Principal's Corner

March is an exciting and busy month! We begin the month with Mid-Winter Break (March 4-7), move our clocks forward one hour March 13th, welcome the spring season on March 20th, and end the month with OLSAT testing (2nd grade) and IAR testing (3rd grade) the week of March 21st. We will also soon be announcing an engaging reading incentive that we encourage all students and families to participate in!

We invite you, one final time, to complete the 5Essentials Parent Survey here: http://survey.5-essentials.org/illinois/survey/parent/ (see more information in the newsletter below). The survey closes on March 11th. Please consider completing the survey before March 11th; your opinion matters to us!

You are invited to the virtual Primary Family Math Night on March 17th from 6:30-7:30 PM. Students and families will have opportunities to engage in fun math activities and be entered into a raffle to win prizes! Please be on the lookout for the flyer and additional information.

Families: The staff at Mohawk go above and beyond each and every day to serve the students and families. Is there a particular staff member who has gone above and beyond for your family? 3rd Grade: Ciro, Paris, Isaac, Jamilah, and Nahla

Daily attendance and punctuality contribute to improving success in school. These are habits that are learned and will be needed throughout life. Parent/Guardians must require students to attend school daily and to be on time, expect when illness or family emergencies interfere.

In the event of illness, parents are expected to call the school before the start of the school day to report the absence: 708-668-9350. To ensure accuracy, parents are requested to provide the following information: student's name, parent's/guardian's name, grade level, date or dates of absence and reason for absence(s). (2021-2022 Parent/Student Handbook, page 3)

Our doors open to all students at 7:50 AM and breakfast is served between 7:50-8:15 AM. If you are dropping your child off at Mohawk each morning, please have him/her at school before 8:15 AM. Our teachers begin teaching promptly at 8:20 AM each morning. For dismissal, all students are dismissed promptly at 3:00 PM.

At Mohawk, our students practice their math facts daily through the Rocket Math program. We encourage all students to practice at home as well. For more information on Rocket Math and to access resources, please click here. Below are the math operation expectations for each grade level at Mohawk:

• Kindergarten: Beginning Numerals & Rocket Writing for Numerals
• 1st Grade: Basic Addition & Add to 20
• 2nd Grade: Basic Subtraction & Subtract to 20
• 3rd Grade: Basic Multiplication & Multiplication by 10, 11, 12
