Updates from Mr. Dettwiller
8-17-22
It is almost here and our staff is extremely excited to get our students back in the building. Some of the information at the beginning of the newsletter is the same as the last, just in case anyone has questions about the start of the year. I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy the fair this week and we will see you next week. As always if you ever have any questions or just want to talk about something please, reach out to me. We appreciate your feedback.

Some Changes to Watch for in the 22-23 School Year
School Lunch Changes
Breakfast will still be free though for all students.
One big key for us as a district is everyone filling out the free and reduced lunch forms. These are critical for our funding mechanisms through the state. Even if you don't think you will qualify it is critical we get one these filled out for every student. Having these forms can have a huge impact on our State funding, and making sure every student who qualifies will receive a free or reduced cost lunch.

Updated Coronavirus guidelines for this school year
The Meigs County Health Department recently met with the school leadership and issued the guidance below. We can't thank these individuals enough for their help the last few years. There are some pretty major changes for this school year compared to last. You can read the recommendations in their entirety in the link below, but the main highlights are bulleted here.
• First, because contact tracing and case investigation has shifted to focus on high-risk
environments, such as long-term care facilities and healthcare settings, ODH is no longer
recommending the Mask to Stay, Test to Play quarantine alternative for schools.
• Instead, ODH recommends schools follow general isolation procedures from the CDC for
confirmed cases. If students or staff feel sick or suspect they might have COVID-19, they should stay home and take a rapid test. If positive, students and staff should stay home from school for at least 5 days and longer if necessary until fever-free for 24 hours (without the use of fever-reducing medication) and symptoms are improving. Additionally, after isolation ends, students and staff should continue to take precautions as they resume normal activities by wearing a mask for 5 days (or after two negative tests 48 hours apart).

EASTERN BAND CAMP A HUGE SUCCESS
An update from our new music director Mr. Hayden Frey on band camp the last couple of weeks. The camp went very well! I think the kids had a lot of fun and are excited about the band. They worked hard this week!
The kids were provided lunch, courtesy of the boosters, on the 8-3 days. We focused heavily on team building activities like skit writing, pictionary, and other activities. The music we worked on primarily focused on the Fight Song, Hey Song, Break My Heart (Dua Lipa), and various crowd teasers. Instrument fundamentals also took up a large chunk of our music time.
Pictures below: Decade Day (one of the kids thought it was costume day - hence the bush in the bottom left), White Lie Day (write an obvious lie on a white shirt), movie/singer day, and taco Tuesday.
If anyone one is interested in helping with Music Boosters or being a part of the music program in some way, please reach out to Mr. Frey.

Eastern Special Education Team Wins Franklin B Walter Outstanding Educator Award
The ELSD Special Education Team is made up of Intervention Specialists and related service personnel.
Some of the noticeable traits mentioned of the Intervention Specials is that they are passionate about Orton Gillingham and Wilson Reading Systems to help early readers. They are patient, hardworking, and gracious, going above and beyond to help meet students’ needs. They meticulously plan lessons for small group instruction seeing reading levels jump as much as 1.5 grade levels since the beginning of the year. They communicate with families and bring a degree of calm to the classroom and IEP meetings. They bring grace and humility to the team, are understanding, empathetic, and eternally supportive of students and try to reach the unreachable with warmth and compassion.
The CC Teachers round out the traditional special educators and embrace change and opportunities for growth every single day. They fill their classrooms with joy and understanding, creating lasting bonds with students and encouraging them to be independent learners and contributing community members.
The Related Service and Speech Therapist highlight student needs and keep everyone on track in providing appropriate classroom support. They help with strategy brainstorming, implementation, and training, provide direct services and thoughtful feedback. They have all built positive relationships with the classroom teachers and support staff. They work tirelessly to make sure all Eastern Local students have true access to their space and curriculum.
Your Franklin B Walter Outstanding Educator Award goes to the ELSD Special Education Team.

EASTERN REPRESENTED AT THE GOVERNOR’S RESIDENCE
I was lucky enough to visit the governor’s residence and hear he and his cabinet speak about Appalachian development. I had the opportunity to speak with he, and Director John Carey about some goals we have for our district and some of the challenges we face with our infrastructure.
I also talked to Mrs. DeWine about early literacy and how important I thought it was to increase spending on preschool for all students in Ohio to help get them the start they need to be successful.
Finally I had a chance to discuss some ideas with Director Lydia Mihalik, and Lt. Governor Husted about ways to expand career tech options for our students.
There were several superintendents from the area in attendance as well as Meigs County Economic Development Director Perry Varnadoe, and a recent Eastern Grad there working, in Jett Facemyer. It was exciting to see Meigs County and Eastern Schools represented at this event and working to help the community.
