Oakland Schools Presents...

We are excited to offer two opportunities that can be taken in conjunction or independently for your school or district to engage with the newly released Secondary Disciplinary Essentials documents.

• Two-Day Institute
• Disciplinary Literacy Network

• 6th through 12th grade teachers in any discipline who are interested in improving literacy and engagement in secondary classrooms

• Teacher leaders, coaches, special education teachers, teachers of English Language Learners, and interventionists

• Building principals

• Curriculum directors and other administrative leaders

Note: It is highly recommended that schools send a team consisting of interested teachers, building principals and teacher leaders/coaches to the sessions.

1. Identify the ways of knowing, thinking, and communicating in each discipline.

2. Increase knowledge around the role of problem-based instruction in each discipline.

3. Connect in-school and out-of-school literacies.

4. Identify areas of readiness and use systems thinking to implement changes in instruction.
   

5. Network with other professionals.

What?

During the two-day Institute, participants will explore big ideas around improving literacy for adolescents and deepen understanding of disciplinary literacy.

The Oakland Schools Disciplinary Literacy Team is putting together plans to re-run the two-day institute in June! Mark your calendars for June 16 and 17 from 8:30am to 3:00pm each day. Once we have a location identified, we will update this flyer and add a registration link.

Disciplinary Literacy Network dates are opportunities for educators to continue the conversation about disciplinary literacy, engage in "just in time" learning, and network with colleagues and Oakland Schools consultants to support continued growth around this work.

All meetings will be held from 12:00 pm to 3:30 pm at the Main Campus of Oakland Schools.

Lunch will be provided from 12:00 to 12:30 pm.
