Eighth-Grade Adventure
GWA eighth graders left the classroom on a three-day, two-night trip to Dahlonega, Georgia and Chattanooga, Tennessee. Students visited a gold mine that was responsible for bringing jobs to Georgia and they learned about the miners' dangerous jobs and minting. In Chattanooga, students visited Ruby Falls as well as Lookout Mountain, where you can see seven states on sunny days! They also visited some Native American sites like New Echota and the Etowah Indian Mounds, tying back to an earlier unit on Georgia History. Students experienced a taste of life in the late 19th century as they enjoyed dinner in a dining car – the height of travel for that period.
Eighth graders and their teachers bowled and battled it out in an arcade, checked out the Tennessee Aquarium and the Tellus Museum and looked at scientific inventions like cars, planes, and space travel. The group visited a lot of interesting sites, but the opportunity to spend time with one another was the best part of the trip. Eighth grade soaked up every bit of knowledge and fun possible!
Space Travelers
GWA sixth graders traveled to the U.S. Space and Rocket Center to participate in the Pathfinder Program. Students took part in a mission simulation where they were assigned to Mission Control, the space shuttle crew, or the crew of the International Space Station. Each of the four groups built and launched model rockets to demonstrate how we launch supplies into space. The most exciting part of the trip was having the opportunity to experience the Multi-Axis Trainer and the Five Degrees of Freedom Simulator.
Learning About Landforms
First graders have been learning about landforms as part of their geography unit. Up to this point, they have worked hard to identify landforms, create landforms with Play-Doh, and even looked at various landforms on Google Earth. To show off what they have learned, first graders created 3D models of various landforms using yummy treats! Once complete, they uploaded a picture of their creations to SeeSaw and added labels to each component.
Celebrating Young Artists
Each year, the Monroe-Walton Center for the Arts celebrates the budding artists in the community by hosting an Elementary Art Show. Each elementary school in the area is encouraged to display the art students have been working on throughout the current school year. The works from many of our lower school art students were showcased at this event. Their drawings, paintings, sculpture, and digital art shined brightly at the exhibition. Way to go, students!
State Champs Honored
The Lady Dawgs and their coaches, Lori Hines and Grace Martin, received recognition for their State Basketball Championship title with a House resolution in their honor at the Georgia State Capitol. They were greeted by Georgia Representatives Tim Fleming, Rey Martinez, and Bruce Williamson.
LAX Update
Our boys varsity lacrosse team defeated Strong Rock 10-8 on the road this week for a big Region win. Their overall record stands at 6-3. Come out to Don Williams stadium on Monday, March 27 at 6 p.m. to cheer on the Bulldogs as they face Riverside Prep in a region match up.
Winning Streak
Our GWA varsity tennis teams continue their winning streak this week with victories over Grayson High School and Lake Oconee Academy. Girls finished 4-1 and boys at 3-2 for both match ups. At LOA, Phillip Akin, Evan Phillips and Logan Thornton gave GWA the win at the singles positions. The boys move to 9-2 on their season while the girls have an 8-1 record.
Making Strides
The middle school tennis team faced Bethlehem Christian yesterday on the home courts. The girls won 3-2, the boys fell short at 2-3 and the team won both exhibition matches. They head to St. Joseph's this afternoon. Good luck, Bulldogs!
Page For a Day
GWA seventh-grade student Jax Fleming participated in the Senate Page Program at the Georgia Capitol. Jax said, “As a page I delivered messages to representatives. I was able to meet Lieutenant Governor Burt Jones and the Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger. I also got to hit the gavel in the chamber!”
