This Week in Religious Education
What is happening for children, youth, and families at OUUC
Service Sunday!
This Sunday is the culmination of our September theme of Covenant in our religious education classes. We have asked "how will we be together?" and explored Covenant as promises that families could make to each other and that classes, groups, and communities make to each other. We've talked a bit about the difference between rules and promises, and practiced listening to each other.
Now we will put our learning into Action. This Sunday we will have opportunities for keeping our promises and caring for our OUUC community, with a variety of options for different ages, abilities, and weather conditions available. Parents are invited to attend with their children and help out too, if they wish, or children can attend without their parents.
At 9:15 there will be one Spirit Play class for preschool-5th grade children. They will have a lesson about our 7 Promises (the 7 Principles), and some optional service projects for their work time.
At 11:00 there will be a Spirit Play class for PreK, with the same lesson as the 9:15 class, and the Labyrinth Learning class (1st-5th grade) will explore what service means and connect the story of John Murray and Thomas Potter to the idea of service and how we build community and faithfully keep our promises. Both classes will have service project options following their stories.
There will be no youth groups meeting this week. Middle School youth are away at the Puget Sound UU Conference.
It's time to register for 2018-2019 programs
If you have not already done so, please take some time this week to complete the registration form for the new program year.
Cottage Meeting for the Ministerial Search! (With Childcare!)
The Ministerial Search Committee wants families and youth to know how they can connect with the search process. Right now the committee is gathering input from the congregation - and that includes everyone, of all ages!
- Cottage meeting, childcare provided, September 30 12:30pm. Register for this meeting here.
Soul Work Available Every Sunday
Have you noticed the cart outside the sanctuary before you go into worship each Sunday? It is holding "Soul Work", or mindful things you can do with your hands while you experience worship. All ages are welcome to make use of these materials!
So far we have coloring pages, embroidery, clay, and some other fine-motor crafts. What other Soul Work would your hands love to do while you worship?
If you have any ideas for other Soul Work or could donate some items to the cart, please let me know.
Owning Your Religious Past for Parents Class in Danger of Cancelation
Last Chance to register! If we don't get enough participants, this class will be canceled
Sundays 9:30-10:30am, October 7, 14, 21
As parents, you are a huge influence on the faith development and religious education of your children. Many Unitarian Universalist parents approach this role and the task of crafting their family's faith practices at home with mixed feelings, however.
Did you grow up in a different faith? Have you processed your experiences and feelings from your own religious childhood and set intentions of what you want to carry forward into your family life now?
Are you co-parenting with others who grew up in a different faith or who have very different feelings about faith now? How can you bring these faith histories together for an intentional family practice now?
Or perhaps you grew up unchurched, and now want to craft something different for your family.
This class will help parents reflect back on their own religious past in order to better move forward into a new faith future for their families.
Sunday and Every Day: Taking It Home
Classes on September 23rd focused on the idea of Covenant, or of the promises that we make to each other as part of building our community. Children made covenants in class, and explored the difference between Rules and Promises.
Discuss at home:
- What rules do we have? Why do we have those rules?
- What promises do we make to each other? Why have we made those promises?
- What is the difference between a rule and a promise? What happens when each is broken? How do we make amends when one is broken?
Looking Ahead, Sunday October 7th
On Sunday October 7th we will introduce a new theme of the month, Prophetic People, in our second Family Chapel.

Help Out!
Everyone is needed to make our beloved community work! Here are some ways you can help our children and youth programs now:
1) Donate Snacks. Healthy and yummy snacks build community and keep our kiddos happy! You can bring non-perishable snacks to stash in the RE cupboard in the kitchen, or sign up to bring a healthy fresh snack on a given Sunday.
2) Come as a family on September 30th to volunteer together for the Labyrinth Learning class's "Service Sunday". We will be cleaning and weeding in the play yard and sorting and tidying the craft supplies, among other possible tasks.
