RSU 57 Community Newsletter
April 3, 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear RSU 57 Community.
The month of April has arrived and with it the hope of warming weather and realization that we are entering the final quarter of the 2022-23 school year. This year has certainly flown by, however, there are still a great many exciting things still yet to take place across RSU 57 between now and the final day of school. Our high school and middle school Spring sports teams have begun their seasons and our participation numbers at both schools are strong. I’m looking forward to catching our student-athletes in action this Spring on the turf, the diamond and the track.
There are a number of accomplishments across the district that I want to share with our full RSU 57 community. First, Grade 8 students at Massabesic Middle School participated in the national KidWind turbine engineering competition. The top six teams were then entered into the regional competition held at Ocean’s Gateway in Portland. Of the six MMS teams competing we had 3 teams finish in the top 10, including teams that earned 2nd and 3rd place respectively! The 2nd place team of Noah Crosby, Landon Lawrence and Chase Morin have been invited to compete in the 2023 National KidWind Challenge being held this May in Boulder, CO! Way to go Noah, Landon and Chase and congratulations to all our teams who competed in this challenging competition! (Additional photos & information below.)
Next, I’d like to recognize the recent performances put on by our talented band and chorus students over the past two weeks. First, I would like to recognize all of our amazing musicians who performed at our District Music Concert held at Massabesic Middle School. Students in grades 5 through 12 shared fantastic performances showcasing all of their hard work and preparation in what proved to be a great night of community with well over 1,000 people in attendance at the event! Next, I want to recognize our Middle School chorus members for their tremendous performance last week. It was clear that they have worked extremely hard in preparation for the concert! Way to go!
Lastly, I would like to close with an update on the RSU 57 budget process. The RSU 57 administration and the School Board Finance Committee have worked extremely hard to craft a budget that both ensures the continuation of a strong academic program PreK through grade 12 for RSU 57 students, while being financially responsible to our RSU 57 taxpayers. We are confident that the recently School Board approved budget for the 2024 fiscal year is one that does just that. We are hopeful that our RSU 57 community will demonstrate a support of this budget at both our RSU 57 District Budget Meeting held at 7pm on May 15 at Massabesic Middle School and again at the voting booth on June Tuesday June 13. I want to thank the Finance Committee, under the leadership of Chair Dominic Vermette and our Finance Director Colin Walsh for their time and concerted effort to craft a budget that supports the students of RSU 57 while still respecting the challenging financial realities that many of our RSU 57 citizens face.
I wish you all a healthy and happy week ahead.
Dr. Stephen D. Marquis
KindWind Challenge
On March 23, Massabesic Middle School sent their top 6 KidWind Challenge teams to the State competition held at Ocean's Gateway in Portland. MMS took home two of the top three spots and one of the teams had the highest output of all the wind turbines at the competition! Well done to our eighth grade students and science teachers! They represented RSU #57 well and we are so proud of all who participated! (pictured below)
MHS Chess Club
On Saturday, April 1, the Massabesic High School Chess Club traveled to Bonny Eagle to compete for the Claude E. Webber Cup. Walker Vivian and Morgan Valverde went 5-3 in their games, with Walker finishing in the 10 for the tournament. The Chess Club is 11-5 this year in tournament play. Congratulations, Mustangs!
Weather At Your School
Ted McInerney from WMTW Channel 8 visited Alfred Elementary School on March 22. Students assisted with the broadcasting in the early morning hours. AES then hosted a whole school assembly with the news crew to learn about everything weather-related. Click HERE to watch a snippet of the assembly! (pictured below)
March Model Mustang Staff
The Board of Directors Public Relations and Technology Committee has created the "Model Mustang Staff Award", which recognizes staff members who exemplify at least one of the following qualities: inspirational, is a leader, creates a positive culture, perseveres, and is excellent at what they do. RSU #57 Staff Members can nominate their peers, and each month, one person is randomly selected to win a gift certificate to a local business. This month, operations team member Mike DiBurro was the winner! Congratulations to all of our wonderful staff nominees for making a difference in the lives of students and their families.
