, we learned about these select genres of music: Jazz, Pop, Children's Folk, Spirituals and Gospel, Opera and Blues with K-1st concentrating on Jazz and Children's Folk Music. Thank you for helping your student(s) stay involved with weekly music class attendance. It truly makes a difference.

Mrs. Callahan's guidance classes focused on compassion and love during the month of February. Students in 2nd through 5th grades read the book I Am Love by Susan Verde which explains the many different ways humans can show compassion and love to others. Students participated in a compassion project by making a virtual Valentine's Day card for patients and their families at St. Jude's Hospital. Students in Kindergarten and 1st grade read the book Roses Are Pink Your Feet Really Stink by Diane DeGroat. Students learned that we can show compassion to others by being careful with our words. They learned to be sure to never break someone's heart by saying unkind things to another person. They were then given the opportunity to practice using kind compassionate words with their classmates.

Pre-K Registration for the 2021-2022 school year will take place at Hawkins Educational Center on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 from 9:00 am-6:00 pm. Your child must be 4 years old by August 31, 2021 to register for Pre-K.

To complete the Pre-K application, you must have the following documents:

1. Your child's official birth certificate

2. Your child's social security card

3. Proof of Residency (a current electric/cable bill or lease agreement with parent's name on it)

4. One full month proof of income

5. Parent’s Photo ID

6. Your child's immunization records and Health Assessment

Kindergarten registration for the 2021-2022 school year will take place at Hawkins Educational Center on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 from 9:00 am-6:00 pm. Your child must be 5 years old by August 31, 2021 to register for Kindergarten.

To complete your application, you must have the following documents:

1. Your child's official birth certificate

2. Your child's social security card

3. Proof of Residency (a current electric/cable bill or lease agreement with parent's name on it)

4. Parent’s Photo ID

5. Please bring your child's immunization records and Health Assessment if available

Students in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade will be taking online Benchmarks February 23-March 1. Please be sure your students are prepared to do their best on their Benchmark tests. A few Benchmark readiness tips include:

1. Get a Good Night's Sleep. Being well rested is important!

2. Eat a Healthy Breakfast. Food is your bodies fuel.

3. Find a quiet distraction free space to test.

4. Allow your child to complete their Benchmarks on their own. It is imperative that students do not receive help on their tests. Teachers will use Benchmark scores to determine what skills students still need to be taught.

The Benchmark schedule for February 23 through March 1 will be as follows:

February 23rd: 4th and 5th grade reading

February 24th: 4th and 5th grade math

February 25th: 5th grade science

February 26th: 3rd grade reading

March 1st: 3rd grade Math
