Why, When, and How
Reaching out to Professionals
By Lisa Tessier, Assistant Director | Career Planning & Development
When meeting with professionals, whether virtually or in person, it is important to remember the why, when and how to get the most out of your conversation. Don’t be afraid to reach to a professional when the situation calls for it.
Why?
Researching career fields online is a good first step. But once you have the background information, speaking with professionals can give you a personal perspective, insider insight, and customized advice that you cannot get from reading websites, blogs, or watching videos. The back and forth of a conversation is where your career path will really begin to take shape and allow you to move forward toward your goals.
When?
- When researching different career paths within your academic field, speak with experts, alumni and company employees working in those areas. Be sure to use our Virtual Etiquette advice.
- Reaching out to professionals during the hiring process is a must. Whether you are connecting with a company recruiter through LinkedIn for advice on navigating the hiring process, or connecting with a Drury alum for information about a particular company’s culture, or contacting the HR department for details about your interview, these communications require a less casual and more professional approach.
- Expanding your network by developing relationships with people is a lifelong pursuit. Mentors can fill a number of roles besides directly connecting you to jobs. The deeper the relationship you create with these people, the more customized their career and life advice will be.
